John Boehner: Planned Parenthood War Is One We Want To Win (VIDEO)

First Posted: 02/28/11 09:23 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:35 PM ET

House Speaker John Boehner discussed an ongoing effort being mounted by House Republicans to defund Planned Parenthood in an interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network published online on Sunday.

Republicans in the House recently voted to strip federal funding from the organization. HuffPost's Elise Foley noted at the time that the proposal approved in the lower congressional chamber cut funds for contraceptives, HIV tests, cancer screenings and reproductive health services.

Speaking to CBN's David Brody, Boehner didn't mince words in talking about the political fight against Planned Parenthood, which doesn't currently use federal funds for abortion services.

"The goal here again is to cut spending and keep the government open," he explained. "I met with a lot of religious leaders earlier today to talk about the strategy and I think it's important that we understand that what we want to do here is win the war not just win a battle and there will be an opportunity sometime in order to win the big war and we're looking for that opportunity. I don't think this short term CR is the opportunity that will get us there."

As for how the offensive against Planned Parenthood factors into the prospect of a government shutdown, here's an excerpt of the exchange that went down:

David Brody: "So in essence you're saying if it comes to that you're not going to shut down the government over the defunding of Planned Parenthood."

Speaker John Boehner: "There are a lot of options on the table but I don't think in the short term CR (Continuing Resolution) this is the opportunity we're looking for."

The government always cuts funding where it will affect people the most so when they say they want to raise taxes they can give you a reason to agree. "Hey we don't have the money to fund Planned Parenthood but if you agree that we should raise taxes then you can have it back."
Conniving, wouldn't you agree?

And this "war" on Planned Parenthood, which provides health services (not merely abortion serivces) to people who would otherwise not have ANY option is creating JOBS exactly how? Did I miss something?

seperation of church and state! seperation of church and state! you shouldn't be consulting religious leaders for legislative plans! Didn't Christine O' Donnell just learn this from law school students?

No fooling. Without a birth certificate that fetus has zero rights. Why, it can even be aborted without shame.

John Boehner and his ilk do NOT care in the least about abortion in any real way. When he shows me that his house is full of unwanted kids he has adopted and loved unconditionally, especially including unwanted, special-needs kids, THEN, I will believe that he cares about abortion. Since that will not happen in a million years, John Boehner will remain exactly what he has always been: A selfish man with a selfish desire to be important. Nothing more and nothing less.

Good point - completely agree.

I think it was Einstein who defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results each time. Well, we keep electing Republicans, and, assuming we are not insane, we have to learn to expect that the same thing is going to happen every time: Specifically, they are going to declare war on everything we like to think this nation stands for, you know, things like equality and fairness and opportunity. Republicans want none of that. They are seeking a world where a few plutocrats control all capital and a few religious fanatics control all thought.

Boehner wants to fast track us to the 3rd world where 50% of the babies die before they're 5 because of lack of nutrition and health care.

I think president Obama needs to send a thank you not to the republican party. they are doing everything they can to ignite the base of the democratic party and to isolate independent voters. I think the republican party is being advised by a democratic operative. It is totally impossible for them not to see how everything they are doing is going to backfire on them...This next election cycle will be the undoing of the republican party. America will become a three party system. The Tea Party will become the political arm of american corporations. why pay lobbyist when you can just create a party and the republicans will be the party of social issues.

I think they are counting on the treasonous Supreme Court's treasonous Citizen's United decision to flood the races with so much cash on their side that they can convince voters that the moon is made out of cheese for one day so they can get elected. They don't care about winning over the people, they just want their vote on that one crucial day so they can abuse us some more.

I was recently in Austin Texas. Two TP's tried to convince me that their causes were just. What they convinced me of:
1. They only care for themselves. They have no interest in the common good.
2. They think women should be in the home schooling their young.
3. They think all women should be under the guidance of a man, who makes the decisions.
4. Theirs is the only way, other opinions have no merit.

Great! I'm confused though, John, how does this create JOBS? I must have missed something.

It doesn't. He doesn't care about jobs or unemployment. In fact, his corporate benefactors are profiting off the misery of the unemployed. They are raking in record profits so why would Boehner want to do anything that might alter the current formula?

And how many unwanted children will the Boehner clan sign up for? Or will they just wait until they are born and cut off their medical, housing and food and kill them off that way?

It isn't murder until it's born and Boehner and his pals won't have any fun unless what they are doing is actual murder.

He's talking about saving money yet he meets with conservative Christian religious leaders? Is there any doubt who this war is against? If he's talking about saving money, shouldn't he be talking to economists or financial experts? Does he go to a banker for religious advice? Onward christian soldiers...Boehner are trying to turn the US the Christian Iran....which is fine with the Retealiban...not so much with their beloved constitution.

They don't really love the constitution. That's just more smoke and mirrors. They pay lip service to the Constitution. They don't really love it. In fact they hate it. That's why everything they do is so unconstitutional. Just a couple of months ago there were three separate Amendments that conservatives were trying to get rid of. If they loved the Constitution like they claim they wouldn't be trying to get rid of Amendments. The primary reason they hate the Constitution is because it guarantees rights to all of the citizens, even the chattel. Republicans don't like it when chattel gets rights. If they had it to do over again today, the republicans would have chosen the South in the Civil War. They certainly would have chosen to keep slavery going as long as possible. They just loved that cheap labor. They still love it. They love it so much they are trying to get rid of the rights that prevent us from slipping back into a slave economy. This is why they are union busting in Wisconsin, because they hate America and Americans and everything they stand for. They hate our history because it is not one with religious history. They pretend that we are the "holy land" but there is nothing about America in their bible.
