Charles Barkley To Billy Packer: 'Stop Being A Jackass' (VIDEO)

UPDATE: Billy Packer responded to Charles Barkley's rant on Thursday night. Appearing on 790 The Zone with Mayhem in the A.M., Packer challenged Barkley to a debate about intercollegiate athletics and college basketball.

Former CBS broadcaster Billy Packer criticized the new television contract for the NCAA men's basketball tournament three weeks ago, claiming that ESPN would do a better job covering the tournament than Turner Sports.

Charles Barkley fired back at Packer on Thursday night during halftime of the game between the Los Angeles Lakers and Miami Heat.

"Hey Billy Packer, you might be right. We might not be very good and know all the players on all the teams in college basketball," Barkley said. "I don't know any players on Wofford or UNC Asheville. You are absolutely right. But stop being a jackass."

Barkley went on to tell Packer to enjoy March Madness "with Greg Gumbel, Clark Kellogg, Jim Nantz and all of us [at Turner], and shut the hell up."

Packer called 34 consecutive Final Fours on CBS before leaving the network in 2008.

Billy Packer has long been one of those college basketball broadcasters with an appeal that's a total mystery to me, like Dick Vitale. I'm not surprised Sir Charles was sick of him, having had to listen to him since his own college days.

Billy the Bore.

ESPN is biased and would only talk about kentucky and uconn the entire time. i would rather watch the viacom(cbs)/turner(all the cable channels) Cover it than espn because hearing dick vitale through all of those games would make me cry for the rest of my life. plus, like i said, if you arent kentucky or uconn, you wont get love from ESPN.

Billy Packer was a bore all of the years he announced the tourney. All he did was second guess everything a coach did wrong, as if he ever achieved anything as a coach. Classic second guesser on all facets of the game. Glad he's gone. Never like his constant whining.

Well put, Chuck.
Perhaps you could lead by example.

Packer seems to have some animosity toward his former employer ESPN. CBS / Turner made the winning bid, period. And there be more games than ever available on regular cable. Of course I hated the old CBS,  "We'll tell you what to watch and we might give you bonus coverage", system.
ESPN is doing what they wanted to do. They didn't match the CBS bid.
ESPN now owns the bowl games,  and the SEC except the  CBS Game of the Week.

Thank God it is not on ESPN. Best news I have heard. ESPN3 on the web is awful. They finally allowed TWC to connect to ESPN3. ESPN3 is jerky at times. Next you will need fingerprints, an iris scan and your first born to watch anything on that site.

Packer will never be the "Worst Announcer Ever" as Brent Musberger lays claim to that title without debate. However, Packer's career certainly demands that he be included in the discussion.

Whats so bad about Musberger? His college football coverage is excellent IMO.

John Miller/Joe Morgan/Dick Vitale get nominations from me, as well as those legendary homer whitesox announcers.
