Top 10 Places To Work Your Post-Doc

After a brief rankings slip in 2010, the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research has this year returned to the number one slot in the Scientist's annual list of best American institutions for post-doctoral work.

To compile their lists of top 40 American and top 10 international institutions, the magazine considered 2,881 responses to a survey distributed through the Scientist's website and via e-mail. To participate in the survey, respondents had to identify as non-tenured scientists working at a recognized, noncommercial institution. 76 U.S. institutions and 17 foreign schools, each of which had been mentioned by at least five responders, were considered.

Each contributor was asked to rate their working environment with respect to 38 criteria within 9 categories, including quality of training and mentoring, funding, equity and more. The top schools were those that scored the highest in areas deemed most important by responders.
