NEW YORK - Best Buy Co Inc beat quarterly profit estimates as strength in its mobile business offset weak demand for televisions and entertainment software in the all-important holiday season.

But analysts were cautious about the longer term outlook for the company.

The top U.S. consumer electronics chain, which recently announced plans to open about 150 Best Buy Mobile small-format stores in the United States, saw a low double-digit comparable store sales increase in mobile phones even as overall comparable-store sales fell in the fourth quarter.

The retailer is focusing on selling more mobile phone, broadband and TV connections rather than expensive televisions as post-recession U.S. shoppers keep a tight rein on spending amid rising gas prices and high unemployment levels.
Despite the big focus on its profitable mobile business, many raised concerns about Best Buy's long term prospects citing continuing pressure on its ailing TV business.

"It is very difficult for Best Buy to post positive comps when a category that is 20 percent of their sales is comping down double digits," BB&T Capital Markets analyst Anthony Chukumba said.

Net income fell to $651 million, or $1.62 a share in the fourth quarter ended February 26, from $779 million, or $1.82 a share, a year earlier. Excluding items, it earned $1.98 a share, well ahead the analysts' average estimate of $1.85 a share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. (For a related graphic, click: r.reuters.com/kax68r)

Best Buy shares were down 7 cents at $31.78, reversing course after being up 3 percent earlier on Thursday morning on the New York Stock Exchange.

"The stock appears to be getting a 'better than feared' reaction," JPMorgan analyst Christopher Horvers said.

"Given the lack of sales visibility and little reason to be optimistic before easy back-half comparisons, the arrival of more competitive tablets, and a labor market rebound, there isn't much else to hold on to for the next two quarters that can put a significant dent in the secular bear case."

Best Buy has consistently lost bargain-hungry shoppers to online retailer Amazon.com Inc and mass merchants Target Corp and Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

"Best Buy should see some near-term relief from the concerns circling the name," Stifel Nicolaus analyst David Schick said. "The problems re-emerge, though, as the longer-term view is taken."

For fiscal 2012, the company sees earnings of $3.30 to $3.55 a share, excluding previously announced restructuring charges and potential share repurchases. The outlook compared with Horvers' estimate of $3.44 and consensus of $3.57.

On Thursday, GameStop Corp, the world's largest retailer of video game products, also posted a higher-than-expected quarterly profit.

Best Buy's decision to focus on promoting pricier televisions backfired in the early part of the holiday season. The retailer advertised cheaper TVs later in the season, but its December same-store sales still fell 4 percent.

Same-store sales fell 4.6 percent in its fourth quarter, including a 5.5 percent decline at its U.S. stores open at least 14 months.

Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter was looking for a 2.2 percent same-store sales decline in the quarter, including a 3 percent decline at its U.S. stores open at least 14 months.

Best Buy is one of my favorite Company's to shop at. Great selection, Great prices and generally good to great help. I was in one yesterday and I happened to find myself standing in front of a wall of huge television screens. Most of the screens were larger than my home. I have to say that I was really tempted to start gabbing with a salesman about them but I felt my sales resistance was really at low tide. I knew if I started asking questions about them I was a goner who in a few days would have one and the bill to prove it. So I just pulled myself together and picked up what I came in for and left. Tough financial times.

Do you think it just might be the recession?

You know, ordinary workers aren't doing well and are scared to spend money on unnecessary stuff?

Maybe you can NOT destroy a good portion of the working and middle classes and STILL expect them to be happy, spending consumers for unneeded goods?

Simple math.....you gotta have the money to buy the goods. No money, no spending.
With unemployment around 10%......and people fighting over low paying jobs.....

Yet companies can't understand why the profits are not what they expected.

And the government can't (seem to) understand why the tax money from the working classes is not enough to run the country, finance wars, etc.

Jeez, we sure have some stupid people in charge of America's finances and economy.

why buy that bigger screen TV if you may not have a job next month, your taxes and utilities are rising, your TV , IE: cable /Dish/Uverse bills rise, and your Internet access to free tv is throttled by companies like ATT and ComCast to force you to buy their tv service. Its not worth upgrading, when you cant afford to watch it , now is it?

Maybe it's simply that consumers have realized that Best Buy are one of the worst retailers.....

The strategy that worked for Best Buy is no longer valid.

Deep discounts on music and video CD/DVD no longer draw customers.

Their sales began to lag when CD sales went into the dumper, and stayed there.

The problem with buying a TV at Best Buy is hauling it home.
Unless you have access to a pick-up truck it won't fit in your car.
Buying online saves hundreds of dollars and they deliver it right to your door.

I bought my 52" TV at Best Buy and they delivered it the next day.

TV sales sagging? Could it be there's little worth watching?

TV sales sagging? There's hope for America! That's the Best Buy news I've read in a very, very long time...

The last time I watched television in this country, I was face-down intoxicated -- and cable TV content was still appalling.

Then you obviously missed:
Downton Abby
Mad Men
Breaking Bad
Justified
Walking Dead
NFL
NBA
MLB
Pawn Stars
The Good Wife
Stewart/Colbert
This Old House
Antiques Roadshow
American Idol (Before you attack have you seen it This year?)
Anthony Bourdain
I've just scratched the surface.
If you put a little effort into it there's plenty of solid TV to watch.
More than you probably should anyway.

There's less and less reason to get a TV. The content amazingly gets more dreadful every year and they want way too much money for it. And there are plenty of cheaper alternatives available to watch movies.

The problem with Best Buy is that they used to have great prices on their merchandise but in recent years, they've consistently raised their prices to just under full retail. This is why I no longer shop at Best Buy.

I simply do my business with Amazon and Walmart because I get better deals with those retailers.

I shop at Staples for my computing/small electronics needs. The Staples in my neighborhood has a huge selection compared to the store next to my work. Best Buy lost my business years ago; their customer service is horrible.

Staples is very high priced.
Amazon has everything Stapes offers usually for a lot less.

Bye bye Best Buy. I only shop online for electronics. Cheaper, no taxes, no shipping charges and great service. Yep, mortar and bricks will only survive if the give service, good service. I would not mind paying a few bucks extra if I got good service from a knowledgeable sales person which Best Buy lacks.

I agree. Bricks and mortar do offer the opportunity for face to face personal service. I recently had OUTSTANDING service from the mobile phone guys at Best Buy. Very knowledgeable, friendly and efficient. A bright spot in what is usually an average customer service experience at best.

I agree if you know what you want and don't require service, purchasing online is the way to go. And if you're unsure about online purchasing, buy from Costco, double the factory warranty and return the product within 90 days for a full refund if you're unsatisfied. Best of both worlds.
