P.J. Crowley Resigns As State Department Spokesman

Pj Crowley Resigning

First Posted: 03/13/11 03:35 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:40 PM ET

P.J. Crowley resigned as spokesman for the State Department Sunday. According to CNN, Crowley came under pressure from the Obama administration to step down in the wake of making controversial comments about the Pentagon's treatment of Army private Bradley Manning, who is currently detained over suspicion he was complicit in leaking classified government documents to WikiLeaks.

"It is with regret that I have accepted the resignation of Philip J. Crowley as assistant secretary of state for public affairs," said Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in a statement Sunday. "P.J. has served our nation with distinction for more than three decades, in uniform and as a civilian. His service to country is motivated by a deep devotion to public policy and public diplomacy, and I wish him the very best."

Crowley issued a statement of his own on his departure Sunday.

“The unauthorized disclosure of classified information is a serious crime under U.S. law,” he said. “My recent comments regarding the conditions of the pre-trial detention of Private First Class Bradley Manning were intended to highlight the broader, even strategic impact of discreet actions undertaken by national security agencies every day and their impact on our global standing and leadership,” Crowley said. “The exercise of power in today’s challenging times and relentless media environment must be prudent and consistent with our laws and values.”

Blogger Philippa Thomas relayed what Crowley had to say about the matter to a small audience at M.I.T. last week. He characterized the way in which the Pentagon has handled Manning's detainment as "ridiculous and counterproductive and stupid." He also said, "None the less Bradley Manning is in the right place."

Shortly after the remarks came to light, Crowley confirmed to Foreign Policy's Josh Rogin that the quotes accurately reflected what he had said.

Last Friday, President Barack Obama shared a different take on the treatment of Manning, whose civilian lawyer "has said his client's clothing is being taken each night because of sarcastic comments he had made about using underwear to commit suicide." The AP reported last week:

Obama said Friday that he had asked and the Pentagon assured him that Manning's confinement was appropriate. He declined to be more specific. Obama spoke at a White House news conference.

Crowley's resignation Sunday was sudden. As Michael van Poppel at BNO News noted on Twitter after the story broke, "Crowley released a statement on Yemen just 2 hours ago. Seems really abrupt."

As Mike Allen reported in last Friday's Politico Playbook, however, the relationship between Crowley and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has been strained:

Crowley, a respected NSC spokesman under President Clinton, has never clicked with Secretary Clinton: He doesn't travel with the Secretary, which is crippling and unusual for someone in his post. His doom was sealed early this year when Mike Hammer, who had been the NSC spokesman, was reassigned to State. Technically, Hammer is Crowley's deputy. But everyone knows he is his likely replacement.

Clinton confirmed Sunday that Hammer will take over as acting spokesman for the time being.

Remember, this is Washington that we are talking about. It is fairly well-known that Crowley has been on his way out for some time. This little event has been brought to you by Spinmatsters Deluxe. Crowley's replacement has been in place and ready to take over for a while.

Mr Crowley,

Thank you for your courage, and now your sacrifice, by standing up for what is right.

The Obama Administration is apparently treating Manning WORSE than NIXON treated
Ellsberg. Not only stupid (it is stupid of course), I'm amazed the behavior against Manning is
even LEGAL. This appears to trash any presumption of the rule of law...

1. Habeus?
2. Representaion?
3. Charged with?
4. Speedy trial?
5. Conditions?
6. Health Care?
7. Fundamental morality?

As a lifelong anti-war Democrat, I think the Dems have turned into the pro-war
party. They have NOT ended Iraq, they have tripled Afghnistan, they have apparently
launched paramilitary operations into Pakistan, Iran, Somalia, Yemen, and probably Libya.
One wonders about Tunesia, Algeria, and now Bahrain (with the Saudi invasion and occupation).

So the Wikileaks docs begin to unravel the immorality of American policy in the region and the Obama Administration seems to have gone ballistic and is venting against Manning and apparently Julian Assange as well. Manning and Assange are only providing the mirror through which they view their own actions. I guess that COULD be pretty disconcerting stripped of all the propaganda wrappers.

Again thanks. Truth to power...even when the bad guys turn out to be Democrats.

You are right, but let's not allow the Obama administration and a weak Democratic Congress to re-define what it means to be Democrat. They have abandoned the party! The party has not abandoned us!

Ely.

I hope you'e right. The people of Wisconsin give me hope...but when Haley Barbour is gonna be the anti-war candidate I get pretty depressed.

This guy, Mr PJ Bland, is a gd martyr. I cannot believe the poor PR savvy of the White House! Obama needs to bring the whole political spectrum around to him, and instead he is alienating everyone. (Probably not BHO, I realize: slapdash hamhanded judgement on the part of the Secy of State, yes.) Think of what laurels Obama would get if he stood fast and defended Crowley!

Thank you , P. J., for your military service, and thank you for calling this atrocity for what it is. Now, please, in your exit interview, call these hardliners in the Obama administration to task for their prosecution of Manning and Solange. They lied and obfuscated. Not these two.

My apology, somsoc. Wow, I didn't even realize my mistake. Thanks for correcting me.

I'm going to do some research on what kind of weather changes/patterns we can expect to experience and when, post earth's axis moving 4 degrees due to such a powerful quake. Again, sorry about mistake.

Be prepared for an also very serious quake in west coast of US. Read the article @ realnewsreporter.com. Candid, truthful articles sans the media/government spinners.

So much for that hopey-change we can believe in---huh?! Someone who speaks the truth is muzzled while the lies continue to spread, the facts hidden, and the torture continues.
Time for a third party with no ties to this type of leadership . We're teetering on demise as it is.

Apparently freedom of speech and speaking your mind is an offense that forces you to resign at the state department, but stealing credit card numbers isn't.

As a hired speaker, he does not express an opinion different than his employer and keep his job. His job is to say whathis employer wants him to say. He should have quit before he said it. A tobacco company spokesman will be fired if he gives an opinion different than the company's on tobacco. No different for a government spokesperson.

This is nitpicking. If the employer is engaged in action that is illegal or grossly unethical, ethical employees typically exercise a form of voice (protesting within the organization) first. If this does not work, it can be followed by an action that involves disloyalty, such as the leak. It's a very high standard to demand exit or resignation and disclosure first. The former strategy, the leak, requires the employer to take action of some kind to silence the employee, such as firing them or forcing them to resign. The latter strategy brings the most attention and puts the worst possible light on the employer.

I don't blame Obama for causing what he inherited from the real f@c¡ist regime that preceeded him; however, the fact that he has continued the farce leads me to believe more than ever that there are powers at work in the shadows much greater than any one person or administration . . . yeah!  pretty scary.

I agree - a good man ----and clearly not the kind of man this adminsitration wants on board --for all those out there who don't see the writing on the wall---Obama wants a China-like authority --and if you don't toe the line....

Obama once again proves himself a facist...

If we want to preserveany of our liberty which is eroding quickly under Obama and his globalists, we need to seek out men with honor like Crowley and fill our govt with them. President Crowly???

Please stop throwing around the word fascist, Obama is clearly not a fascist and fascist is not synonymous with evil as you intend us to take it. I put my trust in none of these figure head presidents and until we as country start thinking along those lines we will have more of the same...Democrat, Republican, Tea Bagger, Independent, doesn't matter there is still only one master (profits).

Kudos to a patriotic American who cares more about human rights than his government job. He did a masterful job of resigning, as he knew fulll well that his comments would would put the abusive treatment of a fellow citizen on the front page at the cost of his job. He even got a direct response from his boss, do-nothing Obama. Please run for elected office, Mr Crowley. You have earned the respect and vote of this fellow veteran.
