Reactor Core At Japan's Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Plant May Have Been Breached

03/25/11 02:13 AM ET   AP

TOKYO -- Japanese nuclear safety officials said Friday that they suspect that the reactor core at one unit of the troubled Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant may have breached, raising the possibility of more severe contamination to the environment.

"It is possible that somewhere at the reactor may have been damaged," said Hidehiko Nishiyama, a spokesman for the nuclear safety agency. But he added that "our data suggest the reactor retains certain containment functions," implying that the damage may have occurred in Unit 3's reactor core but that it was limited.

Officials say the damage could instead have happened in other equipment, including piping or the spent fuel pool.

Operators have been struggling to keep cool water around radioactive fuel rods in the reactor's core after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami cut off power supply to the plant and its cooling system.

Damage could have been done to the core when a March 14 hydrogen explosion blew apart Unit 3's outer containment building.

This reactor, perhaps the most troubled at the six-unit site, holds 170 tons of radioactive fuel in its core. Previous radioactive emissions have come from intentional efforts to vent small amounts of steam through valves to prevent the core from bursting. However, releases from a breach could allow uncontrolled quantities of radioactive contaminants to escape into the surrounding ground or air.

Operators stopped work Friday at units 1 through 3 to check on radiation levels.

It has occurred to me more than once that noone in Japan, govt. or power company, is going to release any real damage reports until they're caught. They simply are scrambling to contain it because of the money and because, perish the thought, otherwise they may have to end using those plants forever. The news just gets worse every day. Prayers for the workers at those plants and shame on the powers that be for making the workers go into the plant without the lead barriers on their feet.

When are they gonna load up the electrical company executives and drop them at the site where they belong, to clean up this mess. When is somebody gonna get it...it's all about the MONEY with them!
My heart breaks for the poor doomed workers at the plants and the unconscionable risk the whole of Japan, and who knows how much of the rest of the planet, is being subjected to.
...time to dump concrete on the whole mess ala Chernobyl if you ask me...the companies will just continue to lie!

Don't forget to give them buckets and mops! But we cannot just dump concrete on this mess. Not yet. Not until they become stable cold. They will get hot enough to burn through the bloody concrete! I'm sure that's what their going to do eventually IF they ever get the chance! Huggs Becky

We need to shut down all US nuclear reactors before the news in Japan becomes a US story. There is no price to high for safety...

At current press conference, TEPCO says inside of reactor No.2 was 1,000mSv/h at 29 hours ago. It was 2,900,000,000bq/sq cm.

The Art of War by Sun Tzu states that you should appear strong when you are weak. Rattle your swords, bang your drums. Appear to be in control.
Governments (aka:the media) have read that book.
Nature is in control. Now, because of man's interference, it looks like 5 to 10% of their land might be unsuitable for living for a few years. That's a major hit to a society that is already overcrowded.

We need the IAEA to become the authority on nuclear regulations and to enforce reporting of all that is happening with the worl's nuclear energy plants. For the rest of the world to sit back while Japan bungles along, probably releasing enormous amounts of radiation into the water and atmosphere is absolutely appalling. We need some answers, and actual photos of what is happening, NOW.

Several days ago I mentioned that I had information about the TVA Browns Ferry nuclear plant. Here is a web site that gives the information that has been released to the press about how the TVA facilities differ from other sites. The article, while being presented from the TVA authorities gives information that implies more backup capabilities than some other nuclear facilities.

I guess I am one of the lucky people in the world. I would not do one thing differently than I do now: enjoying sitting on my back deck in my tiny log cabin in the woods, enjoying the birds, deer, wild turkey, raccoons, squirrels, chipmunks, the occasional glimpse of a bear and the occasional scream of a wild cat, being puzzled wondering how the ugliest creature I've ever seen, the possum can even bare to mate with each other, snuggling with my best friend Sara, my min pin, feeding the psycho stray cat that shows up on my front porch every night looking for the handful of cat food I give her though never letting me touch her,, chatting with my sister, sister by birth, best friend by choice, having an occasional lively lunch at the little restaurant in the local village with my other literary and artistic friends, rereading all my favorite books, Thoreau, essays of Mark Twain, Homer, Wordsworth, Blake and a novel I keep reading, Confederation of Dunces. I still write thinking one of these days it will be a book, but no big deal if it doesn't, enjoying the wildflowers, and waiting for the hummingbirds to come back for the summer. I am of all people most fortunate since my little world is my version of heaven.

I couldn't find this article ... I had to trace it through my response email notifications from yesterday. Why has this topic been completely dropped from every major news outlet ? Something is going on here.
