States Said To Be Weighing Google Antitrust Probe

Google Antitrust Probe

First Posted: 03/24/11 10:20 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:40 PM ET

Ohio and Wisconsin may be contemplating launching an antitrust investigation of Google, according to a Bloomberg report citing "a state official and a person familiar with the matters."

It would hardly be Google's first run-in with antitrust regulators. The European Commission is currently probing allegations that Google blocked a smaller search engine, while Italy's antitrust officials recently closed an investigation into the company's practices. Senator Richard Blumenthal has also called for a Google antitrust hearing, noting, "The recent acquisition by Google of e-commerce sites in a broad array of businesses raises some serious antitrust issues." Google's proposed acquisition of ITA has also received months of scrutiny from antitrust regulators.

Bloomberg writes of the possible antitrust inquiry:

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine is "evaluating the facts to determine if it's something we want to review," Dan Tierney, his spokesman, said. In Wisconsin, Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen is weighing a probe of Google's bid to buy ITA Software Inc., according to a person familiar with the matter who declined to be identified because the process isn't public. The U.S. Justice Department is already reviewing the deal.

Bloomberg also notes that Texas is also "questioning Google," notable as the Lone Star State was "the first state to open its own probe of Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) in 1997."

Yeah Google is so "dangerous".

Remember when Microsoft was going to be a monopoly or Blockbuster? Hmm, Apple, Netflix and Google took care of that.

Lesson Learned: In the free market monopolies don't exist because there is always competition. Monopolies are only the product of government force.

Ever try to mail a letter via Fedex? You can't. Fedex makes money, US Postal service loses it.
Get it liberals?

I guess you didn't study American history much . Between 1897 & 1901, over 2000 mergers took place. Keep in mind, that 2000 was a huge number in 1900.
By 1880, John D. Rockefeller had bought up 100 independent oil refineries, and controlled about 90% of the oil business.( No cars yet,but every kerosene lamp lit in the U.S.,Canada, and China, put money into John D.'s pocket. China had 400 million people in the 1890's.)
Had the Supreme court NOT broken up Standard oil in 1911, choices today would be limited. These companies got their beginnings as a direct result of the breakup:
Exxon,Socony(Mobil),Humble,Amoco,Chevron,Imperial of Canada,ARCO,Sunoco,Conoco/Phillips,Marathon Oil,Esso/UK,Vaseline>Unilever,Pennzoil. Were it not for the breakup, these would be Standard Oil. If the rules were not changed, don't you imagine that in the last hundred years, Standard would have managed to buy Gulf,Shell(overseas),Pure, Texaco?? They had a great start.
John D. was buying railroads, steel mills,Natural gas companies. He ran more than one competitor out of business by refusing to allow a pipeline across his railroad land. Today we really don't have a complete free market. Ask Halliburton, Kellogg, Brown, & Root, or Blackwater>Xe, what they think of free market. Were they not granted exclusive contracts(Monopolies), they wouldn't exist today. Republicans never want a level playing field. Think Bush and his brand name only, exclusive drug deal with Medicare. What's free market about that ?
I can mail letters at Fedex. Drop 'em in a $ 10 envelope and away they go !

Republicans launching an antitrust investigation? This may be unprecedented in my lifetime! Did Google come out in favor of Net Neutrality? Do they donate to Democrats?

If the thread of guilt is ever pulled on the banks, Washington DC would unravel.

Finally, after 10 years of going through great difficulty finding anything on the net. You either get nothing but retail links or youtube videos or if you use one of their other specialized engines, so narrow a selection as to be nearly as useless. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/24/google-antitrust-probe_n_839973.html?utm_source=DailyBrief&utm_campaign=032411&utm_medium=email&utm_content=NewsEntry&utm_term=Daily+Brief#

Funny how they are letting AT&T become a monopoly again without so much as a furrowed brow. I suspect all this is somehow tied up with the assault on Net Neutrality. God forbid the conservative tool Bloomberg should actually do some real reporting and connect the dots on it.

Figures it would be states with Bagger governors. To them, everything about the internet is librul

When Texas investigated MIcrosoft, it was a political shake down by the Republicans. It may be that situation here as well with Google.

LITTLE KNOW FACT: In California and I would assume other states... republican counties pay less in taxes than democrat counties but republican counties take more in taxes...

How desperate are states for money that they will sue anyone for money?

I don't think it's so much about money as directing the public ire, away from the lack of economic remedy, Wall St. prosecution, corp/CEO tax avoidance, etc. Fairly effective.

translation - Republican states are broke, so they want to use courts to sue a rich company that they believe is "liberal". Disgusting. Guess they should have taken the high-speed-rail money!

Could the government stop the flow of information like Egypt did? Like China does? Google and Microsoft have too much information and the governments try to stop them. Ask for a photo everyone like the internet sites do and maybe there might be some accountability. Government, corporations and Internet bots seem to think the information should flow one way. My info is out there; is yours? I would only do business with those who have given me all their information. I only work when I need cash and I file income tax forms when I feel like it. My name is Brian Elwin Pomeroy and my sin number is 625 626 692 and my picture is on a few internet sites. My face is not on Facebook and I do not tweet. My opinion is searchable. Are you and your opinion searchable?

Another company that provides great services for free being attacked by socialists.
12:18 PM on 03/24/2011
Correct me if I am wrong, but aren't both these states currently controlled by Republicans? Who are theses "Socialist" you are referring to?

More likely republican capitalists angry that they give services away for free. Free = Socialism.

Damned socialists, get your grubby hands off my social security!
