Knut The Polar Bear Dead: Famous Animal Dies In German Zoo (PHOTOS/VIDEO)

| 03/19/11 12:31 PM ET | AP

BERLIN (AP) -- Berlin's beloved polar bear Knut, who rose to stardom when he was hand-raised by zoo keepers after being rejected by his mother rejected at birth, died on Saturday, a zoo official said.

The world-famous bear died alone in his compound, bear keeper Heiner Kloes told The Associated Press.

"He was by himself in his compound, he was in the water, and then he was dead," said Kloes. "He was not sick, we don't know why he died."

A post mortem will be conducted on Monday to try pinpoint his cause of death, he said.

Between 600 and 700 people were at Knut's compound and saw the four-year-old bear die, German news agency DAPD reported.

Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit called Knut's death "awful."

"We all held him so dearly," Wowereit told daily newspaper B.Z. "He was the star of the Berlin zoos."

The polar bear rose to global fame after he was rejected by his mother when he was born in captivity on December 5, 2006. The fluffy cub was shown to the public 15 weeks later, and attendance at the zoo has roughly doubled since, officials said.

The resulting "Knutmania" led to a 2007 Vanity Fair cover with actor Leonardo DiCaprio shot by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz, a film and plush likenesses. Though the zoo has never released exact numbers, Knut merchandise including postcards, key chains, candy and stuffed Knuts have brought in hundreds of thousands of euros.

Berlin's superstar polar bear Knut, who died suddenly over the weekend aged just four, likely fell victim to undiagnosed brain damage, his zoo said Tuesday.
Berlin Zoo said in a statement that a preliminary necropsy conducted Monday revealed "significant changes to the brain, which could be seen as the reason for the sudden death of the polar bear".
It said no other organ damage had been identified but that the examination of the cadaver was continuing.

How utterly and completely sad. I'm so saddened by this news. Knut was such an adorable cub and such an ambassador for his species which is in so much peril today. Truly, I'm saddened to hear this news...God bless him...

Sometimes a mother rejects her young in the animal kingdom because there is something wrong with the cub and the mother knows it. Perhaps mamma bear knew more than the zookeepers.

He was sad and depressed probably. I remember the touching interview with the man who took care of Flipper and creator of the documentary The Cove. He was convinced that the Dolphin they used to act as Flipper had committed suicide in his arms. They could not find what was ailing him, but that he seemed to have given up. I cannot imagine what captivity must be like for wild animal's, not to able to forage and hunt and follow their primal instincts, because as 'wild' animals thats all they have. They can't paint or write or build, they survive, thats how they thrive and live. Poor little Knut, I'm really sad for him, and send him much love

Attention from children? You mean with a glass barrier between them? Knut was a multi-million dollar commodity to the Zoo. They (the Zoo) chose to keep him alive through human interraction after his mother rejected him, and he formed an incredibly loving bond with the zookeeper, Thomas Dorflein. Knut was heartbroken after Dorflein was told by the Zoo he could no longer be around Knut. By the way, Knut is known to have been rejected by his mother because her instinctive awareness that "something was wrong with him," but in reality, the mother had behavioral issues of her own from being a former circus animal. The bottom line, as I see it, is that many bad decisions were made on the behalf of this beautiful creature which started when his mother was captured from the wild and became a source of revenue for the benefit of human entertainment. The circumstances surrounding Knut's life are heartbreaking.

It varies on the species, the enclosure, and the animal. Dolphins and whales have it especially tough, having a highly developed sense of hearing and being limited to a small, reflective pond as opposed to the open ocean. The hard sides are so sound-reflective that they literally drive wild animals crazy at first. It’s be like living in a brightly-lit house of mirrors.

I have a big big soft spot for animals and right now I'm sitting here in tears that he died. If you're a dog or cat owner or a pet owner and your pet suddenly dies that is heart wrenching. I can remember for several months being depressed when my dog Bruno passed away it was like a void.

And in looking a these pictures just breaks my heart when you know the story of Knut, I won't get that chance to visit him as I had been planning at some point to make a trip over to Berlin not only to visit him but the city as well.

RIP Knut!!

I can dig it. Do something for another suffering animal in his memory. Or get involved in putting an end to zoos. Or whatever you believe will help. That's how I deal with transcending my anguish. So it doesn't destroy you, you know?

Is it possible the mother that rejected him knew he had some defect that would lead to an early demise? Hope they find out what happened.

You are correct. There are many reasons an anial will reject the cub. They know what they are doing. They have a built in system part of nature without ego involved. And though WE couldn't see it her instinct was correct.....it's nature at work....

looks like this author left out some information

there is an uproar and animal rights activists are upset and blaming the zoo for the animals death, after of course, wanting to kill the polar bear when it was first abandoned

This is PETA propaganda (the only good animal is a dead animal).

Knut contributed a lot to people's love of polar bears and the resulting alarm at climate change. Polar bears are losing their natural habitat. They're drowning in the wild. Would we be as sympathetic if it weren't for Knut and his brethren up close and personal, connecting with us in zoos?

Knut wasn't mistreated. He was loved. He was spoiled and indulged.

He didn't die from mistreatment or cruelty. It looks very much like he died of a birth defect, a weak artery in his brain, an aneurism, a stroke. Something caused him pain and then a seizure from which he died.

It could have happened to any wild bear but then we would not have seen it or cared.

Knut made polar bears personal. That was his gift to us.

To all the naysayers- Knut had four more years than he would have had in the wild, when his mother's rejection would have been a death sentence.  Sad nonetheless that his time was so short.
