How To Stop Junk Mail

Stop Junkmail

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 03/11/11 09:05 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:35 PM ET

Over 100 billion pieces of unsolicited mail are stuffed into U.S. mailboxes each year. Not only is this junk mail considered by many to be simply annoying, it is also extremely wasteful. Most of the 100 billion pieces of paper are thrown away, contributing greatly to this country’s waste levels. The AFP reports that at least one billion dollars is spent per year on mail disposal.

Some cities have taken notice and plan to fight the waste. This week, cities including Chicago, Berkley (CA), and Ithaca (NY) have begun a program targeting unsolicited junk mail. A mail preference service gives residents the ability to stop receiving junk mail. Designed by Catalog Choice, residents can sign up for the program on a local website.

According to GreenBiz, cities pay roughly $10/household on collection and disposal costs -- the savings become significant when looking at cities like Chicago, a region that contains over one million households.

The cities will not only save money, but they will also drastically cut down on waste and improve the environment. According to Suzanne Malec-McKenna, Commissioner of Chicago's Department of Environment, “We've identified waste reduction as a crucial strategy to meet the goals of our Chicago Climate Action Plan.”

This is not the first initiative taken to cut down on unsolicited mail in cities. Last month, San Francisco proposed a ban on unsolicited Yellow Pages phone books. Nearly one million books are distributed to San Francisco alone each year, wasting over five million pounds of paper. Estimates show that local governments spend $54 million to dispose of the phone books, and thus San Francisco came up with their cost-cutting, waste prevention plan.

While only a few cities have adopted the mail preference service, Catalog Choice still offers a way for other people to opt out of some junk mail. Their website lets recipients control the unsolicited mail that they receive by entering a zipcode and selecting to leave certain mailings.

Beyond Catalog Choice, there are other proactive measures that mail recipients can take to cut down on their junk mail. Catalogs often offer a phone number or web link where a recipient can choose to remove himself from their mailing list. People can also sometimes contact coupon and credit card companies directly, requesting to have their name removed from lists.

TreeHugger suggests using websites like Direct Marketing Association to fight junk mail. Other websites allow you to opt out of specific mailings -- for example, recipients can request to not receive ValPak coupons or credit offers.

If the mail preference service works, this opt-out plan may have a bright future for many more cities. As Catalog Choice’s Chuck Teller explains to AFP, the service is “win-win” for both consumers who don’t want junk mail, and cities who want to save money. It seems the only ones losing are the junk-mail solicitors.

This is the way to STOP 'JUNK MAIL':

Send a letter or postcard with your signature to the following address. Within app. one to three months your junk mail WILL drop off. You may lose catalogs you do desire - there's always the internet to continue YOUR interests.

What is most annoying is this UNWELCOME mail comes from the BANKS. If they managed as they should have they would NOT be in such trouble!
We are being manipulated to adopt to conducting business through a computer If you have one OR IF you decide to STILL use one. With ALL the advertisements NOW in the place of TRUE informational/educational SEARCH results - many of us have significantly reduced the use of a computer.
The Government preaches to be environmentally responsible YET the Financial institution's are 'destroying' trees like crazy sending out CREDIT enticements in the tens of millions. My Home gets app. 16 per week!!!

Kenz300 - I have immediately adopted your idea! And 'YES' rates for them needs to be raised.
You get 3 VS catalogs because you probably have orders in 3 different names. Even a slight difference WILL appear, in a computer, to be 3 different potential customers.

Send the junk mail back to the sender in their return postage paid envelope. If enough people did this they might get the idea since they will have to pay for the postage. When it begins to cost them money they will figure out you do not want it.

Yes! That is exactly what I do. It was a suggestion that Andy Rooney made about 10 years ago on 60 Minutes. Now I actually take pleasure in receiving junk mail that has a postage paid return envelope -- especially from banks and credit card companies. It seems to have slowed things somewhat, but when it doesn't, I just send everything back in a tightly packed, scotch taped shut, overstuffed envelope -- after writing No Thank you large letters and scribbling through any pertinent info on applications.

How about the Post Office Quadruple the rate for junk mail. They could raise revenue, and cut out the waste at the same time.

Credit card companies will NOT remove your name, citing that they are still allowed to send you certain types of mailings that are not restricted even under anything you use to get your name off of mailing lists. I don't even know why this is allowed, and maybe there should be a class action suit for harassment.

I signed up for this about 3 years ago and it didn't work. I send their junk back to them with a note telling them I don't want to be on their mailing list and that if they keep sending their trash I will continue returning it in their envelopes. They have to pay the postage.

Called a couple of credit card companies and asked to be taken off their mailing list and they wouldn't because they said I was a past customer (which I wasn't). They checked it out and discovered I wasn't a past customer, but had no idea how to remove my name.

Republicans will not vote to increase rates just for junk mail - their corporate handlers don't want to do that. Too bad. This would save trees, reduce waste, and be respectful of nature - all things outside Republican perceptions!

An increase in bulk mail rates is an excellent idea.

Cutting out Saturday business altogether makes sense; no delivery, no offices open. Those needed to sort and ship out the mail that's already in the system would still work weekends.

Both ideas would be money-saving.

Yes, but can I get Victoria's Secret to stop sending me catalogs. You order one thing from them once in a while and they send you three catalogs a week for life! They are one of the worst offenders.

If you use OE...click message; create rule from message; #3, click the address; a box will come up...select people. Type just the email address and click okay. The addy will show up at #3. At #2, scroll down to "don't download from server" and click okay. That will be the end of anything coming under that particular email address. Even if they use a foreign name with that address, it won't come through.

This plan reminds me of the Do-Not-Call registry where individuals who no longer want to receive unwanted telemarketing calls can register their telephone number to the registry and then the list is provided to telemarketers who are then prohibited from calling those numbers.

In theory, the Do-Not-Call registry and the mail preference service to stop delivering junk mail is a good idea, but the procedure seems to be backwards. I'm guessing that if given the choice, an overwhelming number of people would prefer not receiving telemarketing calls and junk mail, but only a small fraction of those people will go through the procedures of stopping the unwanted calls and junk mail.

If the city, state, and federal government want to seriously put a halt to the telemarketing calls and the delivery of junk mail, they should reverse the process and devise a Call Me Registry and a Deliver Junk Mail to Me Registry. This method would automatically end telemarketing calls and the delivery of junk mail entirely for everyone. Then, those who actually want to receive telemarketing calls and/or junk mail would be required to register.

I went as far as contacting 3 credit reporting agencies. Filled out the firms, etc. to get off the lists. Didn't work.

I have used Catalog Choice a number of times, however, often the catalogs keep coming.
09:49 AM on 03/13/2011
If they keep coming, it is the Company not Catalog Choice. Use your Catalog Choice account to file a complaint withe the Company. If the complaint is not resolved in 30 days, we will send it to the FTC.

It is a All this goes in the name of promotion of individual or group businesses. One man's bread is another man's junk. How to put an end to a practice which some think is the struggle for survival?. But the problem is sure menacing.

It is ridiculous that a person is forced to opt OUT of so many things. If you can make a law regarding such things it should be that . . . YOU MUST OPT IN !!

Capitol One sent me more junk than anyone. Several per week usually.

I started sending back the "postage paid" return envelopes, stuffed to bursting with my other junk mail, old cd's, trash, etc.

After awhile, they got the hint. And for several years I received nothing from them.

Just got two mailings from them last week. Looks like we're at it again.
