53 Of Our Favorite Female Comedians (PHOTOS)

In honor of International Women's Day and the upcoming Women In Comedy Festival in Boston, we wanted to put together a list of some of our favorite female comedians. The only problem is we ran out of time to add the couple hundred more we wanted to include. So, we admit that this list is by no means complete. Nevertheless, we hope it puts a little bit of a damper on the notion that funny women are few and far between. As you click through, you'll see some faces you recognize as well as, possibly, a lot that you don't. But all are worthy of your immediate attention. And if there's someone you think we absolutely should have included, let us know in the comments.

There really isn't such a thing as a truly funny female comedian. Most have some funny moments and others, like Behar, Silverman and Cho, are never funny.

In my very humble 47 years as a guest on this planet, one thing has become quite evident: Margaret Cho has got to be the most unfunny comic I've seen in that very short span of time. Our country's politicians are funnier than her.........

Sometimes female comedians have to compensate since most humor from male comedians is directed towards woman and exaggerated observations about their interaction with them or lack of. I think what truly makes a successful female comedian is them not being referred to as a "funny female comedian," but just a funny person in general.

I have mixed feelings on Kathy Griffin. Yes, she's a very funny person, but I have a hard time calling her a 'comedian.' To me, she's a storyteller - a very funny and talented one - as I have never once seen her perform and actually tell jokes, she just tells stories of her interactions with/personal observations of celebrities. I sort of put her and Chelsea Handler in the same boat - if they weren't famous, they wouldn't be funny, because they have no true original material, they rely on have 'behind the scenes' stories.

I would definitely add Marga Gomez. She is one of those San Francisco gems who is brilliant but has never broken into the mainstream possibly because she is a Latina Lesbian and people are stupidly prejudiced.
