Courtney Vandersloot Reaches 2,000 Points, 1,000 Asssists

Courtney Vandersloot

03/21/11 10:59 PM ET   AP

SPOKANE, Wash. — Gonzaga's Courtney Vandersloot has become the first player in Division I history – men or women – with at least 2,000 points and 1,000 assists in her career.

Vandersloot already had the assist total, but reached the 2,000-point mark with her 10th point in Monday night's NCAA second-round game against UCLA. Vandersloot went scoreless for the first 13 minutes, but had eight at halftime and got the mark on a steal and layup with 12:24 left. She was given a long standing ovation and chant of "Courtney" by the sold out McCarthy Athletic Center that included former Gonzaga and Utah Jazz star John Stockton.

She had 1,085 assists heading into Monday's game.

Former Penn State star Suzie McConnell previously had the most points for any player with 1,000 assists after scoring 1,897 in her career. The most of any men's player with 1,000 assists was Bobby Hurley, who scored 1,731 points in his Duke career to go along with 1,076 assists.

Mentored by John Stockton who was in the stands and showed the same emotion when she achieved it he did when his team won a tough game.

I watched as it happened and think it's great.

Why was Gonzaga was an eleven seed? They finished at 19 and 20 in the two polls which would make them a five. They beat (destroyed?) a tough UCLA team. Now they get to meet Louisville who beat Xavier, a number two.

Women's basketball is great for me because they play the game (although much better) I played in the fifties. The men play a game beyond my comprehension and it's great, too.

True athletes and competitors play for the joy of playing. It is all over her face. The audience is secondary. If you don't understand that, then you are neither.

No kidding. Bet he couldn't score 2000 points with a nerf ball and no defense.

under that logic, shouldn't many more women players have accomplished this by now?

Face facts: this young woman is a great player, with a terrific all around game and the court sense of a Larry Bird. Unfortunately, the women's game is just not all that good in terms of athletic wonderment. But they can play interesting fundamental basketball.

And yes, John Stockton was a truly great player who always made the right decision, could deliver the ball as well as anyone ever has, and knew when to look for his own offense. Walt Frazier was one of the few in John's league. They were not flashy, like Tim Duncan in that regard.

What an unfortunate last name she has.....

p.s. - for my money, unless I'm watching gymnastics, beach volleyball, tennis or sometimes swimming women's athletics are pointless.

He is a l0ser looking for attention. Some woman probably did him wrong. He can't help it, he is desperate for attention so he comes here to post nonsense to show how "not" interested he is when the whole time he knows he is no athlete.
