Chris Matthews: Huckabee's Obama Comments Were 'Racist'

Chris Matthews called Mike Huckabee's recent comments about President Obama's childhood "racist" in an appearance on Monday's "Tonight Show."

Matthews began by discussing the 2012 presidential field with Jay Leno. He called the prospective candidates "the weakest list of candidates that I've ever seen." Leno then asked him about Huckabee. Matthews then brought up Huckabee's comments, which he made on a New York radio station earlier in March.

Huckabee said that Obama "grew up" in Kenya, and that his "view of the Brits" was different from most Americans because of their role in fighting the Mau Mau Revolution in Kenya.

Huckabee later said that he misspoke, and meant to refer to Indonesia, not Kenya. Matthews has repeatedly said he doesn't believe Huckabee, and he repeated this assertion to Leno.

"[Obama] never spent one day of his life in Kenya," Matthews said. "...I think it's racist. I'm sorry. I think that's the game they're playing."
