Tom Ford: 'A Man Should Never Wear Shorts In The City'

Tom Ford

Designer Tom Ford covers the spring/summer issue of AnOther Man magazine, and -- instead of plugging his much-talked-about womenswear line (although we're sure that's in there -- he used the opportunity to impart several lessons on how to be a modern gentleman.

Take a look at a handful of Ford pointers. Do you agree about wearing shorts in the city?

Quick Poll

Ford's shorts theory:

AGREE! Men should NOT wear shorts in the city.

DISAGREE! Who cares?

Agree to disagree. Love me some Tom Ford.

For the rest, head over to AnOther.

  • A gentleman today has to work. People who do not work are so boring and are usually bored. You have to be passionate, you have to be engaged and you have to be contributing to the world.
  • Manners are very important and actually knowing when things are appropriate. I always open doors for women, I carry their coat, I make sure that they're walking on the inside of the street. Stand up when people arrive at and leave the dinner table.
  • A man should never wear shorts in the city. Flip-flops and shorts in the city are never appropriate. Shorts should only be worn on the tennis court or on the beach.

The views, obviously, of someone with scrawny legs and ugly feet, and let's hope he keeps both under wraps. Talk about an uptight, anal personality.

I take it all the pro-shorts comments are from non-Manhattanites. Please wear them it identifies you either a tourist, or an amateur New Yorker!

It's Tom's world and we're just living in it...sans shorts. Read more about his gentlemanly rules and weigh in @imeanwhat http://bit.ly/e1j5Bg

Great designer, but the shorts statement is just stupid. He obviously doesn't have to walk around outside on the weekend in NYC when it's 800 degrees. Better yet, he probably doesn't know the experience of walking into the subway and having that, "OMG, it's so hot I feel like my eyes are boiling" feeling.

Cheers,

Ryan

Sorry, DUDE

Live in the city and surf the subways and wouldn't be caught dead in shorts in Manhattan.
And flip flops? You might wear them and I might not SAY anything to you - but just know - lots of us are THINKING. . .

Tom Ford is so awesome. He's studly. And he's right about the shorts and flip-flops in the city.

I also love a man who opens the door for me (that's the southern in me, I cannot deny it) and who walks on the curb side when we are strolling.

Good manners and proper dress are always sexy!

OMG! Tom what happen? Did the other Tom brainwash you during your big gay beach fling? Is that why you hate beachwear now? Call me and lets talk about.

P.S. - Don't believe a word Xenu tells you. Shorts and flops are not that bad, especially when you're a [passionate] dancer jumping between auditions all day long. Some times yah gotta let the toes breathe.

If you're a dancer you're the kind of person I don't want with open toe shoes around me. Would you want someone wearing construction boots all day with open toe shoes near you? I wouldn't want a dancer around me with them on either.

LOL.....no, but that's why it's a free country. God Bless America! :-)

I totally agree...but I think both men and women should not wear shorts in the city.....it's strictly beach wear.

I love Mr. Ford and I agree with everything said, but what happened? Did Mr. Ford have a run-in with a common savage of today? I would add that people stand too close....it's rude to invade someone's space.

Haha! He said Tennis! Men play basketball Tom.
