Jon Stewart Mocks CNN's Attempts At Viewer Interactivity (VIDEO)

First Posted: 03/01/11 11:51 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:35 PM ET

Jon Stewart mocked some of CNN's recent attempts at viewer interactivity on Monday's "Daily Show."

Stewart wondered why, during the daytime, the network was running YouTube clips and literally asking viewers to pick what stories they wanted to see on air, instead of running more hard-hitting pieces. (Of course, Stewart's animus for some of CNN's programming clearly does not extend to his favorite host on the network, Anderson Cooper.)

"You'd think there would be some way for CNN to use its reporting team's unmatched size and breadth to do something really impressive," Stewart said. Speaking after a clip in which Suzanne Malveaux asked viewers to text in their choice for what story CNN would run in the next hour, he was even more incredulous.

"You're not even news anchors anymore," he said. "You're just news VJs."

This is why so called US news channels are pure garbage.

Isn't there a little too much interactivity in news already? I mean, the point is kind of to get facts, not to participate in the facts. Am I wrong?

In the May/June 1978 issue of Columbia Journalism Review, media critic Ron Powers penned the famous "Eyewitless News" article. 30 plus years later, broadcast TV news is dumber and lamer than ever.
I have a photocopy of the article and will keep it forever. I'd like to see a 2011 version.

I watched a little of this the other day. A true tragedy. Add to that their weak attempts to create controversy by being antagonistic to their guests and you are witness to the slow death of a once-great news organization.

I have really tried to watch CNN, but they are but a shadow of their former selves. Stewart is really picking the low hanging fruit here, but at least he's making the best of it.

This was actually pretty funny to watch on The Daily Show. I have not viewed CNN in quite some time, but if they truly wait for viewers to vote on which stories they report, they have lost the true purpose of news.

I would not be at all surprised if they were reporting on Charlie Sheen 24/7 right now because people find it curious, but it does not affect our daily lives. (nn)

This is a new low for CNN. As they say on ESPN NFL Football, "Come On Man!"

I agree with Jon.  If "we" are to pick the news stories, what are their jobs?
Talk about selling out. Do we get to pick what the correspondents wear next?
