Annie Lennox Explains Her '80s & '90s Suit Uniform

Annie Lennox

Grazia recently caught up with the woman, the legend Annie Lennox.

Annie has found herself dragged onto the HuffPost Style page lately with her daughter Tali's rise to fame in the modeling world, but what did the rocker have to say about her own dressing? She revealed that Dolce & Gabbana was inspired by her fashion statement throughout the '80s and '90s, turning out suits for its last collection.

And about those suits that Annie lived in on stage:

At first -- because I didn't have any money, I always wore second-hand costumes, then I'd get friends of mine who were designers to make me stuff which I designed, or to customize the second hand bits. That's when I did all my experimenting, and made all my most hideous mistakes! Then by the time I got together with Dave Stewart [her bandmate in Eurythmics] I'd made all my mistakes and I knew exactly what I wanted. I wanted to wear a suit to show that I am equal to a man, not that I was wanted to be one, or that I was gay -- which is what it was interpreted as...but there you go. People like to put all kinds of interpretations of their own on things. It is what it is. But you can't go on being that person in the suit with the red hair your whole life, you have to move on. Now, I like fashion when it's someone expressing something different, I don't like it so much when it's girls on the red carpet and it's this designer, that designer or when it's all about how much money you've got.

Annie Lennox has also seemed a strong personality because of her beautiful voice and the confidence with which she projects it, but also she has seemed authentic in her efforts to express herself. While some women still even consciously choose to give their power away ( in different ways such as not developing talents, or in relationships at work or personal), Annie has used her voice and also the symbolism of clothing to show how women are powerful. She does this better than many celebrities and I wonder if it has been lonely for her. I admire her efforts.

Love her! I'd wear my hair like hers if I thought it would look as good. I'm afraid it would make me look like an old onion.

This woman, after 30 years still rocks the house and can belt out a tune like very few female pop singers can these days

I gotta chime in. I love Annie Lennox. She has such range, power and pure soul in her voice and lyrics. At the height of the Eurythmics I was going through some real c* as well as many changes in my whole worldview... her songs, and Paul Simon's I have to say, got me through some really bad days.
Missionary Man. That song rocks.
Kind of like Barbara Kingsolver's book The Poisonwood Bible reviewed in song! :)

Gee, I always wondered about that... NOT! The Eurythmics were always just a new wave Captain and Tennille, but I'm big enough to admit I have their greatest hits CD.

There is a small difference....both Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox have become a reference when it comes to pop music from the 80's and 90's...and Annie Lennox is still recording and performing, and most of people know who both are...Captain and Tenille.....hummm, not quite sure

I agree with Annie's quote "Many young women feel the label of "feminist" is, at best, irrelevant to their lives and, at worst, a stigma to be avoided at all costs".

Most young women don't know what it was like before. They're mostly content to text and purchase the latest at the mall.

True. When I get that blank look from a young woman, I tell them that just 15 years ago a judge in our area told a woman who wanted to change her name (her father had just died and she wanted to honor him) had to go home and get her husband's written permission.

Annie Lennox... The female version of David Bowie or vice versa, hard to tell.

I'd eat broken glass just for the chance to see you walk on broken glass to hear her sing.

To hear her sing about walking on broken glass, I forgot to add.
