iPhone 5 Features Won't Include 'Wave And Pay' NFC Tech: REPORT

REPORT: iPhone 5 To Omit New 'Wave And Pay' Tech

Most Apple rumors focus on what new features Apple's up-and-coming gadgets will have, from cameras to chips. But the latest buzz around the iPhone 5 points to a new technology that will be missing from the next generation smartphone.

According to the Independent, which cites "sources at several of the largest mobile operators in the UK," Apple will not be including Near Field Communication technology in the iPhone 5, which is expected this summer.

NFC enables handsets and other gadgets to transmit data to other electronic devices when at close range. For example, a user could pay for coffee just by waving their NFC-enabled phone over a sensor at a register.

The Independent wrote,

One source close to the discussions said: "The new iPhone will not have NFC, Apple told the operators it was concerned by the lack of a clear standard across the industry." Yet Apple is understood to be working on its own NFC proposition, which would link payments through iTunes. It hopes to introduce the technology in a handset likely to be released next year.

Bloomberg had previously reported that Apple was working on NFC-based services that, "would let customers use its iPhone and iPad computer to make purchases."
