New York Times Solicits Pet Videos

Good evening, oxpeckers. We stand accused of an over-reliance on "adorable kitten videos," I hear. From today's New York Times "Well" blog:

Aye, verily, we stand on the shoulders of giants. That's a phrase I've aggregated from Sir Isaac Newton, who had aggregated it from Bernard de Chartres. (I aggregated this observation from Kirby Ferguson's "Everything Is A Remix.")

Wow... I must have missed something on this one. I read the headline to this and got instantly happier... I read the comments here and the Claws are out, BABY! What gives? People love their pets, they live with them, talk incessantly about them and cannot wait to share videos, pictures, etc. If NYT wants to do an article on them I think that would be awesome. ! This from someone who can't close her eyes without a replay of the tsunami in Japan playing in her head on an endless loop. Lighten up people, pets will keep you sane, or at least they'll try. I'm going to go give my chubby pup another cookie... guess we'll be spending extra hours hiking this week end trying to work it off.. but hey, he's great company and even carries the water! It's sunny and 75 in AZ .. our politics suck here but right now... it's just FAB! Accept happiness when you can, from whatever the source. That's my motto today and my spoiled pit bull and I are going to make a real go at keeping it!

Hey, pal, don't even attempt to get into an `editorial battle' with The New York Times. The Times does more serious work in a day than you'll do in a lifetime. You're out of your league. Even though I understand your motivation: See, Queen Bee, I'm busy defending you.

In the run up to the Iraq invasion the NYT was nothing more than a propaganda machine for the administration. Even to this day their coverage of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is pitiful.

I appreciate your concern over the Times coverage at that critical time. However, my defense of the Times in this case is not an effort to defend Judith Miller et al. My comment is connected to the ongoing hissing match between AH and the Times' Bill Keller. No one will ever convince me that the HP is a journalistic enterprise on par with the Times. And while AH might be offended when people call the HP an aggregator - which it is - the HP has no trouble linking to the Times on the important story of the day - day in and day out. In fact, HP is not only an aggregator, it's become a rather handy `news cafeteria' offering many items from a number of sources.

The NYT was once a paper which printed "all the news that's fit to print," but I don't go out of way to buy their paper or check out what's on the front page online anymore.

I have no confidence in what they have to say.

At one time, the NYT was firing writers with a difference of opinion in regard to Iraq and the Bush administration.

Don't get me wrong -- I love cute kittens who wrestle crocodiles, singing dogs who ride tigers, and all manner of other critters. I just want an oasis above the Tropic of Lowest Common Denominator. Is that too much to ask?
