Google Explains Gmail Fail That 'Erased' Users' Emails, Disabled Accounts

Gmail

Days after all emails for thousands of Gmail users mysteriously disappeared along with other personal settings, Google has come forth with an explanation--but many users are still unable to get into their accounts.

The culprit? A software bug which affected "several copies of the data," according to Google's official blog. "Some copies of mail were deleted, and we've been hard at work over the last 30 hours getting it back for the people affected by this issue," Google wrote.

The problem originated in a storage software update that created an "unexpected bug," leading to 0.02 percent of Gmail users to lose all their email--about 40,000 of the 200 million who currently use the email service. Google promptly stopped spreading the new software and returned to their old version. Fortunately for the users--and for Google--the company does back up files:

To protect your information from these unusual bugs, we also back it up to tape. Since the tapes are offline, they're protected from such software bugs. But restoring data from them also takes longer than transferring your requests to another data center, which is why it's taken us hours to get the email back instead of milliseconds.

According to Fortune, Google would need about 200,000 tapes to backup their users, which would amount to a "stack of tapes four kilometers high."

Google's App Status dashboard currently shows a green checkmark for Gmail and other apps--"no issues." But many users are still barred from their accounts, with the little green check serving only to infuriate. Instead of being able to login, they receive the following message:

We are currently working on your account because an error occurred with your mail storage. Your account data and messages are safe. However, you won't be able to log in until our team is finished.

We can't predict exactly how long this will take, but if you are still unable to access your account in 48 hours, please contact us with your username at gmail-maintenance@google.com . We apologize for the disruption.

As recently as 10:17 AM EST, user pamohearn voiced her concerns on the help forum: "OK,
so now I am totally freaking out. i haven't had any kind of email access since saturday, and when I went to the dashboard, it says that all should be fixed as of today (green check, no wrench) but I still have no email access through my primary account."

Other users are more angry than desperate. Yuzucat wrote, "I feel like google has betrayed our trust and is trying to pretend that everything is back to normal." And some users have reported that they have lost mail, after the restore. Juan.Guapo said, "I've lost some mail, not all to be sure but definitely some important things. The first thing I noticed was my "Starred" e-mail folder was empty. I do not trust Google with my e-mail anymore."

Others reported missing messages from September 2010 to today and all their drafts, in addition to missing their starred emails.

The additional article linked on this page mentions Mozilla Thunderbird as a good free tool to use as a back up to your Google, or other cloud-based email. I have used it for years, and have yet to be inconvenienced by the periodic crashes of these cloud-based email clients. I am not a technology pro...it is pretty easy to install, configure and use.

I'm really utterly and truly glad that Google was in charge of my school email account (I go to a university in Ontario) and now, I can't get access to it. I'm sure this is assisting my grades, and I'm sure *I* of all people, won't be held accountable when I don't receive assignments, grades, class cancellations, etc through my email. I sure am excited.

If you are having problems logging in and you want ask a question on the help forum you have to--log in-- to be able to ask a question.

To those of you making snarky remarks: email is not my life and I do not spend my work day in front a computer. That doesn't mean that email isn't important to me. If you have been able to access your email the past few days instead of going in Google's circles, count your blessings and don't comment. This has nothing to do with you.

Hmmm, thankfully, I've not had this trouble (I can't imagine what everyone has been going through) but I use Time Machine so I assume I can recall info that I had - or is this incorrect? Hmmm...

It depends how you use Gmail. If you connect your Gmail account to a Mail program that is resident on your desktop or laptop then Time Machine will back up all the messages that are downloaded to your machine. If you just use Gmail via your browser then all your messages are not on your local computer so Time Machine does not back them up.

If you aren't sure then you are probably using it via your browser (that's the default) and so not backing them up with Time Machine.

I found that out when my hard drive crashed. Now all my business data is backed up online -- SOS Online is really good, highly-rated.

Yay.... If it's important enough to go crazy over loosing than maybe back it up yourself. I don't back up my email, but then I don't give a damn if I lose any.
This makes me feel a lot better about mirroring my drives and keeping a redundant back up of really important things offiste instead of using online backup. The cloud is nice, cheep, and really cool; but personally I prefer to keep control of my own data.

I have to ask as non of my clients have been affected by this so no way for me to test but have you attempted to connect via pop or imap? If the issue is what it appears to be it wont make a difference but if the data is intact then either two may work. Otherwise email them about your issue and they will get you back up.

It's Wednesday morning and I still have nothing either - and absolutely no information from Google about whether they plan on reinstating the account. I have tried filling out their forms - which send you in circles, I've tried calling several of their corporate headquarters but you can't ever speak to a live person. It's bloody Big Brother. I'm assuming since it's been nearly four days that my account is gone and Google is just hoping this will all go away. I don't even care about the emails, but having to switch all of my contacts will take forever.

I will never use Google for anything ever again.

Why do people implode if they have to go a day without email? Creeping zombie jesus. go read a freakin book, go outside get some sun. If it's that urgent they'll call you on your other, cellular obsession.

So, no one is thinking: Sabotage? C'mon! Google won't say this...But I think this is really an attempt at discrediting Google by some other company hoping to get into supplying us with an email account and an account where we chat face-to-face with all of our friends...in online book form? Any questions?

That other company is doing some SERIOUS selling of our data...if we let them...

You'd be surprised the people who list everything and then neglect to work on their privacy settings. Young people especially seem to be oblivious to this.

They do not have tpend a couple of bucks. Gmail and Google apps is the only major that offers true imap and pop for free up to 50 users. Anybody that depends on the cloud with sensitive data and not have a local backup is. A Foo.l

Whenever yu hear the term "The Cloud" and how wonderful it is with someone else storing, controlling, securing your data, remember this Gmail/Google event.
04:57 PM on 03/01/2011
THEY ARE NOT USING THE CLOUD
06:03 PM on 03/01/2011
Are you kidding me?!?! Google IS the cloud!

http://code.google.com/apis/storage/

Google Developer Storage is simply an open API into how they do their OWN storage, just like Amazon's S3.
