Scott Renfroe: Mandating Recess Time Could Lead To 'The Feminization Of Our Boys'

A bill that would mandate a minimum amount of recess time at Colorado elementary schools came one step closer to becoming law on Friday, but not before one lawmaker raised a bizarre objection.

The Denver Post reports that Republican Senator Scott Renfroe of Greeley voted against the bill, which which would require 30 minutes of recess time each day, on the grounds that regimented physical activity could lead to "the feminization of our boys."

The bill nonetheless passed its first reading in the Senate with bipartisan support.

Proponents of the bill argued that the legislation was necessary to help alleviate the state's problem with child obesity. A recent study showed that Colorado's childhood obesity rate is rising faster than any other state, although the rate is still the lowest in the country.

HB 1069 will now face another, more formal vote in the Senate before being sent to the Governor.
