CHICAGO (Reuters) - Half of men in the general population may be infected with human papillomavirus or HPV, the human wart virus that causes cervical and other cancers, strengthening the case for vaccinating boys against HPV, U.S. researchers said Monday.

U.S. vaccine advisers have been weighing whether boys and young men should be vaccinated against the human papillomavirus, as they already recommend for girls and young women, but some worry the vaccine is too costly to justify its use.

HPV infection is best known as the primary cause of cervical cancer, the second most common cancer in women worldwide. But various strains of HPV also cause anal, penile, head and neck cancers. Vaccinating men and boys would prevent some of these cancers.

Anna Giuliano of the H Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute in Tampa, Florida, and colleagues studied infection rates among more than 1,100 men aged 18 to 70 in the United States, Brazil and Mexico to get a snapshot of the natural progression of HPV infection in men.

``We found that there is a high proportion of men who have genital HPV infections. At enrollment, it was 50 percent,'' said Giuliano, whose study appears online in the journal Lancet.

The team also found that the rate at which men acquire new HPV infections is very similar to women.

And they found that about 6 percent of men per year will get a new HPV 16 infection, the strain that is known for causing cervical cancer in women and other cancers in men.

Vaccines made by Merck & Co and GlaxoSmithKline both offer protection against this strain of HPV.

``The biology seems to be very similar (to women),'' Giuliano said in a telephone interview.

``What is different is men seem to have high prevalence of genital HPV infections throughout their lifespans.''

She said it appears that women are better able to clear an HPV infection, especially as they age, but men do not appear to have this same ability.

Vaccine experts said the study builds momentum for widespread HPV vaccination among boys.

Currently, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends Gardasil vaccinations for girls and women between the ages of 11 and 26. Gardasil had sales of more than $1 billion last year.

And while doctors are free to use the vaccine in boys and men ages 9 through 26, U.S. health officials so far have declined to recommend routine vaccination for males.

``This study highlights the high incidence of HPV infection in men, which emphasizes their role in transmission of HPV to women,'' Dr. Anne Szarewski of the Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine in London said in a statement.

``It must surely strengthen the argument for vaccination of men, both for their own protection, and that of their partners.''

In December, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Merck's Gardasil HPV vaccine for prevention of anal cancers in both men and women, based on studies showing Gardasil was effective in men who have sex with men, a group that has a higher incidence of anal cancer.

Anal cancer is one of the less common types of cancer, with an estimated 5,300 new U.S. cases diagnosed each year, but the incidence is increasing.

Someone who is killed or permanently injured by a vaccine cannot sue the manufacturer in civil court, even if it is proven that the vaccine was defective per SCOTUS. Does that make everyone feel better?

I wonder why the vaccination periods apparently ends at 26 years of age for men. It would be great to know. I'm pretty sure I've never been infected, so I wouldn't mind getting the vaccination, but I'm over 26....

It has to do with the observation that the best chance for the vaccine to be effective is in a relatively unexposed population. 26 is something of an arbitrary cutoff, but it is probably based on the rates of infection in the population. You could certainly get it if you're older, but they might not make a big public push for it.

At a party last week, I overheard a thirty-something hetero guy give a gay teenager a stern lecture on safer sex. The 19-year-old rolled his eyes and said "Like I don't know all this." The thirty-something frowned and asked, rather aggressively,"Well are you HIV positive? Have you even been tested?"

I had started sharpening my teeth with a file, but before I could butt in the 19-year-old replied, "Yeah, I have, not that the result is your business. Have you been tested for HPV?" The response was... "What's that?"

I know some self-aware, responsible heterosexual men who take this seriously. But I also know a whole lot of cretins who don't know and don't care.

I assume there are tens of thousands of straight community activists holding fundraisers to raise awareness across America, and that I haven't noticed a single one because I live under a rock. I've probably been too busy corresponding with an old friend who's fighting cervical cancer.

This article conveniently forgets to list any data (or even mention) negative side effects of these proposed vaccines (like Guardasil).

Does anyone have any information or links regarding side effects (short and long term) of Guardasil?

There have been 32 deaths linked to the Gardasil vaccine. If you Google the drug, and do NOT go to the manufs. site, you will find the serious and not so serious side effects listed. I do not have a young daughter, but if I did, I would be concerned about the unknown long term side effects. It reminds me of when all menopausal women were highly encourage by their doctors to have hormone replacement therapy to protect them from heart disease. Millions of women complied until, about 10 years later, they discovered that HRT provided NO protection against heart disease, and in fact, caused increased rates of breast and cervical cancer.

by a "high-risk" HPV is the pivotal tumor promoter in cancer induction ."

Just another study paid for by big pharma to scare people into buying their products... Not to worry though, if people don't go buy the vaccines, many governments and the U.N. will buy them with people's tax dollars.

"I love capitalism, but I hate corporatism"

How do you separate those exactly? By making everything small business? So, one small business will make one phase of the vaccine, the other will make another and then we'll have 50 companies making a single vaccine? If you like capitalism, you have to accept corporations, especially in a country as large as the US. My argument is more sound than yours; because I just don't like capitalism.

It made sense from a 'marketing' standpoint--women are affected, so them getting the vaccine would be worth their while. Guys, on the other hand, don't get as much direct benefit. It's hard to get someone to agree to do something that will protect other people but not themselves.

But you're right, from an epidemiology perspective that would make sense. And I'd gladly get it for myself.

Men have always been carriers of HPV, often for a lifetime and without any symptoms.

Yeah, but right wingers don't care about STDs because, well, you know, people aren't supposed to be doing naughty stuff anyway, so they should get their just deserves. Conservatives are generally against anything that might interfere with God's divine plan to do justice to such naughty people: "...vaccine opponents claim that making it a regular part of childrens' vaccine protocol would encourage young women to be more sexually active." http://www.now.org/issues/health/122205hpvvaccine.html

Conservative icon Ronald Reagan's indifference toward the AIDS epidemic is pretty much status quo. While the AIDS epidemic began at the beginning of his presidency, he took no action until it had developed to the point where it could no longer be ignored.

"Reagan would ultimately address the issue of AIDS while president. His remarks came May 31, 1987 (near the end of his second term), at the Third International Conference on AIDS in Washington. When he spoke, 36,058 Americans had been diagnosed with AIDS and 20,849 had died. The disease had spread to 113 countries, with more than 50,000 cases."
