Haley Barbour: Obama Is Deliberately Trying To Drive Up Energy Prices

First Posted: 03/02/11 10:44 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:35 PM ET

WASHINGTON -- Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour (R) is accusing the Obama administration of deliberately driving up energy costs, comparing the destructiveness of high gas prices to the financial troubles of Wall Street.

"This administration's policies have been designed to drive up the cost of energy in the name of reducing pollution, in the name of making very expensive alternative fuels more economically competitive," said Barbour in a speech to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington, DC on Wednesday morning.

Barbour cited 2008 comments by Energy Secretary Steven Chu, who floated the idea of gradually raising gasoline taxes to convince more Americans to adopt energy-friendly habits. "Somehow we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe," he said at the time. President Obama has dismissed the idea of raising the gasoline tax, and in 2009, Chu also distanced himself from his earlier remarks, saying that it would be "completely unwise to want to increase the price of gasoline."

"In 2008, $4 gasoline brought my state to its knees before Wall Street melted down," said Barbour, underscoring his point.

In remarks to reporters after the speech, Barbour repeated that the Obama administration's policy "is to drive up energy prices."

"In the United States, it's harder to get a permit to mine coal than it is to get a heart transplant," he said. "If you look at the moratorium in the Gulf yesterday, it was announced there was a drilling permit issued for the Gulf of Mexico. Turns out it wasn't for a new well, it was to resume drilling for a well that they shut down, because the federal government made them shut down. We're going to produce about 13 percent less petroleum in the United States this year than last year. Now how is that good policy at any time when energy security is supposed to be a priority, but particularly at a time of turmoil in the Middle East and the oil-producing states? I hope the Obama administration is going to announce a reversal of course. But I'm not optimistic."

Barbour also backed Gov. Scott Walker (R-Wis.) and his controversial plan to take away the collective bargaining rights of public employees, again turning the issue back on the president and asking why federal employees don't have those same rights.

"Federal employees don't have collective bargaining rights," he said. "The president can unilaterally freeze their pay. So the idea you guys have given the country is that there's just some constitutional right to collective bargain. Half the states don't have it all -- my state does not have collective bargaining -- or they limit it. Federal employees are not allowed to have collective bargaining for pay, for pensions, for health care. So what Gov. Walker is trying to do -- and what the legislature has the votes to pass, by large margins -- is the law in many many other states. So do I think he's overreached? No."

Throughout his address, Barbour also stressed that the "main thing" governments should be focused on is job creation and economic growth, and criticized the Obama administration for instead prioritizing health care legislation.

* And here I thought it was corrupt power that help place these confused ass-backward "speakers" in political "power". All along, I had thought the world had ceased making ludes; clearly it is a reserved medication for "Governer's Only".

"Barbour also stressed that the "main thing" governments should be focused on is job creation and economic growth, and criticized the Obama administration for instead prioritizing health care legislation"

* Sure !! Making a million jobs available will fix everything, even if the work force is suffering from high blood pressure, ulcers, random heart atacks and occasional strokes with limited sight for cataracts that can't be afforded to get health care to be well as that job market keeps everyone running to beat everyone to the front of the line for that lucky minimum wage job that just opened up because the last guy dropped dead due to untreated diabetes. Good for YOU Mr. Gov., take another lude and give Obama another lecture, as he must be nuts for wanting silly ol' health care for this country !

Does he really believe it? Why? Ah! That was the way the Republicans, with Haley Barbour as chief lobbyist, and Republican party chairperson, governed: Mess up a Muslim country (Iraq, Afghanistan, Iraq again) in such a way that oil prices rise, then lower the prices a year before election time. (Read: American Hero, from which the film "Wag the Dog" was made).

Guess what, Haley, there are some people that aren't snakes.

Gas prices are going up again for the same reason they went up last time: not because of any action taken by President Obama, but because the oil companies are run by a greedy bunch of b@$t@rds.

If you have to point fingers at the Oval Office, Senator Barbour, get in the Wayback Machine and revisit the Cheney regime.

Barbour again shows selective memory- first with his experience with civil rights and now with what Obama's attitude and policy is on gasoline.

Haley Barbour is deliberately trying to make us misunderstand market overhedging based on unrest in a relatively small player in the oil market.

That's unbelievable!

Haley has a secret plan to drive up the cost of flood insurance.

And it's very, very simple.

Shhh. Don't ruin the surprise.

It's a plot, I tell you! A plot! Of course, the fact that it's the oil companies that are raking in profits hand over fist doesn't seem to even register for Barbour.

we use up 4-6% of the world's remaining oil reserves every year. You do the math.

Well, theoretically, that means we'll never run out completely, what with asymptotic curves and all. Right wingers seem to think that all it will take is to just keep drilling, as if there is oil everywhere just waiting for a well. Heaven forbid we should actually really develop alternatives.

Is Obama deliberately driving up the cost of carbon fuels? No, but I wish he were.

I am under the impression that oil prices have been on the rise for several years now… fluctuating up, up, up! Like for almost a whole decade while Dubya was Pres. we in America have been paying at the pump. That's the real oil man. Hell, I even paid over $4.25 in Good ‘Ole Biloxi, Mississippi in 2008. Pres. Obama was not in office. Sorry to say Gov. Haley Barbour has Barney Rubbles’ brain.

Boss Hoggs I think you are confused about who drove up gas prices...

When President Bush took office on January 20, 2001, the national average gas price was $1.46 per gallon. Six and a half years later, on August 27, 2007, the national average gas price had jumped to $2.76, roughly 89% higher. Compounded annually, this represents about a 10% jump each year Bush has been in office.

Now, let’s compare the numbers over the same time period for President Clinton.

When Clinton took office on January 20, 1993, the national average gas price was $1.06 per gallon. six and a half years later, the national average gas price had jumped to $1.22, roughly 15% higher. Compounded annually, this represents about a 2% jump each year.

ROTFLM.....!!! Boss Hoggs !!! lol.......... He would have wished for the health care priority if he had been in Malibu, CA that summer of 08' when gas hit $6.25 and he fell out from a heart attack but the remote area requires a helicopter airlift for a mere starting rate of 10K to fly you an est. 3-5 miles.

Ol' Gov. Hoggs can come to Los Angeles, as the sun is starting to shine too much, we just hit $4.25 for the cheap stuff and summer travel ins't here just YET, but we can always count on a whole paycheck to fill up for the insane commutes for a few days on the gridlock freeways of the lovely
City of Angels !

Thanks for the early morning giggles SJ !! (You rock)

Yeah Mr. Hoggs is the last person we should listen to. His state is always in the bottom of everything and he hasn't done anything to improve it. Yeah, this is the guy we really need at the helm of this country...

Thx...SJ
