First Lady Michelle Obama Celebrates International Women's Day, Women's History Month

Obama Clinton Women Courage Awards

DARLENE SUPERVILLE   03/ 8/11 07:59 PM ET  AP

WASHINGTON — Michelle Obama says that while women are breaking barriers and excelling in careers their mothers and grandmothers believed were off-limits, more progress is needed to achieve true equality.

American women still earn less than men and lag in math and science fields, she said Tuesday, while many foreign countries exclude female voices from government decision-making.

Still, the first lady said: "We've come a long way, ladies."

"We as a nation benefit from every girl whose potential is fulfilled, from every woman whose talent is tapped. We benefit as a nation," Mrs. Obama said at a White House reception celebrating women. "We as a nation benefit from their intelligence, from their hard work, from their creativity, from their leadership.

"And that's not just true here in America," she said. "Time and again, we have seen that countries across the globe are more prosperous, they're more peaceful when women are more equal and have the rights and opportunities they deserve."

Mrs. Obama echoed comments earlier in the day by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who implored the Middle Eastern countries of Egypt and Tunisia, which are undergoing a transition from autocracy to democracy, to let women make decisions, too.

"The United States will stand firmly for the proposition that women must be included in whatever process goes forward," said Clinton, who was joined at the event by Mrs. Obama. "No government can succeed if it excludes half of its people from important decisions."

At the White House, Mrs. Obama told her mostly female audience that their presence was a "perfect illustration" of the progress made since International Women's Day was first celebrated 100 years ago.

She said American women are now the majority of college graduates and nearly half the work force. They're leaders in business and serve at the highest levels of government and the military, she said.

"While we've made some important strides, all of you in this room know better than anyone else that this work is far from finished," she said. "We have so, so much more to do."

The events at State and the White House commemorated International Women's Day. The White House event also recognized March as Women's History Month in the U.S.

At the State Department, Clinton also recognized 10 women for efforts ranging from promoting good governance in Cameroon to combating such scourges as sexual harassment in China, domestic abuse in Afghanistan and "honor killings" in Jordan.

Unless you're Egyptian. In that case the muslim brotherhood declares no civil rights for you. Shut up, go home and clean your house.

Some "democracy" movement, huh?

Why did the number of women in Congress drop?
Why do more women live in poverty?
Why do more women still have insufficient health care?
Why is there a Republican bill to cut spending including programs that help women and children disproportionate with breaks secured and protected by these same Republicans for Wall Street, big oil, bankers and the super-rich?

Maybe women and children need the power of lobbyists behind them and it seems Mrs. O, or the Closer, is trying to bring women back to forefront.

Michelle Obama tops poll of US politicians

First Lady Michelle Obama on Monday topped a new poll purporting to show how warmly Americans regard their leaders, beating even her husband President Barack Obama.

Although here in Montana we clearly have some work to do. It appears that Republican legislators seem to feel we are so much chattel - comparing women to cows & property and fighting to take away freedom of choice.

Wow. That's pretty horrendous. Regier should crawl back into the cave he came from, and leave the rest of us to take our society forward.

"Take our society forward" ... interesting considering how Wisconsin's Republicans turned back the clock on labor last night; an action surely to hurt single moms and their children.

Personal greed has become the mantra of Republicans and why so many poor to middle-class, undereducated white women are in their base in this generation is a puzzle to me.

People who have influence in groups that matter get more rights, regardless of their gender. This is the reason you see more people from the same ethnic group in jobs. This is the reason you see people from the same ethnic group in the same office building. They are able to get around the traditional interviewing process, and get jobs directly from the parent companies that import skilled labor. Rights manifest in the form of opportunities hijacked, being part of some group with influence in the hiring process..

I recommend the following two sort articles:

1. Are There Differences between the Brains of Males and Females?
http://www.cerebromente.org.br/n11/mente/eisntein/cerebro-homens.html

2. The New Humanism
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/08/opinion/08brooks.html?_r=1&src=ISMR_HP_LO_MST_FB

Article #2 is by David Brooks, but don’t let that discourage you from reading it. It is a very nice article that summarizes research findings and talks about the importance of: the following traits that are not sufficiently valued in our society:

Attunement: the ability to enter other minds and learn what they have to offer.

Equipoise: the ability to serenely monitor the movements of one’s own mind and correct for biases and shortcomings.

Metis: the ability to see patterns in the world and derive a gist from complex situations.

Sympathy: the ability to fall into a rhythm with those around you and thrive in groups.
Limerence: This isn’t a talent as much as a motivation.

Article #1 summarizes scientific results showing that (statistically) women are stronger in at least three of these important traits than men.

Together, the two articles make it clear that empowerment of women is an essential step toward a more just (and more productive) society.

Yes, women have come a long way. Having to again fight for abortion rights, still not having equal pay after Obama signed the Leddie Ledbetter act or whatever it was, being the first on the list to lose benefits for their children because the "good ole boys" dictators in congress (yes, they're dictators--most of them have been there longer than Gadafi) have decided to repair the economy on the backs of women. Who are we kidding?

You are right, but a question is, "How many women are responsible for all of those things you mention"? How many women voted those folks into office. How many women stayed home instead of going to those polls? How many women in office cast votes against those very things? In my opinion it is those women who are responsible for setting women back a hundred years, for they selfishly support the "good ole boys" network.

For all of you who are overly concerned about who these women married and whether or not they would have been successful without their marriages I ask what difference does it make? I would venture to say that when they married their husbands that had absolutely no idea that either would become the President of The United States of America! Finally, we don’t have a clue as to the sacrifices that these women made in order for their husbands to reach the APEX of their careers. However, anyone with an iota of common sense would know that these women literally ran their households while their spouses were out making the enormous commitment needed to become the President of The United States of America! As such, surely you don’t argue that they have not taken the cards that they were dealt and made the best of them.

What an absurd comment. Do you know anything about our First Lady's background? She graduated from Princeton University in 1985.

"She is also a lawyer and a former Chicago city administrator and community outreach worker. Reared in a blue-collar home on Chicago's South Side, she was an associate at a law firm when she met Obama; he was a summer intern and she was assigned to advise him. She has worked in the offices of Chicago's mayor and its planning commission, headed a career-training program for young adults and directed community affairs for the University of Chicago and its medical center."

When I look at our inspiring First Lady, I am reminded of my grandmother, and my mother. My grandmother was one of the very first Black women to earn a university degree in the State of Kentucky, and my mother, one of the first Black women to earn a masters degree in Education. They were both teachers in a time when teachers were still highly respected. I celebrated them yesterday.
