iPad 2 OFFICIAL: Price, Release Date, Details From Apple Event (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 03/02/11 01:19 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:35 PM ET

Apple officially announced the iPad 2 at a press conference today in San Francisco, California.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs appeared at the event and announced it will include front and rear-facing cameras for video, a much faster processor and it will be "dramatically thinner."

The price will be the same, starting at $499, and it begins shipping in the U.S. on March 11 and March 25 internationally. The iPad 2 comes in both white or black versions, and both AT&T and Verizon will support it.

You can find complete specs for the iPad 2 at Apple.com.

Post-PC or not, here's the real deal about the second-gen iPad: http://pinoytutorial.com/techtorial/ipad-2-release-date-specs-update-2011/

this is pc/windows all over again. here you have various manufacturers trying to copy and compete against ipad on the hardware end which rely on android or whatever, an entirely separate entity.

nothing will give the consumer the singular experience that the ipad will because there's no cohesion between hardware and software, apps, etc...

so anyone who is focused on technical specs like RAM, hard disk capacity, processor power, screen resolution, etc...is missing the point completely.

it's NOT about the device, it's about the totality of the experience, which motorola, samsung, toshiba, dell or whoever can't offer or control because they are just hardware manufacturers.

Eh, I still don't see the appeal. I don't understand what's so great about the new ipad. You need an even faster processor to surf the internet or do any other low cpu intensive task? It already seemed plenty thin to me. What does 33% thinner matter really?

More processing power might not be 'sexy' but it is very significant. I'm getting one for work, and it will be put through the ringer. I need all the processing power I can get.

Reviewers say it feels better to hold now - almost like a e-Reader. The increase in power matter only if you are a gamer. More advanced games will appear. I'm hoping WoW will come to iPad 3.

So what to do with our iPad 1s?

I wonder whether Best Buy's Buy Back program buys them back.

i love my 1st gen ipad, but not sure i want to make the jump to 2nd gen with still no multi-tasking or flash. also, not having a case to protect "my baby" makes me feel a little antsy.

i guess i'll have to wait for the more critical reviews to come out before i can decide, but i know a can't wait too long, or soon my 1st gen will be a really expensive paper-weight.

Stupid Americans. Keep buying this Chinese made Trash.

Steve Jobs and Apple are still using Chemicals in the Chinese Plants that are killing workers and refuse to address it.

Where do you think all Apples Manufacturing Technical jobs went, FOXXCONN.

You American fools flock to buy TRASH at the expense of Human beings.
08:19 AM on 03/03/2011
And you somehow manage to go through life without buying anything made in China?
I'd take a look at some of the components inside that computer you hide behind as you sling insults from wherever you live.
03:33 PM on 03/03/2011
It can be difficult for manufacturers to dictate internal policies to sub-contractors as the often lie and cover up the misdeeds to keep their customer.

Now you can look at that statement at many different levels. Does Apple lie to it customers to keep them as customers? Possibly in some instances. However looking at the next layers down, you are dealing with Chinese factories that will say anything to make a buck. Been there and seen it first hand. Maybe these folks should redirect their anger towards the governments that allow their own people to be abused and exploited in those factories. OH WAIT! No they won't because they are equity owners of so many of these factories and directly profit from them!

And the trash you speak of is not being designed in Cupertino, but rather poorly copied and knocked off in Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Shanghai and pumped out of Walmarts and others.

Xoom is doomed, they better talk up and sell the wifi version if they want student sales or the will buy iPad, they will not get a Verizon contract.

Considering Rim still holds the #1 slot, and Android just surpassed iOS for the #2 slot, your comment is pretty much a typical Apple fanboy-ism. Android is doing very well, Xoom is a solid Android device, and many other companies are coming out with more Android 3,0 devices.

None of this takes anything away from Apple, except the illusion that they are the end-all-be-all in technology.

Oh, and on what basis will students not get a Verizon contract? (...especially if Verizon subsidizes the price of the Xoom which AT&T nor Verizon do with a 3g iPad....)
07:23 PM on 03/03/2011
Hardware-wise, the Xoom still looks better on paper than the iPad2. It won't win the battle against the iPad2, but as long as Motorola doesn't flub the marketing (it has been doing OK so far,) the Xoom should get its own set of fans. Just like there are people who chose Android smartphone over the iPhone, there will be people who choose the Xoom over the iPad2.

Still not worth me buying me was really expecting more the only major differences is the camera (which I don't need) and the other is just an software update. Other than that I have to ask myself is it worth $500?
03:38 PM on 03/03/2011
Lets wait to see what APPs utilize the newly added Gyro with that camera. If you think the older version, or current depending on how you see it, is worth $399 that is now an option. They are in the CLEARANCE section of the Apple website.
06:32 AM on 03/03/2011
I can't stand being subjected to things like $40 proprietary adapters just to use HDMI and being forced to endure their PC software to interface with the device. But regardless, you can't really dispute the success and quality of the iPad.

That being said, I really wish there were a comparable windows or android device but there simply isn't anything on par with the iPad 2 both in price and quality. I'll probably end up buying one...

Been waiting for weeks, but it has always been sold out. However Engadget loves the ExoPC and gave it wonderful reviews.

Can you finally read the thing in sunlight? I really don't need one but at some point I may consider getting one if I can read the thing out doors the same way I read my Kindle.

you might want to look at Notion Ink's adam. they have a dual function display. the PixelQ screen can act basically as e-ink in the sun or regular lcd. they are a small startup from India making android tablets. 10" screen, a 185 deg swivel camera and the tablet is made with the cg shifted so it is easier to hold one handed.

I'll rather buy a net-book than an Ipad 1 2 3 4 or even 10. The Ipad is ridiculously inefficient for twice the price!!

I had a net-book, it was so underpowered that I threw it at my assistant.
12:43 PM on 03/03/2011
Netbooks are worthless. I bought a Dell netbook--the keyboard was barely useable and the trackpad not at all. I was surprised that any company would release such a product. The processor strained doing any kind of video. The only benefit was the cost and the battery life. And the battery life of laptops got better and closed the gap.

So, what you are saying is that you bought a crappy one, so all netbooks are bad..? Netbook sales number in the 100s of millions; iPad and tablet sales barely have reached 20 mil.
