Whistler Spelling Bee: Logan Square Bar Hosts Spelling Contest For Grown-Ups

TONIGHT: Logan Square's Whistler Hosting Spelling Bee For Grown-Ups

"Nerds of Chicago, unite!" writes Chicago Magazine's nightlife reporter Amalie Drury about the Whistler's Wednesday night event. The Logan Square bar-cum-art space frequently hosts live music and literary readings, but this week it's playing to the intellectual crowd with its first-ever spelling bee.

According to the bar's website, contestants "will be put through four grueling rounds in the following categories: commonly misspelled words, pop culture, literature, and science & general nerdiness."

It's unclear whether there's any particular prize for first place, other than being crowned the "World Whistler Spelling Bee Champion," but we have to assume somebody's going to buy you a shot if you come in at the top of the class.

And even without a prize, there's no cover charge -- the first 40 registrants get to compete, and all others are invited to come watch the festivities unfold. The event is being hosted by Seth Dodson and Kellen Alexander of the improv comedy group "1, 2, 3... Fag!", and the place serves a pretty decent cocktail too, if you hadn't heard. Comedy, cocktails and embarrassingly bad spelling: what's not to like?
