American medical and pharmaceutical scientists with a good science degree are in high demand in company's located in Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Macau and Singapore. Try being a 59 year old intelligent, well read grandmother who has worked all her life, but does not have high tech skills. The chances of getting a job that I could survive on, not keep me in the life I used to have, just survive is slim to none. Lord knows I have tried.

This reminds me of what Robert Pollin observed in Bolivia... He saw people selling gum on the street and remarked that something needed to do be done about the unemployment level... someone said, "what unemployment?, the people in the streets are working."

The economics of M. Friedman are leading us in the direction of that type of thinking...

That is a big problem the companies do not want to invest in their employees. Yet the same companies will invest thousands for people to sit in cubicles and look for widows and others so they can sell a subprime loan to. I suppose this is the type of job skill that is needed except for the fact there are no others to rip off.
These people cannot become bill collectors as everyone is too broke to pay a bill.
There was a time a company invested in all employees. Not any more and they wonder why no loyalty to their brands or company.

Manufacturing jobs have always been dead end jobs. That's the reason those jobs are done overseas now and have been replaced with service jobs in the US.
Every manufacturing job will sooner or later be replaced by a machine. The cost of labor is the biggest expense so as production increases, robots or other labor saving devices will replace the humans working.
To increase employment in the US we should begin looking at all the laws passed by special interest trade groups that inhibit and prohibit entry into many service occupations.
Most of the unemployed can't get work because it is illegal for them to do work in which they are qualified or that they want to do.

Don't knock manufacturing jobs, I work in hi-tech manufacturing making $50/hr fixing robots and evaluating statistical data to improve the process. American manufacturing is highly automated and requires some advanced job training. A two year technical community college degree got me in the door. It wasn't expensive to get my skills up to speed.

A lot of our recent hires (yes we're hiring!) have been poor performers. I notice that they all have one trait in common, they don't keep their skills current. You can't depend on your employer to make you marketable.

Up to a college/technical degree is the employee's private responsibly, but after that, once the person starts working for a company, it is the company's responsibility to provided education to keep their employees' skills up to date and the employee's responsibility to learn.

Are you suggesting that your company should not be teaching these new hires anything about the machines they are working with; that they have to do that on their own time and dime? Doesn't your company provide seminars, our short courses or on-the-job training at all?

Manufacturing jobs raised the income and lifestyle levels of a generation of Americans.

The reason those jobs have gone overseas is because of cheap labor, plain and simple. We are no way ready for robotics to eliminate humans from factories 100%, and when we reach that point we will still need those who can repair and program the machines.

Not everyone is on a 'career track', not everyone is degreed. Basic manufacturing jobs provided steady incomes for those in the factory itself as well as the support staff in the offices. By allowing, and often encouraging, our manufacturing base to leave our country, we have eliminated employment opportunities for many, many Americans with varying levels of education and skill.

I am an alumnus of PricewaterhouseCoopers.  They sent us an email recently offering a free I-Pad if we refer a recruit to them who they hire. 

The jobs are highly skilled.  Mostly CPAs with MBAs.

We know who's getting hired - it's NOT Americans.

Sending U.S. jobs overseas

"By a vote of 184-242, the House on Tuesday defeated a Democratic bid to use HR 38 (above) to curb the practice of U.S. companies sending jobs overseas. The motion sought to deny federal contracts to any company determined by the Department of Labor to be outsourcing its work force. There was no debate on the measure."

That's right, folks...NO DEBATE.

"No jobs for 4 of 5 job seekers"

"In January, there were 2.76 million job openings, down slightly from the 2.92 million in December. But there were 13.9 million out of work. That means there were no jobs for four out of five job seekers.

It was the 23rd month in a row that the job seeker ratio was at or above 5-to-1, notes the Economic Policy Institute.

In comparison, after the 2001-02 recession, which also saw employers slow to start hiring, the highest the ratio got was 2.8 job seekers per job opening."
