UPDATE: Ron Schiller, the NPR fundraising executive whose comments criticizing the Tea Party and questioning the network's need for federal funds, has resigned his post effective immediately, the network announced on Tuesday night. Schiller, who announced that he would be leaving NPR for another job last week, had been due to exit his current post on May 6.

Schiller issued this statement:

"While the meeting I participated in turned out to be a ruse, I made statements during the course of the meeting that are counter to NPR's values and also not reflective of my own beliefs. I offer my sincere apology to those I offended. I resigned from NPR, previously effective May 6th, to accept another job. In an effort to put this unfortunate matter behind us, NPR and I have agreed that my resignation is effective today."

ORIGINAL POST:
A top NPR fundraiser was caught harshly criticizing the Tea Party, defending the firing of Juan Williams and saying that NPR would be better off without government funding in a sting operation that caught on tape. (Watch video below.)

The sting was overseen by James O'Keefe, the conservative activist whose previous videos targeting ACORN eventually led to that organization's demise, even though the video was found to be heavily doctored. O'Keefe also hatched a plot to ensnare a CNN reporter on a boat with sex toys last September, and, in May of last year, he plead guilty to breaking into the office of Sen. Mary Landrieu, a Louisiana Democrat.

In the video, Ron Schiller, NPR's senior vice president for fundraising, meets with two members of a fake group that claims to be a Muslim education fund.

Schiller announced last week that he is leaving NPR, and he is due to start a job at the Aspen Institute. He was not involved in editorial content while at NPR. In a statement, NPR said it was "appalled" by Schiller's comments. (Read NPR's full statement below.)

Among other things, Schiller calls the Tea Party "fanatically involved in people's personal lives and very fundemental[ly] Christian—I wouldn't even call it Christian...basically, they believe in white, middle America, gun-toting—it's pretty scary. They're seriously racist, racist people."

He also defends the firing of Juan Williams. "What NPR did I'm very proud of. What NPR stood for is a non-racist, non-bigoted, straightforward telling of the news," he says.

And Schiller further says that it would be better for NPR not to receive funding from the government.

"Very little of our funding comes from the government, but they act as if all our funding comes from the government... it is very clear that in the long run we would be better off without federal funding," he says.

The video released on YouTube runs a little over 11 minutes. O'Keefe also posted the full, two-hour video online.

NPR spokesperson Dana Davis Rehm responded to the video:

The fraudulent organization represented in this video repeatedly pressed us to accept a $5 million check, with no strings attached, which we repeatedly refused to accept.

We are appalled by the comments made by Ron Schiller in the video, which are contrary to what NPR stands for.

Mr. Schiller announced last week that he is leaving NPR for another job.

(Note: this article has been corrected to reflect Ron Schiller's job status. He had originally been called a "former" fundraiser for NPR by the network, but they clarified later on Tuesday that his resignation from his job was effective in May.)

Interesting that Glenn Beck's Blaze took the time to view the entire 2 hours plus of the video and came up with some interesting discrepancies.....

This guy spoke the truth, and NPR's funding is being threatened. There is no"win" for anyone here. It only exasperates the situation we currently have--- which only chooses to expose lack of "fairness" (making sure both political sides are equally represented) in our media instead of measuring the Truth factor or real objectivity in our politics today.
Essentially, the "fairness" in our media blocks us from recognizing, pursuing Truth, and therefore solving problems in our country.
And O'Keefe is NO hero at all but only an elevated prankster whose tactics are comprised of using deception and manipulation to damage or threaten a political party.

So now people have to resign for telling the truth? I would have made them fire me. F them. The Tea Party IS a bunch of racists. They are the dumbest group of individuals on the planet.

In a private conversation a man expressed his opinion.

Government funding should make no difference to the opinion of any news company, but perhaps makes a difference to the quality of output.

Whether or not something is Government funded should make no difference to the opinion/stance of any news company.

Providing unbiased coverage of ANYTHING is impossible - all news is angle and opinion. The sooner the media/people realise that the better. At least if we made it obvious it was all opinion the public could make their own minds up on subjects rather than being insidiously influenced.

Sadly your version of coverage is what gives blowhards like Beck, Hannity and Kelly the idea that giving their opinion is the same as reporting news.

You want to see a real news broadcast? Watch the NBC Nightly News. Brian Williams does not talk about or allude to his personal political preferences. He reports the news without snide remarks. Katie Couric's anchoring of the CBS Evening News is the same. Tom Brokaw, Charlie Gibson, Walter Cronkite, Peter Jennings - they all reported the news the way it's supposed to be reported. As is, and as impartial as it can get. Opinions were saved for editorial segments - and those were rare.

Now before someone jumps up and says Brian Williams shows bias and so does Katie - You need to give real examples, because whenever this kind of thing has been brought up on HuffPo, people made these claims, yet were strangely quiet when asked to back up their assertions with facts.

Perhaps it is sad. Perhaps not? Students are taught to evaluate all sources before making judgements, perhaps that is what readers of news should do also. Look at multiple views from multiple sources and then form a judgement. Your words are wise so I assume this would be your way of approaching information, no matter how trusted the source.

Unfortunately for this conversation I do not watch much US news - I am Australian. I choose SBS and ABC in Australia for my news coverage as it is the most straight forward and least full of BS. But I still acknowledge that they can never possibly be unbiased. All published information is biased in some way and it is our duty as consumers to question everything.

That being said, as consumers we will make judgements on the source and if we approve, the source itself helps qualify the information. As you say, you have go-to sources of information, and likewise, I have mine. Yet recently, during a natural disaster in my country the best "news" came from Facebook - a source I'd generally question for its validity of information.

Main point: NO BLIND ACCEPTANCE OF TRUTH under any circumstances.

PS: I've been a fan of NPR and PBS for over thirty years and they are about as unbiased as they come. The reason you neocons hate them so much is that they don't push your brand, or any brand for that matter----- Because they are 'National Public' and 'Public Broadcasting' for obvious ethical reasons they can't and won't---while going above and beyond to insure unbiased coverage!
In addition, they don't play to advertisers or the ratings which I find admirable.
As regards Ron Schiller, he's certainly entitled to his private opinions, yet in his capacity as a fundraiser and while on the stump for NPR he ought to have used more discretion.
On the other hand, NPR's unfortunate CEO had zero control over a lone employee running his mouth in the field and ought not to have been canned; especially in light of the fact he was leaving anyway but then, that’s just another example of NPR going above and beyond.

So it's not okay for NPR execs to bash the Tea Party, yet it's okay for Faux News to donate and praise Republicans? And it's okay for Roger Ailes to call NPR Nazis and not get fired for it? Am I missing something here?
02:21 PM on 03/10/2011
Neither are ok in my book. The issue is that NPR receives gov't funding. I like NPR, but I have no illusions about its liberal slant. So, I can understand how conservatives are tired of the arrangement.

Let's check NewsCorps financials - I'm sure they get a lot more from the taxpayers than NPRs pittance.

Schiller bashing the Tea Party is not a big deal. We (the Tea Party) always knew NPR is biased. Where we are now has bipartisan agreement. NPR needs to get off the government dole and generate its own funding. If Lib politicians have skin in the game that outweighs what Conservatives and NPR's own staff agree is the best course of action, they should lay it all out there. Otherwise, let NPR funding dry up naturally.

Conservatives AGREE with the former NPR chief fundraiser. NPR would definitely be better off without federal funding. I can't see why anyone is mad about this.

Last time I looked, a person could become snowblind from looking at all the pasty white faces on Faux News. Poor Williams, he's the victim - much like Palin always seems to be.
