Los Angeles Animal Rescue Of The Week: Much Love Animal Rescue

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 03/16/11 01:32 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:40 PM ET

Much Love Animal Rescue was founded in 1999 by Niki Wior. While working as a swimsuit designer downtown, Wior encountered many stray animals and, after continually taking them to city shelters, she decided to start a rescue organization of her own to help ease the problem of animal overpopulation in LA.

After initially rescuing and housing just a few animals at a time, Wior was able to grow her organization with the help of volunteers. Considering the organization is 100% non-profit and kept running entirely through donation and volunteering, volunteer Stacy Bodell says, "just being here for over 11 years and being able to make a small impact in the pet overpopulation problem in Los Angeles is a huge accomplishment." Since Wior founded Much Love, approximately 3,000 neglected and stray animals have been rescued and placed in loving homes.

Bodell says, "Much Love does not just rescue the perfect dogs and cats. We are constantly taking the animals who need medical attention, behavior training, or older animals." The organization believes that all animals deserve a home and is willing to work with all types of rescued strays.

Though all of the organization's animals are currently in foster homes or boarded in cage-free facilities, the Much Love Animal Rescue's ultimate goal is to have a facility to house its animals in one centralized location. In the mean time, Much Love holds mobile adoptions every Saturday in Venice on the corner of Venice Blvd & Abbot Kinney and Sunday in Santa Monica on Main Street just north of Ocean Park from 10:30-3. I think the biggest myth about shelters is that they're full of strays. Most were pets that for whatever reason the previous owners couldnt keep. At least visit a shelter before you call a breeder
