Gaddafi Tells Rebel City, Benghazi, 'We Will Show No Mercy'

Gadhafi

TRIPOLI, March 17 (Reuters) - Muammar Gaddafi told Libyan rebels on Thursday his armed forces were coming to their capital Benghazi tonight and would not show any mercy to fighters who resisted them.

In a radio address, he told Benghazi residents that soldiers would search every house in the city and people who had no arms had no reason to fear.

"It's over ... We are coming tonight," he said. "You will come out from inside. Prepare yourselves from tonight. We will find you in your closets."

The speech was broadcast on radio and television shortly after a defence ministry statement warned that any foreign military action would trigger counter-attacks and endanger all air and sea traffic in the Mediterranean region.

In Benghazi, live footage on Al Jazeera television showed hundreds of defiant Libyan rebels gathered in the central square waving the tricolour flag of the monarchy era in a rally after Gaddafi's speech was broadcast.

In the speech, the Libyan leader denounced the rebels and said: "We will show no mercy and no pity to them".

He also told his troops not to pursue any rebels who drop their guns and flee when government forces reach the city.

It was not clear whether any government attack would actually follow the short speech.

Tripoli has been trying to put psychological pressure on the rebel capital by warning residents to avoid rebel installations and reporting pro-Gaddafi rallies there that residents say never took place.

Rebels have scoffed at the reports, saying they proved the Libyan army was not strong enough to attack.

Gaddafi's speech came only hours before the United Nations Security Council was due to vote on a resolution on imposing a no-fly zone over Libya.

Actually, he said "We should show no mercy", not "we will show no mercy". And to whom? To the leaders of the rebellion, just as the leaders of the rebellion say they won't rest until Qaddafi and his people are dead or ready to be hanged.

It's time the world deals with this dictator. Gaddafi has been tolerated for decades and now he's killing his own people who no longer support him. I'm disappointed with the German's for not showing solidarity against this tyrant. And I thank the French and British along with the Arab states for supporting the effort to end Gaddafi's oppression against his own people.

War is a nasty business and always should be a last resort, but Gaddafi has proven his ruthlessness time and again. He has no business being the leader of a country when after 40 years in power, he brazenly defies the wishes of his countrymen to retire and let the people vote in their own new leadership.

Why do I have a feeling he's going to want to move to Haiti. It seems like every dictators is moving there.
Look at it this way, this man has conones when he thinks he can get away with butchering the very people he claims to "lead" while the world watches. Where's his conscience?
A conscience is what makes us human and brutal dictators have none.

Gaddafi is indeed evil but I would caution the readers about military intervention. We did not intervene in Rwanda or Dafur or Burma or North Korea all of which are more or less involved in Genocide. So it is after all OIL. Wasn't that the case in Iraq? Aren't pipelines the reason for Afghanistan? Nobody in their right mind would spend hundreds of Billions to find a rag tag group of terrorists, or would they? So I believe an intervention militarily in Libya has something to do with Oil.

No, it is in response to the ruthless actions of Gaddifi, slaughtering his own people. I am very relieved that the US finally stepped up and agreed to this. We are the reason it took so long. We discouraged NATO and the UN earlier. This is an action taken for a just cause. We are standing up for freedome and democracy for the people of Libya.

I don't like it either. We are very selective when it comes to attacking someone. And I don't think America should lead the charge, let one of these other nations be the policeman for a change, let the muslims put an army in there or at least pay for it. We did their dirty work in Bosnia and we're at it again. I don't want Ghadaffi to win but I am jittery about intervening militarily. We may be punching a tar baby.

He didnt' slaughter his own people.

He was fighting against rebels who are trying to overthrow and destablize Libya.

No fly zone is just the beginning of a war, just look at the history of a no fly zone. Especially in Iraq, where it started with a no fly zone, than ground troops, establishing a government.

What about our actions in bosnia?

Do we occupy Bosnia now? Did we Establish a government there?

The situation needs more than a no-fly zone. if the UN and member nations, want to intervene, then do so and knock Gaddafi out instead of setting the no-fly zone gimmick. Is mass genocide only illegal when the shooting/bombing is carried out from the sky? Gaddafi has done enough damage relying on his ground forces. If the point is to end the mass killing of civilians, then either engineer a ceasefire or cut off the head of the snake. It is interesting that all the commentary is about creating a "fair fight." In otherwards, we can watch them slaughter each other as long as we take away the extra gadgets from one of the fighters. Great job United Nations...

I can't remember any time in history when public opinion was sought before a military invasion.
