LOS ANGELES — A man who jumped off a cliff after learning he was a suspect in the disappearance of his wife more than a year ago was charged Thursday with murder.

David Robert Viens, 47, faces up to life in prison if convicted of murdering Dawn Marie Viens in October 2009, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office said.

Viens remained hospitalized after jumping 80 feet off an ocean bluff on the Palos Verdes Peninsula last month, and no arraignment has been set.

District attorney spokeswoman Jane Robison said she didn't know whether Viens has retained an attorney.

Family and friends reported Dawn Viens missing three weeks after she was last seen at the couple's restaurant in suburban Lomita. Authorities spent two days this week tearing up concrete floors in the cafe but did not find her body.
