James Franco: 'F*** The Yale Daily News'

James Franco Yale Daily News

UPDATE: Cokey Cohen of the Yale Daily News responds:

"Combined with his Oscars hosting performance and in accordance with the opinion of commenters on my last blog, I'm becoming convinced that James Franco's whole life is a form of postmodern performance art. In that context, his Twitter fits right in."

Does James Franco hate his own college's paper?

The actor-student-performance artist-writer tweeted this NSFW picture Tuesday, featuring a portrait of him taken from below and artfully emblazoned with "F*** THE YALE DAILY NEWS" in red Photoshop paint.

Perhaps Franco's seeming rage has its merits. The YDN has not been kind to the PhD candidate as of late, publishing pieces poking fun at his Oscars gig and deriding his use of Twitter (in the latter, columnist Cokey Cohen wrote that Franco's tweets "sort of suck").

Can't we all just get along?

James is too much of a chicken to address the mainstream media's criticism of his Oscar performance, so he picks on a student instead.

Franco appears to be very immature.

It is true that everyone thought he was the most terrible presenter ever, especially mainstream media which would probably find no excuse for that kind of lackluster bust.

I'm not reading anything anyone named "cokey" has to say, and neither should James. Be choosy!

You know I read the Yale student piece on him, and it was not that bad. He should read what others are saying about the guy after the Oscars! ha!

that pic in that tweet that said 'f the yale daily news' was obviously tongue in cheek and silly. if you read the article it isn't that negative about him.

You are right, of course. From HuffPo today -- Cokey Cohen is actually a fan of Franco:

This whole situation does seem a bit high-school-ish. And as James Franco is a celebrity (whom I happen to admire), one has to question how the writers at Yale chose to write about him. He's probably covered in their newspapers as much as Lindsay Lohan is covered in every Tabloid magazine ( LiLo and JaFro's overexposure in the press is the only way these two can be compared). He may just be their hot ticket, and they continuously write not-so-nice stories about him because they know many people would want to read it. Think about it......

It's high schoolish for Franco to respond in the way he did.

I'm not denying it.

Giving out PhD's to people based upon the coverage which they receive from the media is as misguided as it is self-destructive. Institutions which try to "boost their brand recognition" by doing so risk not only failing in their objective but bastardizing what respect the "brand" has thus far.

Given no actual familiarity with the quality of Mr. Franco's work nor with his academic ethic I can make no so assertion. Simultaneously I hope that YDN has such a familiarity if they're taking it upon themselves to deride him publicly and in print to boot.

I will say however that this response, if indeed posted by James, leaves a little to be desired.

Yeah, I am sure that Jodie Foster received her Princeton degree and Natalie Portman received
her Harvard degree because both schools wanted the media coverage.

Foster went to Yale.

There are dozens of celebs who earned their PhD's through hard work and due in large part to a high IQ, that isn't a secret. There are even more who have the capacity, but lack the time.

Having media exposure doesn't mean that someone isn't intellectually gifted, which is what I assume you think my statement is meant to imply. I also have no intention of getting into the argument as to whether or not fame greases the wheels of Ivy League admissions because there is hardly any need to do so.

This guy is weird and was horrible at the Oscars.
