Wisconsin Protesters Say Next Fight At The Polls

Wisconsin Protests 2012

TODD RICHMOND   03/13/11 12:48 AM ET   AP

MADISON, Wis. — Clogging the Wisconsin Capitol grounds and screaming angry chants, tens of thousands of undaunted pro-labor protesters descended on Madison again Saturday and vowed to focus on future elections now that contentious cuts to public worker union rights have become law.

Protests have rocked the Capitol almost every day since Gov. Scott Walker proposed taking nearly all collective bargaining rights away from public workers, but the largest came a day after the governor signed the measure into law. Madison Police estimated the crowd at 85,000 to 100,000 people – along with 50 tractors and one donkey – by late afternoon. No one was arrested.

Speakers delivered angry diatribes while the crowd carried signs comparing Walker to dictators and yelled thunderous chants of "this is what democracy looks like."

"This is so not the end," said protester Judy Gump, a 45-year-old English teacher at Madison Memorial High School. "This is what makes people more determined and makes them dig in."

Walker's signature on the measure capped a week of political maneuvering to end a bitter, month-long standoff that began when the state's 14 Democratic senators fled to Illinois in an ultimately futile attempt to block the legislation.

Throngs of protesters gathered Saturday outside a convention center where senators made their first public appearances in Madison since ending their self-imposed exile. Demonstrators treated the lawmakers like rock stars, yelling "Fab 14, our heroes!" and giddily snapping pictures.

All 14 Democrats later marched around the Capitol, trading chants of "thank you" with protesters who ringed the sidewalks. When the senators made their way to a stage, they promised to shift their energies toward recall drives already under way against eight of their GOP colleagues.

"Now ... we trade in our rally signs for clipboards and we take to the streets to recall the Republicans," Sen. Chris Larson of Milwaukee told the cheering crowd, "and in one year we recall the governor that refuses to listen."

Walker is not eligible to be recalled until he completes his first year in office in January 2012.

Eight of the Democrats also face recall efforts. Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald issued a statement Saturday calling them the most shameful 14 people in the state.

"(Fleeing to Illinois) is an absolute insult to the hundreds of thousands of Wisconsinites who are struggling to find a job, much less one they can run away from and go down to Illinois – with pay," Fitzgerald said.

Walker's plan has spurred a national debate over labor rights. Its passage is a key victory for Republicans who have targeted unions in efforts to cut government spending across the country. Democrats see it as a blatant attempt to weaken organized labor, one of their strongest campaign allies.

Labor leaders have promised to use the setback to fire up members and mount a major counterattack against Republicans at the ballot box in 2012.

"We're never going to give up," said Marilyn Rolfsmeyer, 56, who serves as the 300-student Argyle School District's only art teacher. "What part of it don't they understand? There's hope here. I feel it. You feel the energy, the intensity. Somebody's got to be out there feeling it, too."

Dozens of fist-pumping farmers drew cheers as they chugged around the Capitol square in tractors bearing signs with messages such as "planting the seeds for a big season of recalls."

Tod Pulvermacher, 33, of Bear Valley, towed a manure spreader carrying a sign that read, "Walker's bill belongs here."

"Farmers are working-class Americans," he said as the crowd cheered. "We work for a living as hard as anybody, and this is about all of us."

Walker has repeatedly argued that ending collective bargaining gives local governments much-needed flexibility to confront cuts in state aid necessary to fix Wisconsin's deficit, which is expected to grow to $3.6 billion deficit over two years.

The new law erases public workers' ability to collectively bargain anything except wages up to the rate of inflation. It also requires them to contribute more to their pensions and health care, changes that amount to an 8 percent pay cut. Police and firefighters are exempt.

The Senate Democrats had fled to deny Republicans, who hold a 19-14 Senate majority, the 20-member quorum needed to vote on measures that spend money. But GOP leaders worked around them Wednesday, calling a special committee to take spending items out of Walker's proposal.

The Senate passed it 18-1 minutes later. Assembly Republicans approved it the next day.

Democratic Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk has filed a lawsuit seeking to block the secretary of state from publishing the law, the last step before it takes effect. She argues the bill still contained fiscal items and that the committee meeting violated Wisconsin's open meeting law.

This is a victory for the freedom of educators in WI!

Teachers now have the right to join a union or not!
Teachers now have the right to pay union dues or not!
Instead of reducing jobs on the basis of first-in, first out, those with exceptional work ethic may get to keep their job, regardless of their hire date
Instead of the state collecting dues, teachers now enjoy the freedom to send them in voluntarily!
Teachers get to choose annually to re-certify the union or not.

This may make union leaders more responsive to their members, since it is now truly a choice for their members. Instead of lining their own pockets, they may become more responsive to teachers, on whom that are now dependent, instead of the reverse.

Dream on libs.....15.7% of WI workers are union....68% do not have anyone in their family in a union.
After the protest buses go back to their states, you are left with a stark reminder that its futile.....you do not have the votes.  By the time the election will be held everyone will have realized the Gov acted in the interest of ALL taxpayers.  If you want to be in a union, then go join one in the private sector and compete. Stay out of burdening the public domain.

Yes, WEAC is only 1.77% of WI residents, ya know, the overwhelming majority.
The protests were more about protecting union interests instead of the teachers, which are no longer aligned.

no the Gov acted in the interest of Corporate America. His taking of the phone call by the fake Koch brother more than proved that.
People say they hate unions with little realization of what quality of life they provided for all of America. Union busting is high on the list of Corporate America and these are the first steps towards that goal

You can keep repeating the lie all you want....it won't make it true.  I didn't see him outlaw unions altogether.  This simply brings WI in line with most other States that survive just fine without public unions. When will you realize that making northern cold climate States competitive for businesses to locate requires the State to be as efficient as possible?  Public unions sap State revenue not available in this economy.  That Walker was able to KEEP these people working without pay cuts should give you pause to acknowledge this was the right thing to do.  Of course, if you are a union boss in need of keeping the rank and file dues coming in for your personal income, I am sure you would be nervous.  I don't think many people care about them.

Because you're a Republican and say so? Guy, it is going to happen in WI. At least a few of these knucklehead Sens will be recalled fairly quickly. Walker will be recalled come Nov.

No matter what Fox tells you, you're the minority on this issue. Just like you were/are on Health Care and raising taxes on the rich. I don't know how much longer you'll walk against the river and tell yourself the current points that way?

To person whose comment got erased.

NO rich people shouldn't be taxed on what they've amassed thus far. What they earn from here on out should be taxed at 3 - 5% more. Then you wouldn't need to cut nickel and dime programs to FANE like you're fiscally responsible.

It's not fiscally responsible to give 1.75 billion in tax cuts to the rich and then take 1.6 billion from education to do so. It's f@sc1st, and it's redistributing wealth to the top 2%.

I brought up fascism. What do you think privatizing prison is Clark? The merger of corporation and gov is fascism. Privatized prisons, having stock in them go up due to locking more people away, is a disgusting practice. Definitely like something out of Stalins playbook.

For crying out loud, what difference do elections make? Even if we (R's) lose, we'll just run away, or do something else to muck up the gears of government. We were just schooled in how to negate elections. Elections are so old school.

The top 5% of wage earners in the US also pay 60% of all federal income taxes in the US. The bottom 50% pay only 2%. Those greedy capitalists are probably paying your internet service bill as we speak because even THAT can get subsidized by the govt.....
03:12 PM on 03/15/2011
The top 5% own probably more then 30x's what the bottom 50% pay.

Greedy losers earning 17K a year not paying enough taxes. Poor millionaires... so strapped.

Pst.. that's your argument. Failure.

You don't pay income taxes on what you own, you pay income taxes on what you earn. If someone has amassed money, you want to punish them?

Elections Have Consequences — Unless Liberals Lose. A few days after taking office, President Obama pointedly told Republicans during stimulus-bill discussions that “elections have consequences.” Last November, Republicans won back a share of power in Washington. They also won big victories in the states, including Wisconsin. Those elections have consequences, too, as conservative pundits have pointed out during the Wisconsin union furor. But 14 Democratic senators did not accept what happened last November and fled the state, keeping the duly elected representatives of the people from operating.
Losing an election doesn’t mean you have to like it. Go ahead, be outraged at the Wisconsin union bill. If you think Gov. Scott Walker and the Republican legislature went too far, take your outrage to the ballot box in 2012. That’s democracy.
12:55 PM on 03/15/2011
And the PEOPLE all over are saying...Republicans came not to govern for the people but to bring gifts to their corporate masters! That's clear! Yes, election have consequences...but the consequences of political/corporate greed while neglecting the people will result in revolt!
02:24 PM on 03/15/2011
So typical. I have heard many in Wisconsin say, "I hope Republicans run in
2012 with the slogan "We are union busters."

Funny....the goosesteppers were at the capital building with protest signs from what I recall.

I'm a Wisconsin native and went home to be part of this rally. It's curious that you described the crowd at least twice as "angry." Angry, absolutely, but also remarkably hopeful. I've rarely experienced such kindness and easy laughter between strangers, and the anger was complemented by confidence in our solidarity and ultimate victory over Scott Walker et al. It's a Pyrrhic victory for the Republicans... and several signs noted that Walker, a college dropout with blatant disdain for public education, might need to ask a teacher what "Pyrrhic" meant!

I find it quite humorous that liberals are so convinced that the general population really gives a dm about public unions being upset they have to join the rest of the workforce and compete.  Only 32% of the WI workforce is union or have a family member that is.  Once Walker's savings are realized, the taxpayers will see he was right....as hard as that is for your side to realize.

I'm really tired of the hired right wing posters that infest this site. We get one or two new ones each day. These poster are recognized by their methods, sniping. They post one right wing propaganda piece direct from party central, then on to the next subject, post, run away and repeat. Their goal? Simply feces slinging? Demoralization? Agitprop, yeah that the one agitprop.

I recommend thanking them for validating our efforts by taking the time to find these threads and comment. By trying to demoralize us, they prove that they believe in our power to make the changes we are committed to making. Just ignore the rest of the content of their posts--it is usually empty propaganda, not worth debating or defending against.

Let us not forget to forge ahead, remember the past three weeks in Wisconsin, and the huge and tragic final decision and vote again the Unions in Wisconsin. The future of America state for state is an everyday fight against the harm done by a few very rich and powerful people. Together we can reverse this horrible bill of Scott Walker's and the Republican party. But, we must work and keep the Unions and the fight alive until the people responsible for this misjustice are removed from office. It may be in a few months, or it may come in a year, but the fight is everyday. Let us do this everyday.
