Politicos Go Green: See Who's Feted St. Patrick's Day In Style (PHOTOS, POLL)

First Posted: 03/17/11 06:50 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:40 PM ET

Update: Take a look at Michelle's emerald ensemble on Thursday night.

Previously: O, man! President Barack O'Bama, John Boehner, Taoiseach of Ireland Enda Kenny and U.S. Rep. Peter King color coordinated on Thursday, celebrating St. Patrick's Day in green ties.

But they're hardly the first politicos to go bragh!

Take a look at how others have feted the Irish in style -- from Hillary Clinton's shamrock scarf to Rudy Giuliani fending off green-clad revelers circa 2000.

Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH), U.S. President Barack Obama, Taoiseach of Ireland Enda Kenny and U.S. Rep. Peter King (R-NY) go matchy-matchy-matchy-matchy in green ties on March 17, 2011.

President Obama is a bigger man than I am. I wouldn't stand within 10' of Rusty Bohner, let alone laugh with him.

Only Boehner would wear a mint green tie -- he is such a girl.

Note to copy editor: St. Patrick was a man named in Irish Gaelic, Padraig, pronounced PAWrig. The correct nickname for the holiday is St. Paddy's Day.

Personally, I see superficial attempts to relate to Irish culture, as tacky, and I resent the insulting, demeaning attempts to celebrate Irish heritage by drunkenness and silly jokes and clothing.

People who would like to celebrate the culture should realize that it was built on graceful strength through unimaginable hardship. Irish people traditionally face adversity with stoicism, humor, spirituality and, yes, some with alcohol. A little-known group outside of Ireland, however, is the Pioneers who vow never to touch a drop of alcohol for their entire lives. They wear lapel pins to proclaim their commitment to abstinence from drink.

When I see people approach St. Patrick's day as a joke, an excuse to get drunk and loud, I realize that they don't see Irish people at all.

Ireland has produced some of the world's greatest literature and music. Wouldn't it be better to use these to celebrate Irish culture and heritage (along with some good food and a Guinness or two)?

Well, even Jesus enjoyed a good time, and one of his miracles was to make more wine so the party could continue. Your complaints about stereotyping are valid and apply to many cultures and the Americanization of their festivals. How do they celebrate St. Paddy's day in Ireland?

Definitely going to see Obama when he visits Ireland in May. I've already told my boss I won't be in that day.

Someone needs to tell your uninformed headline writer that the nickname for Patrick is "Paddy"---not "Patty."

They need to figure out how to make women's suits look as good on them as men's suits look on men. POTUS and Boehner (see I can put politics aside for fashion) both look very handsome in theirs.

Yes and Boehner was even smiling...sort off.

Usually he looks like a sulking kid who didn't get his icecream at the zoo.
08:52 AM on 03/18/2011
Ah, I think Weeps the Speakah wants more than just ice cream, he want the whole zoo. And given who his friends are, he's close.

Women in general don't like wearing shoulder pads and stiffening in our lapels.  Not to mention men's suits are boring; why do you think they're called "men's furnishings"? More like upholstery than clothing.

St Patrick's day....It's a day when you have a few too many drinks, or just your average day for John Boehner.
11:06 PM on 03/17/2011
Green tie, white shirt, orange face? John Boehner is the flag of Ireland personified.
