That's right, that NEW iPhone you just bought will be outdated in about 8 months.. that is Apples true market strategy, To Make all the "gotta have the newest and greatest Apple gadgets NOW" people keep spending their money every Year. It is a solid plan cause it works.

In what sense will the iPhone 5 make the iPhone 4 "outdated"? When car companies release new models every year, does that make the previous year's models outdated? Would you prefer technology companies to sit on technology for two, three, four years? It's not just a matter of strategy, it's a matter of technological reality, and what designers have managed to create since the last model was released.

Pro Tip- a newer, faster iPhone will be released every June.

So the closer in the year you get to June, the smarter it is to wait.

Apple iPhone replace their phones, on average every 14 months, much faster than other smartphone brands and even moreso than dumbphones.  That figure is very important both to Apple's revenue stream and their market share numbers.  If suddenly iPhone users started replacing their phones every 20 or 24 months Apple's revenue stream would take a big hit.

So rest absolutely assured.  There will be an iPhone 5 announced one year after the iPhone4 and it will have some feature that will make iPhone 4 users feel inferior.  So yes, it will have the A5 processor.  And it will have a redesigned case because how else are you going to make it obvious to your friends at the table that you have the best and they have the second best?

"Planned obsolescence" has been around for a long time, but Apple seem to have mastered it.

Their strategy of making technology into a fashion accessory is quite profitable.

Apple's yearly release of new versions of the iPhone, with significant improvements worth having, is less frequent than many manufacturers of other phones. If many iPhone users choose to upgrade when those significantly improved iPhone models finally come out, I see no reason to automatically disparage their decision.

At the time Apple designed the iPhone 4, they didn't have the dual core A5 chip ready for use in the iPhone, and/or its support circuitry (particularly to allow the dual A5 to run with a battery smaller than that in the iPad 2). That's why it's being put into the iPhone 5, one year later. Technology advances in the course of a year. The dual core A5 is important to maintain speed with ever-increasingly processor-intensive apps, video, etc., so it's not merely something to make iPhone 4 users jealous for no real reason.

It's normal for significantly improved versions of any product to come with different packaging, enclosure, etc.

Other manufacturers also come out with new models all the time.  Keeping pace with technology is normal.

What tends to make Apple different (not bad, different) is.

The huge speculation and hype that they build around their product announcements.

The way in which the new iWhatever is positioned specifically as a replacement for the prior version iWhatever.

Both are specifically intended to get users to trade in their devices faster.

The idea behind singularity is currently being demonstrated by the iPad 2, bigger faster lighter stronger. Twice the speed, twice the computing -- leveraging each successive incarnation on the previous roll out, everything paving the way for iPad 8, where you and the ipad are one, one triple 3D core holideck. As an owner of iPad 1 (wow, there was such a thing, pops?) I was bedazzled by the device and quickly it took over a place I didn't know I had for a device such as this -- an ingestor and distributor of media files and content. That the new one is a caddie compared to a buick is besides the point. Finer, faster, cooler, I wanna have it out of the gate, just because it's fun to see technology keep racing to keep up with how I think. Yet someday soon in ipad 8 land, man and machine may one day be one and then there'll be no more rating these devices because your data will be a device.

How is this a revamp?

Its a new phone with a new chip. Nothing groundbreaking there. Its a dual core chip just like lots of other new phones.

What would really be great is if an iphone had the ability to work on either CDMA OR GSM out of the box. So folks could easily switch providers and roam the globe.

Whatever upgrades there are, for me, the question is whether they'll have the iPhone 5 simultaneously for both their Verizon and AT&T customers or whether the 5 will only be on AT&T for now since they just introduced the 4 to Verizon.

If Apple makes an iPhone5 available on Verizon this summer, people will bitch.
If they don't, people will bitch.

They aren't going to use the same processor from the iphone 4 a year later on the iphone 5?  But why?  That doesn't make any sense... I'm confused.

New versions of electronic products almost ALWAYS have updated components, including "CPU", which is what the A5 processor is.  This isn't news, it's viral marketing.  (And are people so unfamiliar with technology that they need to be patronized or condescended to with "chip"?)

Another good reason to ignore the frantic phone calls and E-Mails from Verizon for me to "BUY AN IPHONE 4 AND RENEW YOUR SERVICE CONTRACT NOW!"
