'The King's Speech': Oscars 2011 Best Picture Winner

The Kings Speech

King George VI triumphed and made his speech, and now, the film made the biggest speech of the night: "The King's Speech" was crowned Best Picture at the 2011 Oscars.

The World War II-set drama about friendship, trust and overcoming the odds beat out nine other films, including Golden Globe winner "The Social Network". It's the first time the Academy has awarded a film about British Royalty the top slot.

Colin Firth, who won for Best Actor, starred as King George VI, a stuttering King of England who must overcome his speech impediment to deliver a speech and inspire a downtrodden country as Nazi bombs rain down. Geoffrey Rush played his quirky speech therapist, Lionel Logue, while Helena Bonham Carter plays a young Queen Mum.

People who say that TKS is about royalty are missing the point. That's the backdrop, but the story is about overcoming adversity and taking responsibility, and in that regard it struck all the right chords. It was both emotional and intelligent -- a rare combination these days.

TSN was directed well but it seemed to be a primer for a generation that is already over privileged and over praised to be even more arrogant. Besides 90% of Zuckerberg's success is right place/right time/luck. I can't cheer for that.

The Kings Speech is one film that I would pay to see again in the theatre. I enjoyed it immensely. I would love to see a remake of the Edward & Mrs. Simpson story.

Social Network was brilliant. King's Speech was boring and was pro royalty who are nothing more than descendants of medieval gang leaders. People who live for free at the cost of the peasants. When are we going to reach the enlightment period?

When? Not so soon I feel. Social Network was a con in the end. That's not what FB is about.

I didn't see the King Speech as being about anyone living at the cost of peasants either. I watched a movie about being human.

The reason there are different movies about different things is because out of 7 billion people most are different as this disagreement points out.

I couldn't disagree more. I rarely blow $30 for a flick after food - I usually wait for the DVD and my own amazing popcorn. But the Kings Speech is one rare film for me that I would go to see again in the theaters.

I guess it's a matter of personal taste.

The social network...way overrated. Kings Speech brilliant. Oscar Ceremony....real bad. Kirk Douglas...Brave.

I saw and enjoyed "The King's Speech," but thought "True Grit" was a much better film. "The King's Speech" was historically inaccurate, among other things. A good movie, to be sure, but not quite Oscar worthy.

Those inaccuracies were?

For one, Churchill didn't really support King George, he was a supporter of his brother, King Edward. It is also my understanding HRH was getting speech therapy much longer than it was inferred in the movie.

I saw the film a few days ago and was surprised to see the number of people who were also catching the show given how long it's been in theaters. I was even more pleasantly surprised when the majority of us started clapping at the end of the film. It was wonderful.

I like it better than Social Network, but Social Network is more important.

Probably a lot of voters found Zuckerberg and the Facebook story too creepy.

WHY IS SOCIAL NETWORK IMPORTANT, BECAUSE A PERSON BECAME RICH WITH AN IDEA, AND IT REALLY IRKS PEOPLE THAT A PERSON REALLY CAN MAKE ALOT OF MONEY WITH AN IDEA. AND ZUCKERBERG DIDNT EVEN LIKE THE MOVIE. PROBABLY A LIBERAL WROTE AND DIRECTED THIS MOVIE. I KNOW ZUCKERBERG IS A LIBERAL BUT NOBODY SHOULD WRTE A MOVIE ABOUT LIES ABOUT HIM AND THATS WHAT THIS MOVIE IS ALL ABOUT ITS ABOUT LIES. AND THE KING SPEECH DESERVED TO WIN

This film was great & my favorite from the beginning. It won class and respect, especially from a SAG member who was given the actual screener rather than a digital code to watch the other nominated films for a limited time. What a joke. Please don't pull, piracy/green issues. Every other union were given screeners, as is the tradition on oscar season. SAG is useless.
Back to the subject. Cheers for "The Kings Speech"!!!

Don't get me wrong, I understand why it wasn't even nominated, but the picture I ENJOYED the most this year was "Let me in."

So happy that The King's Speech won; it was well deserved. I mean, it gave stutters a voice and hope. I highly doubt any other movie did that.
