Myanmar Earthquake 2011: 6.8 Magnitude Temblor Hits Near Thailand

Myanmar Earthquake

AYE AYE WIN   03/25/11 11:23 PM ET   AP

YANGON, Myanmar — A powerful earthquake that toppled homes in northeastern Myanmar has killed more than 70 people, and there were fears the toll would mount as conditions in more remote areas became known.

The Thursday night quake, measured at magnitude 6.8 by the U.S. Geological Survey, was centered just north of Tachileik town in Shan State near the Thai border. It was felt hundreds of miles (kilometers) away in the Thai capital, Bangkok, and the Vietnamese capital, Hanoi.

Myanmar state radio announced Friday that 73 people had been killed and 111 injured. It said 390 houses, 14 Buddhist monasteries and nine government buildings were damaged. Earlier in the day, news broadcasts had put the death toll at 74. No explanation was given for the decrease.

Significant damage was reported in the villages around Tachileik, including to bridges and roads, which developed massive fissures, complicated relief efforts.

A U.N. official said a small hospital and bridge were damaged in the nearby town of Tarlay, making it difficult to access the town. The private relief agency World Vision said water tanks and wells were also damaged, making water scarce.

On the Thai side of the border, one woman was killed in Mae Sai when a wall fell on her, according to Thai police, but damage was otherwise minimal.

The U.N. official said medicine would be sent to the affected areas as soon as possible along with an assessment team in cooperation with the Myanmar Red Cross Society. He said 95,000 people were estimated to live near the quake's epicenter, but it was unknown how many suffered damage from it.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because Myanmar's government frowns on giving unauthorized information to the media.

Other relief efforts also were gearing up. World Vision said that at the request of the government, it would provide 250 households with basic necessities, such as food and water.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton offered the United States' "sincere condolences."

"Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this tragedy," she said in a statement.

Most of rural Myanmar, one of Asia's poorest countries, is underdeveloped, with poor communications and other infrastructure, and minimal rescue and relief capacity. The country's military government is also usually reluctant to release information about disasters because it is already sensitive to any criticism.

In 2008, the government delayed reporting on – and asking for help with – devastating Cyclone Nargis, which killed 130,000 people. The junta was widely criticized for what were called inadequate preparations and a slow response to the disaster.

Somchai Hatayatanti, the governor of Thailand's Chiang Rai province, said dozens of people suffered minor injuries on the Thai side of the border. Cracks were found in buildings in downtown Chiang Rai city, about 55 miles (90 kilometers) from the epicenter, including a provincial hospital and city hall. The tops of spires fell from at least two Buddhist temples.

As a precaution for aftershocks, a relief center was being set up Friday in Mae Sai.

"We are worried that the area might be hit with stronger quakes. There was another quake at 7 a.m. this morning," said Somsri Meethong of the Mae Sai District office, referring to a 4.9 aftershock. "I had to run again like last night. What we have seen on TV about Japan added to our fear."

Dear frightened proletariat: Before jumping conclusions, before invoking spirits, announcing the reckoning, waxing philosophical about the Revelation, do a little research. Please end the laziness. Reading the news is not going to properly inform you, especially on the subject of geophysics. Are earthquakes of this magnitude common? Yes. Why have you suddenly begun noticing them? The press realizes that this is what people are interested in. It just so happens that recently, Haiti, a neighbor of ours that has a large immigrant population in this country, and Chile, New Zealand, and Japan, who all conspicuously first word countries, have experienced large earthquakes. Therefore, we care...and suddenly, it's news...so now we're ready to read about this no matter where it happens. We'll forget by next year...trust me. Anyhow, if you'd all like some information...actual information, here you go

If you prefer to run screaming through the streets yelling about Biblical prophecy, be my guest....but...it'll be far less stressful to actually know what you're talking about.

Ask not for whom the earth quakes.
It quakes for you.

What's that you're drinking? -- Gatorade And do you have cancer? -- No. OMG, Gatorade cures cancer.
Earthquakes happen every day. The end of the world may or may not happen. The two are NOT connected.

This is an earthquake story. So why are the mods protecting the biblical prophecy nuts?

Come on dudes. The Earth's plates have been moving long before they admit the Earth has even been here.

you can only understand christianity through the MysticalTeachings. King James assembled the best minds around at the time to compile and reassemble the many books. Only a fool would interpret the words of the bible as fact. It is something more cryptic, an esoteric thing.....

Ho hum, yet another 6+ earthquake. 3-5 years ago a 6-7 earthquake would’ve been major news, today it’s just another blip on the radar. There has been very little reporting on MSM about this. Our earth is changing weather we like it or admit it or not. Sticking your head in the sand will not make it go away.
11:40 AM on 04/05/2011
Dear supersajin....it is your head that is in the proverbial sand. These events have always been common, but haven't receive press when they happend far from the US in countries we have limited relationships with. You think they woud have been big news 3-5 years ago, but they would not have been. Earthquakes become news when they kill a lot of people, strike first world countries, or when news outlets arbitrarily decide to make them new. Allow me to introduce to you some actual information. Ignorance is the mother of fear. Educate yourself. http://earthquake.usgs.gov/learn/topics/increase_in_earthquakes.php and http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eqarchives/year/eqstats.php

Luke 21:7-12
7 Then they questioned him, saying: “Teacher, when will these things actually be, and what will be the sign when these things are destined to occur?” 8 He said: “Look out that YOU are not misled; for many will come on the basis of my name, saying, ‘I am he,’ and, ‘The due time has approached.’ Do not go after them. 9 Furthermore, when YOU hear of wars and disorders, do not be terrified. For these things must occur first, but the end does not [occur] immediately.” 10 Then he went on to say to them: “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; 11 AND THERE WILL BE GREAT EARTHQUAKES, AND IN ONE PLACE AFTER ANOTHER pestilences and food shortages; and there will be fearful sights and from heaven great signs. 12 “But before all these things people will lay their hands upon YOU and persecute YOU, delivering YOU up to the synagogues and prisons, YOU being haled before kings and governors for the sake of my name.

Say what you want, time will prove everything. If you are right no biggie, but if you are wrong, big problem. I think it also say something about people not believing, like in the days of Noah. I know I will be made fun of but like I said time will tell.

Probably that's because of the refugee camps along the Thai/Burma (I refuse to cal in Myanmar) border that house the displaced hill tribe people, mosty Karen. They live in huge "camps" on the Thai side of the border. Thais don't allow them further into the country, and indeed there are checkpoints to keep them close to Mae Sot. Because they are penniless and have no oil, a lot of the NGOs helping are faith based Christian organizations. As has been the goal of missionaries since time began, they have converted many recipients of their food, water, clothes, and shelter. Sometimes a little coercion is involved, but on the whole they are providing needed care where others can't be bothered.

I was hoping this wasn't going to be the case. Yesterday on this thread, a family hadn't heard about their daughter teaching there. Hope she is ok.

In Northern Thailand from California, the quake was minimal from my perspective. I think much of that damage is due to terrible construction and/or very very old buildings. There is no building code in Burma. Mae Sai is just as bad. Interesting to see but a dumpy little boarder town.

Big news where I am is an old tale about a shopping mall in Thailand being built under code resulting in fear an earth quake would take it down (parking in the basement). People were mauling to get out. If you know the Thai culture, it was an insane sight. Other interesting note, was in the paper here a week ago that a local fortune teller predicted a quake within a couple of weeks.. Hmm.
08:19 AM on 03/25/2011
That is the most condescending and heartless things I have ever read. "the quake was MINIMAL from my perspective". What perspective? Thousands of miles away? 6.8 is not minimal by anyone's standard,.. except, of course yours.

The fortune teller predicted it a week ago, huh? How about, for your own personal enlightenment, read Luke chapter 21, starting at verse 10. This was told to some people 1978 YEARS AGO.

You are the kind of farang that gives us all a bad name. Probably was annoying that they don't speak much Engish, and if they do, pronounced "r" like "l", too, right? Your grasp of Thailand and it's culture is genuinely insulating and embarrassing.

Please don't go back to the kingdom. I rarely see Americans, and really glad I didn't see you.

Ok, it's the Union of Myanmar. "Burma" is the Anglicized colloquial form Bamar from Myanmar. Both Burma and Myanmar are imposed (the first by colonial masters; the second by military junta) names.
