Today marks the anniversary of the death of legendary American film director Stanley Kubrick who died March 7, 1999 from natural causes, he was 70.

One of the greatest filmmakers of the 20th century, Kubrick was known for his obsessive nature, dark storylines, dramatic music, and iconic visual style. Kubrick's films are simultaneously beautiful and highly disturbing.

Many of his films are considered cult classics, including A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, Lolita, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Full Metal Jacket, Spartacus and Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. We could go on, but you get the point.

Although Kubrick was nominated for countless awards including several Oscars, Golden Globes and BAFTAs, he only won one Oscar for 2001: A Space Odyssey for best visual effects.
