Book Art: Coolest Book Sculptures By Artist Brian Dettmer (PHOTOS)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 03/21/11 09:12 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:40 PM ET

Literature itself is certainly art, but who knew books could become such beautiful and fascinating visual art as well?

Artist Brian Dettmer alters books to create sculpture, and he explains his process in his statement: "In this work I begin with an existing book and seal its edges, creating an enclosed vessel full of unearthed potential. I cut into the surface of the book and dissect through it from the front. I work with knives, tweezers and surgical tools to carve one page at a time, exposing each layer while cutting around ideas and images of interest. Nothing inside the books is relocated or implanted, only removed. Images and ideas are revealed to expose alternate histories and memories. My work is a collaboration with the existing material and its past creators and the completed pieces expose new relationships of the book's internal elements exactly where they have been since their original conception."

Dettmer's work has been featured and collected throughout the U.S., Mexico, and Europe. It has been exhibited internationally in museums, universities, and art centers.

Just spent the day working on a book I'm making, then sat down to this spectacular treat. Wow!

Loved 'Family Health', 'Carpentry and Building Construction' and 'Chicago Architecture and Design' especially.
What a great way to take a long forgotten text with beautiful illustrations and raise it to the level of art.
Thanks for posting...

For a literary work, gimmicks like these "sculptures" are a distraction from the text and equally so, a photo of the author on the dust jacket. A work of import needs no packaging, if you want visual interaction go to a gallery.

Most books published in France have simple paper covers without ornamentation (other than maybe a colorful slip-on band ... )

I seriously would not have the patience to do something like this, even if I had a smidgen of the talent. Kudos on the amazing work.

From the Artist's website,

"A World on the Wane"

Are those Khadaffi's eyes? plus Nature....

Sort of ironic, after reading the text in the book.

Scroll to 2006 2nd one in from circle (Cassette Tape roll)

Also check out his video. Amazing work.

Everyone of these is truly an amazing work of art. I'd have to say that Manual of Practical Anatomy Vol 3 was my favorite, but they are all fascinating. I'd love to see them up close and see how he makes them.

I stumbled into a gallery exhibiting his work in S.F. and I must say it was breathtaking.
each piece is seems to pull you into the work itself. they make you want to dive into the folds of the book and find what other mysteries besides the story are held within his abstract three dimensional canvas.

I wonder what he could do with "Decision Points" or "Going Rogue"?
Probably like asking Michelangelo to sculpt David from a pile of dung.
