Mitt Romney: 'Obamacare Is Bad Law'

Mitt Romney 2012

LIZ SIDOTI   03/ 5/11 09:22 PM ET   AP

BARTLETT, N.H. — Call it an attempt to address an obvious political vulnerability. Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney on Saturday derided President Barack Obama's health care law – modeled in some ways after one the ex-governor signed in Massachusetts – as a misguided and egregious effort to seize more power for Washington.

"Obamacare is bad law, bad policy, and it is bad for America's families," Romney declared. "And that's the reason why President Obama will be a one-term president." He vowed to repeal it if he were ever in a position to do so, and drew hearty cheers from his Republican Party audience.

Then, raising the Massachusetts law, Romney argued that the solution for the unique problems of one state isn't the right prescription for the nation as a whole, and he acknowledged: "Our experiment wasn't perfect – some things worked, some didn't, and some things I'd change."

"One thing I would never do is to usurp the constitutional power of states with a one-size-fits-all federal takeover," Romney said, again earning applause. "The federal government isn't the answer for running health care any more than it's the answer for running Amtrak or the post office."

With that, he used his first appearance before New Hampshire Republicans since the midterm elections to start addressing head-on the issue that's certain to be a hurdle in his all-but-certain presidential campaign.

Romney's states-rights pitch is one that GOP primary voters are likely to hear over the next year as he tries to persuade them to overlook his flaws because he alone is the strongest Republican to challenge Obama on the country's top issue – the economy.

The failed candidate of 2008 is expected to formally announce a second candidacy later this spring. Campaign signs posted along the road leading to the hotel where he was speaking may have gotten a bit ahead of him. They said "Mitt Romney for President" and suggested that the theme would be "True Strength for America's Future."

Romney and his aides insisted they were old signs.

Among Romney's biggest challenges: explaining to GOP primary voters why he signed a law that became the foundation for Obama's national overhaul. Passed by Congress last year, Obama's health care law has enraged conservatives who view it as a costly government expansion and intrusion into their lives because it mandates insurance for most Americans.

Romney all but ignored the topic in his last major public appearance last month at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington.

But, since then, the similarities with Romney's 2006 law in Massachusetts have increasingly been dogging him.

Obama praised the efforts in Massachusetts during a meeting with governors at the White House, saying: "I agree with Mitt Romney, who recently said he's proud of what he accomplished on health care by giving states the power to determine their own health care solutions. He's right."

Also, Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, an Obama friend, said Romney deserves a lot of credit on health care. "One of the best things he did was to be the co-author of our health care reform, which has been a model for national health care reform," he said.

The praise from Democrats provides fodder for Romney's Republican primary opponents; some are already heaping on the criticism.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee says in his new book: "If our goal in health care reform is better care at lower cost, then we should take a lesson from RomneyCare, which shows that socialized medicine does not work." It was a play on the word that conservative critics use to describe the national law: Obamacare.

Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, who is likely to run for president against Romney, took a shot at Romney when he testified before a House committee reviewing Obama's health care overhaul. He lumped Romney in with a late liberal icon and an Obama friend in saying: "Senator (Edward M.) Kennedy and Governor Romney and then Governor Patrick, if that's what Massachusetts wants, we're happy for them. We don't want that. That's not good for us."

A GOP rising star, House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., also weighed in, saying of Romney's law: "It's not that dissimilar to Obamacare. And you probably know I'm not a big fan of Obamacare."

All that was the backdrop as Romney took the stage at the Carroll County Lincoln Day Dinner at the Attitash Grand Summit Hotel in northern New Hampshire.

First, he poked fun at the criticism that seems to be coming from all sides, saying "you may have noticed that the president and his people spend more time talking about me and Massachusetts health care than Entertainment Tonight spends talking about Charlie Sheen."

Then he turned serious and provided an explanation, emphasizing states' rights to a crowd from the "Live Free Or Die" state.

His coming candidacy may hinge on whether they buy it.

If the Supreme Court Rules Obamacare Unconstitutional, What Can President Obama Do To Save His Healthcare Plan ? He Can Chose To Ammend the U.S. Constitution By JIll Starr NJ USA

Today, U.S. District Judge, Henry E. Hudson, of, Virginia, struck down one of the three central provisions of U.S. President Barack Obama’s, new Obamacare law stating Obamacare is Unconstituional: So what can President Obama do to save his healthcare plan now?

In his ruling, Judge Henry E. Hudson said:

“An individual’s personal decision to purchase — or decline purchase — (of) health insurance from a private provider is beyond the historical reach of the U.S. Constitution...” and “No specifically constitutional authority exists to mandate the purchase of health insurance.”

Judge, Henry E, Hudson, continued:

"“Despite the laudable intentions of Congress in enacting a comprehensive and transformative health care regime, the legislative process must still operate within constitutional bounds,” Hudson added. “Salutatory goals and creative drafting have never been sufficient to offset an absence of enumerated powers.”

April Twelfth

On this day in 1861, shots fired by confederate soldiers on the Charleston Harbor island of Fort Sumter, South Carolina, signaled the start of the Civil War.

On the same day in 2006, a banner universal health care bill was signed into law by Governor Mitt Romney of Massachusetts. Once more a contender for the Republican presidential nomination, his greatest achievement as governor he feels he must now downplay because of its unfortunate link to President Obama's plan, despised by conservatives, but modeled after his own. A better approach for Mr. Romnay would be to confront the problem and deal openly with his base.

Treading on eggshells is often the path taken by the politically ambitious; suppressing a significant accomplishment, more rare.

Poor Mitt is in an awful bind
As pundits hasten to remind
His health care model is the source
Of the Obama tour de force.

That imp Obama had to smile,
A smile that he could not repress,
When praising Mitt's like statute while
His chances dwindled down to less,

Whose landmark law could be to blame
For one more disappointing loss
And causing him---that albatross!
To hang his handsome head in shame.

but "Obamacare" is a copy of "Romneycare" Romney did it first. He (Romney) has no room to criticize.

"Maine voted for Obama by a 57%-40% margin in the 2008 election, yet here they are trying to get out of following Obama's new healthcare law. Maine was the first state granted the waiver, but several other states have petitioned and are waiting to get an answer. Those states are Nevada (voted Obama in ‘08), New Hampshire (voted Obama ‘08) and Kentucky." Liberals are a disgrace.

President Obama has created the most polarized American public in the history of the country. He continues to make statements describing Republicans, Tea Party followers, and those that do not agree with his policies as enemies, political terrorists, racists, and that these Americans are not supportive to those Americans that are disadvantaged. He continues to cator to our enemies while ignoring our traditional allies. He has raised the national debt by over 4 Trillion dollars in just the last two years and continues to ignore the fiscal crisis that he has helped spend this country into. He is forcing healthcare legislation onto a country that most people do not like or want, and his foreign policies are undermining the ability of this country to deal with terrorism and other worldwide problems. His economic policies are killing our economy and not turning around our unemployment problem. Other then these issues, he is doing a good job.

"Obama's health care law has enraged conservatives who view it as a costly government expansion and intrusion into their lives because it mandates insurance for most Americans."

The people who are actually now able to get insurance are not complaining about this. How many of these people who say it's an "intrusion" already have insurance anyway? I they already have insurance (which they probably do, and it's probably Medicare, why the heck do they care? Because it helps the poor?

why does it seem to me that the republicans have absolutely NO candidate that can beat Obama. The only ones are Huckabee and Romney with Romney having such a slim chance I am thinking Huckabee will win the primary. What this means is that Obama will most likely beat Huckabee. Of course I could be wrong but I don't think so.

On what data or public opinion are you basing your comment? Would you vote for Obama given how much damage he is doing to the country if you are a Republican, Independent, or moderate Democrat? My guess is that you wouldn't regardless of who the Republican candidate is because you know that we néed to repeal Obamacare, defang the EPA, cut the cost of government, and create a business friendly government so that private companies can more easily create badly needed jobs. Obama is doing just the opposite, and must be replaced.

Won't happen. The damage you speak of was inflicted on us by the Bush/Cheney administration including two wars and tax breaks for the wealthiest 2%. There isn't a potential Republican presidential candidate that I would vote for for anything.

'There he goes again!'  Poor Mitt,  he doesn't understand that his party has been hijacked by the Beckastanites who need rabid cries and hyperboles.

I know that you are desperate to put distance between the Obama health insurance reform plan and REAL medical reform in Massachusetts that you signed into law.   But, your bit is just not strong enough.
You've got to call Obama a Kenyan or Communist or something to distract the teabaggers from your legislative past.

Mitt, ole' pal. You have to amp it up.  You've got some real competition from Newtie that will knock your socks off.  He has the entire play book from Rove.

Mitt Romney is very much disliked by many republicans because of what he did in 2008. Many republicans really didn't like McCain very much and didn't think he much of a chance of winning the general election. Romney was the last viable candidate opposing McCain, and he actually had a fairly good chance of winning the primary when he dropped out of the race and handed it to McCain. There were a lot of disappointed republicans when that happened, as they rightfully predicted that McCain simply didn't have what it would take to win the election.

Those same republicans are not about to jump on the Romney band wagon. Aside from the fact that many of them are still angry for him dropping out the 2008 primary, they wonder if he would do the same thing again in 2012 if the primary going gets tough.

Why don't you go to the Kaiser Family Foundation website to educate yourselves about the Affordable Care Act, which is now the law of the land. The majority of Americans, including former Senator Bill Frist, want to give health care reform a chance to see how it works and to use it as a platform upon which to build rather than trying to repeal it.

So the fact the government is giving waivers to groups that cannot be ready in time is a bad thing?

About 2.6 million people are covered by the waivers, representing less than 2 percent of privately insured individuals, according to HHS.

The department also said the number of waivers has been steadily decreasing. HHS approved more than 500 in December, which it attributed to most plan years starting Jan. 1. It then approved 200 waivers in January and 126 in February.

Did you read it or just the headlines and assume it was some disaster? Actually don't answer I dont want to get sucked up in your vortex of ign0rance.

The 126 in February are state waivers that encompass more than 1 plan.
The impact to medicare will cause a 40% decrease in coverage for seniors.
The plan does not reduce costs to individuals and families..it raises them.
The excuse that groups are not ready in time seems to only impact health insurance companies, private and public worker unions. Individuals and families are already seeing a 10-25% increase in costs.

The Deficit for February was a record $233 Billion. In other words..the HCR is a failure since it cannot work in a massive budgetary deficit environment. It is a failure because it does not contain healthcare costs...if anything it causes them to rise. Waivers are just another example (just like special interest breaks for income taxes) of a corrupt and inefficient program, that sounds good, but soaks what's left of the middle class.
