Alexandra Wallace, Student In Anti-Asian Rant, Says She'll Leave UCLA

Alexandra Wallace

LOS ANGELES — A student who posted an Internet video of her tirade against the Asian population at the University of California, Los Angeles, said Friday night that she is leaving the school, despite the university's decision not to discipline her.

In a statement to the Daily Bruin campus newspaper, Alexandra Wallace said she has chosen to no longer attend classes at UCLA because of what she called "the harassment of my family, the publishing of my personal information, death threats and being ostracized from an entire community" in the wake of the three-minute video.

"In an attempt to produce a humorous YouTube video, I have offended the UCLA community and the entire Asian culture," Wallace said in the statement, her second apology of the week. "Especially in the wake of the ongoing disaster in Japan, I would do anything to take back my insensitive words. I could write apology letters all day and night, but I know they wouldn't erase the video from your memory, nor would they act to reverse my inappropriate action."

Earlier Friday, university officials said they would not discipline Wallace because her video was an exercise of free speech, not hate speech, and it didn't violate the student code of conduct.

UCLA's vice chancellor for student affairs, Janina Montero, said in a statement that campus officials were "appalled and offended by the sentiments expressed in the video," but it did not seek to harm or threaten a specific person or group.

In the video, Wallace said her complaints aren't directed at any individual and people shouldn't take offense, but "the problem is these hordes of Asian people that UCLA accepts into our school every single year."

She says the numbers would be fine if Asian students would "use American manners" and goes on to complain about Asians frequently talking on their mobile phones while she tries to study. At one point she mocks them with gibberish.

Wallace suggests in the video that people calling to check on the fate of Japan's tsunami victims go outside so they won't freak people out if they get bad news.

Wallace took down the rant shortly after posting it Sunday, but it had already gone viral and sparked a strong reaction at UCLA, where at least 37 percent of the school's 26,000 undergraduates are Asian, 32 percent are white, 16 percent are Hispanic and 4 percent are black.

Wallace could not be reached for further comment.

The poor girl was just venting. College can be stressful. It is rude to talk on your cell phone in the library, though I've seen plenty of students of all races do it. But she's in a school that has a lot of Asian students, and white students are now starting to feel like a minority at a lot of schools, especially in California.

I'm not saying this should excuse what she said, but she is clearly NOT a racist, and even if she was I can't imagine why the Asian community would care so much about the opinions of one white college girl.

Most Asian American people I know are very civil reasonable people, and would be more shocked that this poor girl is receiving death threats than over the mildly offensive comments she made. But maybe it's an LA thing...

Everyone has inappropriate thoughts and feelings towards a multitude of individuals every day of their life. The difference is that most of us don't post them on the internet for all the world to see. Racism is nothing new and if someone were to show me a picture of this girl and tell me she was a racist I may or may not chose to believe them, this girl removed all doubt.

The over-reaching issue I see here if the pervasive sense of total security and entitlement that this girl and her generation seem to be steeped in. There are lines in this world and if someone had taken the time to show her where they are and imparted to her the knowledge that society will crush her regardless of her cup size if she crosses one she might still be at UCLA with all the obnoxious Asians....but hey, look on the bright side! She can still be a Fox News anchor.

So she's 21 years old and acting like that in the video? Oh lord.
Here's what's more interesting:

However, it seems the original video was not intended to be a one-time hit.
"My daughter wants to start a blog," wrote Wallace's dad on his Facebook page.
John Wallace, a Sacramento-area retail developer, posted on Friday at 11:17 a.m.: "She's asking for domain suggestions for 'Asians on their cellphones in the library!' She's shooting videos as I write."
John Wallace also posted March 3 that his daughter was selected for the audience of MTV's "Jersey Shore" reunion show.
Father and daughter did not respond to numerous attempts by The Bee to seek comment.

Not sure what this little girl had been studying, but I do hope that she understands that when she applies for a position they will Google her name. Her attitudes and her decision to express them during a monumental tragedy will effect her for a long, long time.

What? A young semi-literate blond accused of r@cism by those California liberals? And Fox News haven't offered her a contract??? LOL!

I wouldn't want to be her the next day stepping out of her dorm room and facing students down the halls wondering which ones saw my video clip. Class must have been awkward after that. Listening to her speak, she doesn't sound bright either. But the main question is, who were her intended audience?

Anyways, Recording a r@cist video diary = FAIL!

....Recording a r@cist video diary then posting it on Youtube for the world to see..while still in college = EPIC FAIL!!

What are poorly thought out youtube rant. This will definitely be one of her "top 10 regrets" (the assumption being she shall have more than a few if this youtube video is anything to go by)

So will this foster a greater xenophobic nature in the 'all american girl'?

Check out homepageDAILY's Rebecca Scotts look at this humorous, racist albeit sad story!

I have been to comedy clubs and heard much worse racial rants and everybody laughs and no one says boo. Just because someone stands onstage and has a mike somehow that makes it o.k?
08:19 PM on 03/22/2011
sweetsoutherngirl,

I understand what you are trying to say.... however! Those jokes and comedic rants are self-deprecating. In other words they are ridiculing themselves and those who are xenophobic, or racist towards others it is not in fact denigration of race but ridiculing racists!

Next time you enter a comedy club think about that, and really listen to what they are actually saying... If in fact I am wrong and the comedy clubs you visit are racist comedians, well you should probably shift to some new comedy hangouts!

take care and have a read of HomepageDAILY's twist on these events: http://bit.ly/gQClPo

I agree with Homepagedaily, and you might also want to remind yourself what happened to Michael Richards (see his racist rant on youtube). There are comedic takes on race and other social issues, and then there's racism on stage. Two different things altogether.
