Atlantic Oil Spill: 20,000 Endangered Penguins Coated In Crude On Tristan Da Cunha Islands

Atlantic Oil Spill Tristan Da Cunha

By JILL LAWLESS   03/22/11 08:47 AM ET   AP

LONDON -- Thousands of endangered penguins have been coated with oil after a cargo ship ran aground and broke up on a remote British South Atlantic territory, officials and conservationists said Tuesday.

The shipwreck also threatens the lobster fishery that provides a livelihood to one of the world's most isolated communities.

The Malta-registered MS Olivia was grounded on Nightingale Island in the Tristan da Cunha chain last week. The ship had been traveling from Brazil to Singapore and contained 1,500 tonnes (1,650 tons) of crude oil and a cargo of 60,000 tonnes (66,000 tons) of soya beans.

The ship's 22 crew members were rescued before it broke in two.

Tristan da Cunha's conservation officer, Trevor Glass, said oil was encircling Nightingale Island and called the situation "a disaster." Island administrators said some 20,000 penguins had been coated in oil.

The territory is home to some 200,000 penguins, including almost half the world's total of northern rockhopper penguins. The bird is classed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources.

Located midway between Africa and South America – more than 2,800 kilometers (1,700 miles) from the nearest land – Tristan da Cunha is home to 275 people who rely on rock lobster fishing for their livelihood. The island administrator said he had temporarily closed the area around Nightingale and nearby Inaccessible Island to fishing.

Richard Cuthbert, a research biologist with Britain's Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, said the wreck was "potentially disastrous for wildlife and the fishery-based economy of these remote islands."

He said that alongside the threat to penguins and sea life, there was a risk rats from the ship could come ashore and eat the chicks and eggs of native seabirds.

"Nightingale is one of two large islands in the Tristan da Cunha group that are rodent-free," Cuthbert said. "If rats gain a foothold, their impact would be devastating.

A salvage tug from South Africa carrying a seabird specialist arrived in Tristan da Cunha on Monday and was assessing the environmental damage.

Officials said they hoped to bring another vessel carrying a penguin-cleaning team from Cape Town to the islands.

The British government said it was very concerned about the situation, but said it was too early to know what the economic and environmental damage to the islands would be.

I am rather surprised by the shoddy reporting of facts sometimes by reporters or commentators in this section. If a mere blogger can Google and detect them, one wonders why the professional plays loose with them?

Examples
The ship "contained 1,500 tonnes (1,650 tons) of crude oil " No it was 1500 tonnes of bunker fuel oil. Still nasty but not crude oil
"Island administrators said some 20,000 penguins had been coated in oil." Island administrators ESTIMATED that 20,000 penguins might be affected. Indeed later reports of numbers of birds fouled are in the tens of hundreds and one rookery on an adjacent island shows no fouling.

I am in no way trying to minimize this disaster, but it seems to me that getting the facts, and where necessary correcting the facts, should be the 'bread and butter' of a competent reporter.

Wonder if the beans were released-- 132 million pounds or so of rotting oil covered beans on the beaches could do a lot of environmental damage also.

275 native population. 20,000 penguins to be cleaned. If every man, woman and child were employed in the cleaning operation, that's about 75 penquins per. Who's organizing this cleanup? Where can funds be sent? Anybody know?

Exxon Valdez spills oil in Alaska, BP drilling in the Gulf of Mexico goes awry, nuclear power plant fails and releases large quantities of radiation, and now we have another tanker spilling oil during an accident.

When will enough be enough?!

Unfortunately, never.

You missed the new leaking rig in the Gulf.

My head is going to explode.

If ony i had a billion $$$ i would help wildlife all i could. It tears me up inside and many times i must stop thinking about it and leave it in Gods hands because it's to painful. He's aware of even one tiny sparrow that falls to the ground.
Revelation 11:18 God will bring to ruin those ruining the earth.
Bible speaks of humans living on earth forever after God destroys the wicked. I wonder what will be left of the animals. You would think with all the polluting of our earth humans would stop using toxic chemicals and use organic natural things. And when transporting oil would be extremely careful. It really makes me angry hearing about those poor penguins covered in crude oil. It smells rotton. I know from smelling crude from BPs well. The oil continuing to be dumped in our waters is disgusting and heartbreaking. ) :

I generally don't have a go at people from this angle, but here goes:

You see Shilow, by " not thinking about it and leave(ing) it in Gods hands " you are doing exactly what the corporatists want you to do, which is absolutely nothing.

We don't need prayer, we need LAWS that protect the environment from exploitation in the first place. We don't need divine intervention, we need the intervention of the COURTS to put offending CEO's and their ilk in prison for a long time, and the forfeiture of their assets as reparation to those affected. We need the participation of the MEDIA to constantly beat the drum.

Dumping oil in our waters is disgusting and heartbreaking. Now let's make it criminal.

Bffinnster/ I hear what you are saying about laws. And making offenders spend jail time. There are many laws and people break them.News is full of people breaking laws. And even if some went to jail the problem is global. The polluting of our earth is going on everywhere. Our wildlife is dying all over the globe. Seems like i hear of another oil spill somewhere on a weekly basis and wild life covered in oil. We do need divine intervention. And God promises to do just that. It will take a higher power than man to put an end to the destruction of this planet. Rev 11:18, all signs are here the bible spoke of. Increasing of great earthquakes, Food shortages, increasing of pestilence's, increasing of crime and violence, and the ruining of the earth.Wars in one place after another.
People will say these things have always occured. Yes, but never all these things at one time on a global scale like they are today. We only have so much time in a day and i try to do what i can to help others to learn the real truth from Gods word. He will bring and end to the suffering of man and the animals by destroying the wicked. Man was meant to live forever and not die. This will be a reality for those that love God.

How many environmental crisis, minor and major, are we juggling right now? In the end,it seems like the most dedicated and outspoken greens, like the Cradle2Cradle designer, will turn out to be correct about everything and the survivors will wonder why we were so obsessed with that latest model of SUVs(playing right into the hands of the evil auto industry and their arms race based method of sales they have used to sell new cars to people when they really didn't need them-evil being a deserved description if there ever was one). We could have spent time building windmills, redesigning cities and towns to undo the damage early 20th century planners did to our public infrastructure. Instead we soent valuable resources building suburbs, exurbs, super exurbs, and outposts(out West I watched a sham celeb doc put a house on top of virgin national forest), most of which lost it's value within 5 years. In comparison, places that kept development under control haven't suffered as much, like cities in the Netherlands like Amsterdam or NW cities like Portland.
