iPad 2 Announcement: Users React To Apple's News

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 03/02/11 02:43 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:35 PM ET

iPad 2 is here, and everyone's got something to say about the newest Apple creation.

Twitter is abuzz with thoughts on the "magical" new device, as Twitterers weigh in on it and the newest apps Apple announced. The reactions are seemingly more positive than negative, though some questions still remain.

Why no retina display? How powerful are the cameras? Is iOS 5 on the way?

Everyone has a little something to say, especially whether or not people will be trading in their original iPads for the updated version.

Find details on the iPad 2 and photos from today's Apple event here.

Everything Apple does will get criticized. Now they can't even upgrade their products without being accused of planned obsolescence. The people who don't buy Apple products feel like it is their obligation to convince each and every one of us to no longer buy their products. We have been had; hoodwinked; bamboozled; etc etc...This has to be the funniest bunch of people in the history of mankind who actually spend their time trying to convince you that you are somehow inferior because you like the product!!!! This has to be the Twilight Zone.

Again we have Jobs and Apple, like a prudish old aunt, deciding what we can and cannot see -- just like the folks who tried to ban the outstanding work of fiction in the 20th century (ULYSSES, in the opinion of most literary critics), who put Mae West in jail for "suggestive" material (she never used an obscene word, or wrote or spoke anything truly indecent) who banned fiction by the 2oth century's most esteemed literary critic (Edmund Wilson's GIRL WITH THE GOLDEN HAIR), and on top of that, censored or suppressed sharp political commentary on the 'explanation' that it was 'defamatory.' Shame, shame on Jobs and Apple!

Did Steve censor any of these books you mentioned? You're wacked.

apple is not censoring anybody.. if you want to read n.a.m.b.l.a. literature, you can find it and read it all you want, just not from the app store.. you might try android, just watch out for viruses

yawn! just an overhyped shiny new product from apple which will be made obsolete in a year

forget the (admittedly superior) build quality. it doesn't have the best tech specs out there and yet people will fall for the hype and drop hundreds of their hard earned bucks to buy it.

now don't get me wrong. i do love apple products as majority of them are well designed and easy to use. however i do not love the fact as to how they now blatantly incorporate "planned obsolescence" into many of their products.

one way of doing this is to ensure that any improvements at all are delivered in small increments. that way, apple gets to do big product releases every year and as a result people will faithfully and even eagerly purchase their products every single year...

"which will be made obsolete in a year"

How? I have a lot of older apple products that still work just fine and do exactly what I need and want. My current oldest is a 2003 iBook Dual USB and it still has the original battery!

My iPad (1st Gen) still works fine and I have no current plans to replace it. I have a 4th Gen iPod Touch that has retina display and dual cameras so I don't need a new iPad.

----------------------------------------------------------------
incorporate "planned obsolescence"

And no other computer manufacturer does this?

Actually the apple line is very stable. Yes there are upgrades and changes but that happens throughout the industry. Every Mac I've bought has still been compatible with the software of the past generation except when they switched to Intel CPU's.

"I don't need a new iPad".

Yeah but if you decided to get one anyway? I think it would really upset some people. It's like we're back in the 60's, when neighbors used to get envious over how many cars you owned.

I'm not sure who the iHaters are the most miffed at? Apple, or the people that can afford their products?

I wonder if they hate art collectors too?

one of the the main problems i have with apple is that they would rather you buy a new product instead of fixing your old one. for example when i took my old ipod for repairs (2.5 years old) comments about the "unavailability of spares" mingled with "strong" suggestions about the availability of newer models.

and about the "planned obsolescence", take the ipad 1st gen model. it's a good bet that after 2, maybe 3 years time, many of the apps currently being used or offered in the apps store will be unavailable. the device may still be working perfectly but anyone who tries to install newer apps into it may encounter problems.

maybe apple as a company have gotten used to launching products every year. cos (aparently) unlike you and me, thousands of people will discard perfectly working models bought only last year for brand new ones with only minor improvements featurewise as long as they bear the apple symbol.

and the sad part is they will be perfectly happy to do the upgrade cos it will enable them to have the latest product incarnations. (and with it bragging rights perhaps?)

I have the original and love it. Though I admit I dont use it for anything fancy or advanced. I've no interest in trading it in, although I consider whether an upgrade is better than getting a laptop, etc. For work purposes - I teach online.

in any case, there is a certain amount of pressure that goes along with the constant evolution of technology. The "real" geeks tend to look down their nose should they run into you and you have the first generation anything. As as the case with all else in our society, we are never able to allow the elderly (in any form) the respect they deserve.

I hope you are right as I LOVE great devices. I doubt it seriously though. Unless these "phones" you are talking about suddenly start showing up with 9 to 10 inch screen they arent in the same genre as a pad. The whole idea of a pad is a notebook lite. Im actually seeing when I gaze in to my crystal ball pads devouring larger and larger segments of the notebook market as they become more powerful. The interfaces are just tooooo good. Not saying they will EVER "kill" notebooks as they have their valuable place. I am saying that there is a very large segment of the population that doesnt utilize 20% of a notebooks potential and for them.....pads are just perfect.

The new phones will have the ability and power of a pad and the flexibility to have a large screen and keyboard. Take a look at this preview of the new Motorola phone. This new generation of phones will not completely kill pads or laptops, but they will take a large portion from each market. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZX15TrMjR3w&NR=1

The one thing that they haven't added but could still do is make it drawing capable. So that for Graphics work you can use it as an art board. That would be useful. They could also make a medical version to which you can attach med devices for scanning patients bio signs and then sending the results to either a hospital or doctor.

A lot of people said the first iPad would fail but $9 billion dollars in 9 months says otherwise.

I'm sure the naysayers will come out of the woodwork and once again doubt Apple again.

i totally agree.. microsoft window has always been a cr@p product, but through aggressive licensing, it somehow shows up on every generic pc built.. and there is nothing anyone can do about it, except format the drive and install or linux, or buy a mac.

the ipad is not a good product, it is exceptional. it is a game changer, and it is selling like no other product in history. marketing is good, the product is fantastic. 15million units in 9 months, and a refresh, with another model rumored to be unveiled before nov.. just face it.. apple ate your lunch this time, like they did with the ipod and the iphone.

but there will always be people like you who just dont get it.. it reminds me of a friend of mine who bought a car and complained that it did not come with a cup holder.. while at the same time, refusing to allow anyone to drink in the car anyway.

how about quality and stability. im sure the doctors (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/04/09/AR2010040906341.html) using it dont care about coolness, or the pilots who use it for maps and navigation (http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/2011/03/03/353907/faa-approval-of-ipad-efb-for-executive-jet-paves-way-for.html).

you keep telling yourself its all about style or marketing, stick to your guns, i respect stubborness to a certain degree.. but 9 billion dollars and 15 million units later.. im not sure your style/marketing arguement hold water anymore. it seems to be pretty popular with or without a usb port or flash. and the walled garden is doing pretty good as well, without the threat viruses (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-12633923) open source always brings with it.

but we will see.. by the time the copycats bring something to market worth considering, im sure apple will be on the ipad 3 at a competitive price point (http://www.zdnet.com/blog/perlow/apples-secret-ipad-advantage-the-supply-chain/15813).. i hope the competition can keep up.

They are offering $300 for my 32g with 3G. Hard to say if that's good or bad.

Certainly, it's not as good as trading in an iPhone where I usually get 80% of the price of a new one.

you mean the discount they are offering to clear their inventory.. amazing how you make it sound like they are desperate to sell a backlog of inventory. 9 billion dollars.. 15 million units sold.. and 9 months later a refresh.. and another model on the way before the year is out.. im pretty sure they doing fine despite you.

apple isnt worried about selling what they currently have in the distribution channel.. it kinda sounds like your the one who is worried.. worried about an OS that isnt ready for prime time (http://www.zdnet.com/blog/mobile-news/motorola-xoom-and-honeycomb-8212-not-ready-for-prime-time/1105), a robust, secure and family-friendly ecosystem (http://gigaom.com/mobile/watch-out-ipad-honeycomb-has-16-tablet-apps/) or hardware that cant compete on price points (http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2011/02/ipad-price/).

keep up the faith DRay.. maybe one day beleaguered apple will eventually die.. but not today.

I have an android phone and love it. I was waiting for video cameras before I bought myself a tablet and was thinking about the Xoom but its $800 price tag locked me out. Now Ipad 2 is out with video and a $499 price tag (I have no desire for the data plan). 16 gigs is plenty for me.

This will be my first Apple product since my Apple 2+ (yes back in 1982...BRUN Baby!!!)

dont listen to DRay.. even if you do hold off and wait for a knockoff copycat.. they will likely have a cr@p OS with viruses (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-12633923), small to no selection of apps, and a high price margin for something with a 16% return rate. they will also force you into a 2 year data plan.

DRay obviously works for one of these knockoff companies, because there is no other reason for someone to suggest a cr@p product over a quality product (or an exceptional one like the ipad).

I agree completely. Apple has such a poor business model that when Jobs is gone, the stock value will drop faster than the eye can see.

Don't forget your history....go back and look what happened to Apple in the mid/late 1990's when Jobs was out of the picture and after it seems that they could do no wrong...feels like deja vu all over again...

You are incorrect.

The reason Apple almost failed back in the mid-80's was because the board put someone in the CEO spot who didn't even KNOW what a computer was.

I'd bet all my Apple stock that Jobs has a line of succession in place that will see to it that Apple would continue to innovate in the event of his death (which I trust will be a loooong way off).

What is this chicanery.

I wanted to talk to this device and have it reply and then do things for me.

I wanted to be able to sit on a park bench during sunlit hours and read a book on this.

I wanted it to have a photo radar beam built it so I can have the people charged that speed down my street.

I wanted it to scan in all the business cards I come across.

I wanted it to absorb every piece of plastic that I have in my wallet and reproduce it on demand.

So, I have no choice left but to order the Notion Ink Adam tablet.
