Kate Middleton's Weight Becomes Talked-About Topic

GREGORY KATZ   03/09/11 09:50 AM ET  AP

LONDON — How thin is too thin? Not even Kate Middleton has escaped the thorny debate.

The willowy princess-to-be's appearance and reported comments during a visit to Northern Ireland sparked some concerns Wednesday about whether she's losing too much weight ahead of the April 29 royal wedding. The subject even became a topic on Twitter.

In front-page newspaper photographs, Middleton appears to be in good health if slightly slimmer than usual, but reporters heard many in the Belfast crowd of well-wishers on Tuesday making comments that she looked a bit gaunt.

One woman, Heather Lindsay, told Middleton "not to lose any more weight," and said Middleton remarked that it was all part of the wedding plan.

Palace officials Wednesday refused to say whether Prince William's fiancee is trying to lose a few pounds before the big day. They also declined to specify her height, weight or to comment on her words in Northern Ireland.

"It was an off-the-cuff comment," said a press aide to Prince Charles who asked not to be identified because of palace protocol. "It's a hugely private matter."

Prince Charles' press aides have been protective of Middleton's privacy since the engagement was announced in November. Middleton was active in many sports during her university days and her weight hasn't seemed to have fluctuated much since then.

Even if Middleton is not dieting, it would not be uncommon or worrying for her to lose several pounds in the weeks before the wedding simply because of nerves, said Mark Niemierko, a top London wedding planner who has seen clients lose weight unexpectedly in the final days before the ceremony.

"Even those brides who don't plan to lose weight lose weight," he said. "This is the one day they will be the absolute center of attention, and these are pictures they'll have forever, so they want to be in good form. The same is true for the groom."

He said Middleton is naturally tall and skinny – like her sister, maid of honor Pippa Middleton – but does not seem dangerously slim.

"I think she looks perfect, but everyone has issues about their bodies and I'm sure she just wants to be very toned," he said.

On Twitter, a handful of people posted comments about Middleton's weight on Wednesday. One said she shouldn't lose any more weight and should serve as a healthy role model to young girls.

Nutritionists who deal with eating disorders – like the bulimia that plagued William's mother, the late Princess Diana – say it is usually fine for prospective brides to diet before their weddings as long as they don't try to lose too much weight, which can create an unhealthy "yo-yo effect" when the pounds are put back on before the honeymoon is over.

But nutritionist Amanda Hamilton said Middleton should be careful.

"She's already slim enough so I would have concerns over that," Hamilton said. "Anyone would look at her picture and ask why does she have to lose weight. She looks fantastic. She's on the very slim end of what would be considered healthy. She's not in the danger zone, I don't think ... but she doesn't have any weight to lose."

I wonder why folk can't just focus on the happy occasion and admit she is a lovely young woman.

It's better to be a bit underweight, than a bit overweight. I'm sure Kate will look fantastic in her wedding dress, and I hope we will all like THE dress!

well, actually it worse to be underweight, health-wise.

some posted below that Kate's weight is a mere 55 or 60. She needs to eat a sandwich or get off the metric system.

How on earth would getting "off the metric system" change her weight? I don't follow.

The first British paper to run the story was The Daily Mirror, which is the equivalent to the US National Enquire, only worse.

Kate's weight is no one's business but her own. And everyone needs to back off and not start on her like they did with Diana. Hasn't anything been learned? Remember Diana saying that she was supposed to be in the loo throwing up. Gutsy woman and I think Kate will do what she wants and should. She's just fine the way she is.

Get off the metric system? Why? What difference would it make?

The thing about Britain's royal family, everyone treats the younger royals as if they were their own son/daughter/neice/granddaughter, etc., and feels some sort of "ownership," that just comes with the territory. So instead of just having one mother in law and a few old aunts to make these catty, noisy, and personal remarks, Kate has a whole country of them aiming at her. To maintain sanity she'll need lots of help ignoring that. I think in all these years of dating William she's had plenty of opportunity to see if she can handle it, a chance her fiance's mom never had. I think she can handle it, she doesn't seem to take herself too seriously, plus she and William have strong friends in common, so... Best of luck to them both.

If the royal family stopped their PR spin and trying to make her into a model - then all the comments would stop - there is no natural interest in her or William - most people polled couldn't care less.

hmmm, they must be polling the wrong people. 600K to a million people will descend on London for the big day, and a billion or more will watch on TV. But right, no one is really interested.

True. I don't even admire them. Kate kind of bugs me because we have all of this forced admiration thrust on us, and she's really done nothing to deserve it. She's just marrying her college boyfriend. In fact, her pursuit of him seems more like her career over the past eight years than her time at Jigsaw and Party Pieces. Kate just seems to be all over my style section on the HP and all over my favorite British light reading outlets as well.

Shes not a princess to be   - shes a normal woman marrying a normal man.

Also if the royal family stopped their PR spin and trying to make her into a fashion model she just doesn't have that "it" factor - she could wear clothes that are comfy but now instead she now has to try to fit into "model" sizes.

They are trying to dress mutton up as a lamb - shes attractive but in a normal way and naturally shes even a bit chunky - nothing wrong with that - shes a normal woman.

A lot of people in Britain call her mutton dressed up as lamb as well. I think she's an attractive woman who dresses a bit old for her age and looks a bit old for her age if you see her without airbrushing. But, then again, so is he. William dresses like an engineer in his off time. Khakis or jeans and a polo shirt and sensible shoes. So, maybe, they go together. I wouldn't imagine him with a very trendy or fashion forward woman given how he looks. Even though, that would make it a lot more interesting for us in the run-up to their wedding.

Wait... some reporter actually called the Palace and asked her height and weight? For reals? It's one thing to write an article that has absolutely no point, it's another thing entirely to waste time and actually attempt to research it.

And if she dared to not appear "too thin," the press
would attack her and call her the "porky princess."
Poor girl simply can't win.

Don't they have an obesity epidemic in England? Their perspective on weight might be a little skewed.

I'm a naturally thin person and it's very difficult for people like me to maintain their weight particularly during times of high stress. She will be fine when the wedding is over and she can relax. Unfortunately, our society, which is generally a tad overweight, equates being thin with being sick, which is not true. She is a lovely young woman and I wish her much happiness.
P. S. The fact that someone said anything to her about her weight is sad. Would anyone walk up to an overweight person and ask why they've gotten so heavy?

Yes, they would. That's the primary job of old aunts and mothers-in-law.

My mom made that her job when I was in grad school. Sometimes, before she even said hello, she would ask me if I had gained weight. I would reply, "Well, hello to you too mom. Haven't seen you in a long time. How are you?" Eventually, she got the hint and stopped.

i guess i haven't seen recent pictures, but she looks very healthy and happy to me. Probably just gossip media doing what they do best....if she'd gained weight, there would be speculation of a pregnancy, or a "bump" as I think they call it....moving along.
04:05 PM on 03/11/2011
Everyone should leave the woman alone. She is probably a ball of nerves inside her wonderfully composed outward appearance. I bet that is contributing to her weight loss. She appears to be a very level headed person. I am thinking she will be very successful in her marriage and life in general.
