Elizabeth Taylor's Jewelry Valued At $150 Million (VIDEO)

First Posted: 03/24/2011 10:32 am Updated: 05/25/2011 6:40 pm

"Good Morning America" took a look at Elizabeth Taylor's jewelry collection, reportedly valued at $150 million.

The icon once talked to Barbara Walters about her love for all-things-bling, explaining, "The beauty, the perfection, God's workmanship. They're all from the ground." Her affinity for gemstones began as a child and continued as she counted husbands. Walters asked her if it was awkward for her new men to see their predecessor's presents. "So I've been told," Liz remarked. What did she do about it? "Encourage them to give me more." Naturally.

I'm fortunate to own several pieces of costume jewelry designed by Lisa Todd Burton, Elizabeth's daughter. The value is nowhere in the precious league as her mother's collection - but I love every piece for the gifted creative connection it displays between mother and beautifully talented daughter.

Shame that a collection so pecious to her has to be dismantled for money.

Let me just say this: Not since the Duchess of Windsor auction has there been a more famous and anticipated collection of jewels going under the hammer. Collectors all of the world are salivating as we speak.

A year ago I attended a Cartier exhibit in San Francisco where some of their most famous designs and jewelry pieces were shown. I got to see a few of Elizabeth Taylor's famed jewels, including the tiara and the ruby & diamond set given to her by Todd. It was amazing. I'm not a big jewelry fan, but walking out of there I was smitten. You got a personalized firework show while staring at any of the pieces. Simply divine.

When I lived in Rome in the early 1970s, one of my favorite outing was to see the stunning displays of jewelry at Bulgari. Their work was truly art.

A few years ago, again in Bulgari in Rome, the jewels Bulgari sold to Elizabeth Taylor were on display. Wow and double wow!

I'm generally not fond of jewelry but I make an enthusiastic exception for the work from that shop.

what her children will likely do is have a traveling museum exhibit of all her jewelry, and im sure all the proceeds will go to her AIDS foundation, that would be the best idea ever and im sure it would bring in many many millions...then they could either auction it, or better yet, have the smithsonian create its own elizabeth taylor wing and all her jewelry would be on permanent display/loan to the museum and every 10 years they would do another tour...

her collection is one of the greatest jewelry collections in the US and as famous as she was, her jewelry was almost as famous...i would pay 50 dollars to see her jewelry in an exhibit

More than likely the children will sell the jewels to the highest bidder and all go their seperate way. Lets wait and see how her will reads, then we'll all know more. But don't expect the family of Liz Taylor to treat this like another Jaxson side-show or 42 ring circus. Ain't going to happen. She raised over 300 Million US $ for AIDS, why should her family do more than that.

I read in "Furious Love," a book written with her cooperation that some pieces will go to her children. The rest will be auctioned. Between real estate, jewels, and the fine art, this woman was nearly a billionaire. And don't forget she was heir to Mike Todd's Todd-AO, which is still used in movie making.

god she was great...her attitude about everything was amazing..love her

If her pieces are auctioned off, I would wager that they will draw more than Jackie Kennedy Onassis or the Duchess of Windsor.

Or for everyday wear, tanzanite (named by Tiffany's), invariably described as "the color of Liz Taylor's eyes."

I think that's a lowball estimate. I would guess 5x that for insurance, 10x that at auction.
10:02 PM on 03/24/2011
Totally agree. 150 million? That's ridiculous.

I wonder, perhaps, if the $150K figure is what it was insured and valued at before her passing. That would have been among her papers and probably in her will.

Now that she's gone, it's going to be worth a lot more.

I hope she donated all her bling to her charities for auction.

I like her because even with chasing all the baubles, the spotlights and the dramatics, it seems like a real person. A bit earthy even.
