'BeRemedy' Promotes Community Activism, Uses Social Media To Find Donations

Group Uses Social Media To Call On Neighbors To 'Be The Remedy' In Their Communities

An Atlanta-based organization has figured out a way to help people using little more than social media.

Beremedy uses Twitter and Facebook to streamline donations to people in need. The organization's name is a shortened form of their motto: "Be the remedy for someone in need."

Single mother Kecia Cruz recently welcomed home her 20-year-old son, a recovering methadone addict, but didn't have an extra bed in her home for him, CNN reports.

After telling a neighbor about her problem, Cruz soon had a solution -- with a little help from Beremedy.

The neighbor contacted Beremedy, and within 15 minutes of the post on the site, someone responded to Cruz's need.

Hairstylist Ragan Holt, who responded to Beremedy's post, told CNN she was happy her extra bed could go to good use.

"It's the things that we might think we don't need and the things that we might consider trash is someone's treasure."

Beremedy's success is one of many stories of the power of social media to respond and react quickly to people's needs. According to the organization's 26-year-old founder Blake Canterbury, this is just the beginning.

"I think we're just scratching the surface of what we're able to do."
