Japan Earthquake 2011: Tsunami Wave Washes Through Sendai Airport (VIDEO)

First Posted: 03/14/11 09:22 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:40 PM ET

On Friday, there was haunting video of the earthquake shot from inside Narita airport, as well as a view of the tarmac and runway at Sendai airport being washed over by a wave (see below for both).

There is new footage of inside Sendai airport and the obvious confusion and fear of the people is apparent. People stand at the windows watching the wave roll in before they think better of it; there is constant screaming and panic in their voices. And around the :46 second mark is when the power of a tsunami wave becomes evident.

Just watching the videos of the earthquakes, the tsunamis, and the exploding nuclear sites makes me feel physically sick, so it is hard to imagine actually experiencing any of it.
Other videos of diligent rescuers, workers, and other Japanese show their amazing courage and sense of purpose in the midst of such incomparable destruction.
We call can learn a lesson from their actions.

The list of tremendous after shocks is incomprehensible, the most recent quiet shallow

God, imagine those who had family picking them up or had just dropped them at the airport and had to see them swept away like that. After seeing things like this, I'm not going to complaint about my own life for a long time.
What a horror they have gone through!

So terrifying
hard to sleep at night thinking about it all

What is the most terrifying about the first video is that at the 23-sec mark, you can see a guy running away from the tsunami. Given the speed at which the first wave arrives, you can guess the rest... Hair raising.

I can't even imagine. One video in there shows the force of the waves just pushing homes out of the way like they are nothing...it's unreal to think waves can be that powerful...then to think if there were people in their homes which would be ter rible...even if they were lucky enough to get out..then you have to think about how they lost everything in just a few seconds...so sad. My hearts go out to them.

I can't imagine having to go through that. Seems like those that were at the airport were pretty safe. Granted they were probably stranded, but safe. I live in California and people are always wondering when the next earthquake is coming round.

Except for the family and friends of those that were dropping off and picking up passengers.

Not likely that anyone at ground level could have survived.

Every time I think about what it must have been like for people on the ground there, I get an asthma attack. It must have been like the world was ending.

I have been through lots of hurricanes and floods and that surreal feeling that you get when you realize that it is over lasts for a very long time. They are going to need a lot of love and patience for a long time.

My first quake was in the range of 14 seconds long. If you had asked me, I would have said it lasted five minutes.

I was at the Narita airport several months ago, and it's so scary to watch this...Thoughts going to everyone affected by this tragedy.
