It takes a strong woman to raise the Man of Steel. Looks like they found her.

Warner Brothers announced on Wednesday night that Diane Lane has been cast in the upcoming Christopher Nolan-produced, Zach Snyder-directed Superman reboot. She'll play Martha Kent, the Kansas farmer who finds Kryptonian baby Kal-El in a pod that crashed like a meteor into her field. She renames him Clark and raises him as her own, doing a pretty good job -- he grows up to be Superman.

The Superman/Clark Kent role, of course, has been handed to "True Blood" and "Tudors" star Henry Cavill. No other big roles have been cast yet, though rumors abound.

Read the official press release below:

BURBANK, CA, March 2, 2011 - Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today that Oscar®-nominated actress Diane Lane will play Martha Kent, the only mother Clark Kent has ever known, in the new Superman movie to be directed by Zack Snyder.

Snyder stated, "This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman. We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination."

Lane will star with Henry Cavill, who was recently announced as the new Clark Kent/Superman.

Lane earned an Academy Award® nomination for her performance in the 2002 drama "Unfaithful." She most recently starred in the family hit "Secretariat." She next stars in the HBO feature "Cinema Verite," opposite Tim Robbins and James Gandolfini. Lane's long list of film credits also includes "Nights in Rodanthe," "Hollywoodland," "Must Love Dogs," "Under the Tuscan Sun," "Perfect Storm," "My Dog Skip," "Chaplin," "The Cotton Club" and "A Little Romance," to name only a portion.

Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are the producers of the film. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.

Slated for release in December 2012, the new Superman movie will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

I like this lady so much! We have the same age and I've followed her career since her (my) teenage years. She's beautiful, classy (and sexy) and very - very talented!

Um, Henry Cavill was never on True Blood. They are either thinking of Joe Mangianello from TB, who was up for the part as well, or James Frain, who actually was on both True Blood and The Tudors.

Though, I would love to see a new True Blood vampire who was a member of Henry VIII's court as a human! That's a really good idea, actually...the Duke of Suffolk as a modern-day vampire.

Superman's mom??!! I don't think so -- more like Lois Lane. She's stunningly GORGEOUS and can put far younger actresses to shame. But I'll take her on the big screen any day in any role!!

OMG. I do NOT see her as Martha Kent. Lois Lane, most definately, but not Martha.

In this version, the role was defined by the qualities that Superman's mother/teacher would have--in order to have raised such a moral and responsible person/super hero, so she's not going to be exactly like those other characterizations or actresses who've played the part before.

I don't deny that I think she will play the role to the best of her ability. However, to me, she will always be the sultry woman she grew up to be in so many other films.

To a geezer like me (59 y/o) she has always been a major babe!

I see nothing wrong with this. I am curious how old they are going to make her look though. Will she only be in flashbacks? Should be very interesting either way.
