Apple Teases WWDC 2011 Announcements: 'Future Of iOS,' But No iPhone 5?

Apple Wwdc 2011

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 03/28/11 12:54 PM ET Updated: 05/28/11 06:12 AM ET

At last year's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple debuted the iPhone 4, introduced an eager audience to the handset's Retina Display and demoed the FaceTime app for the first time.

So what will we see this year?

Apple has announced that WWDC 2011 will take place between June 6 and June 10, at the Moscone West in San Francisco. The Cupertino-based company also hinted at the latest developments in the iOS mobile platform and the Mac OS for desktops.

"[W]e are going to unveil the future of iOS and Mac OS,” Senior Vice President of Worldwide Product Marketing Philip Schiller said in a statement. “If you are an iOS or Mac OS X software developer, this is the event that you do not want to miss.”

Attendees will preview what's new and go hands-on in workshop sessions with Apple engineers.

But what won't they see? Some sources suggest that Apple will not be unveiling the iPhone 5, or any other hardware for that matter.

All Things D writes, "But if you’re a consumer hoping to get a peek at the next iteration of the iPhone, well…you may not want to get your hopes up too much–even if Apple has used WWDC to unveil updates to the device in years past. I’m hearing explicitly that this year it’s a software event." The Loop adds, "Apple closed the door this morning on any speculation that it would announce new hardware at its Worldwide Developers conference saying it would focus on iOS and Mac OS. Apple’s apparent focus on software in its WWDC announcement backs up what my own sources are saying about the annual conference. That is, expect a software show in 2011, not a hardware event."

Will Apple unveil the iPhone 5 at WWDC 2011?

They will announce the iPhone 5 at WWDC, and here's why http://bit.ly/gEOzGS

Very good points. I'm betting for an iPhone release too, maybe not 5 but at least a "4G" comparable to the "3GS".

Quick truth to the Fandroids here.

Android is the dominant OS as far as market share goes but that doesn't mean that the consumer has made a conscious choice that Android is the superior OS.

First off all there are only two choices for OS for the average smartphone user in today's market. iOS which is available on two carriers and with ONE current phone (with several older models none of which are free) while Android is available on ALL carriers and offers DOZENS and DOZENS of different phones many of them 100% free to customers.

Saying Apple is losing because they don't have top market share is like saying car X sucks because they are being beat by every other car sold combined.

All phones being free and available on all carriers do you really think the top "sold" phone would be an Android?
12:55 AM on 03/30/2011
Apple is not loosing... they are playing their game nicely, offering attractive, well packaged products at premium mark ups. That's not a dis, that just what works for them, majority of income comes from selling products, and it is working well.

I am beginning to get tired of reading the "Android gives away phones, that's why the market share is the way it is"... excuse. While many Android phones are available for free or greatly reduced prices, I have yet to see any of these being used in public en masse... What I do see, is the Droid, Droid 2, Droid X, EVO, MyTouch, Captivate and other comparably priced phones, mostly from carriers other than AT&T. Indicating that many people bought a smartphone that was available on their current carrier, not necessarily the cheapest they could get. They had money to spend but didn't want to switch carriers, so, Apple's fault for restricting the market.

Also, to note, that most people, not all people, *most* people, I know that have Android phones, even on Verizon, do not intend on switching to an iPhone, they are looking for the next wave of Android phones.

Apple is not nor will it "loose" in any foreseeable future, but people are and continue to spend just as much on Android phones as they do on iPhones. The "free phone" line is getting pretty played out...

Free Android phones do play a good part of it though.

For the tech savvy, non business user the only real choices are iOS and Android. One is basically restricted to one phone from one company and the other is on almost everything.

Like I said saying iOS is losing because Android sells more phones is like saying the best selling car in the world is losing because all other car sales combined amount to more.

Market saturation vs. ONE device...

I still maintain that Android market share doesn't reflect all users making a choice that they decide that Android is better. It is price, availability and pure saturation of market.

Wow, an intelligent response on an thread for Apple products. Who would have guessed it.

Did you know that many of Apple product users on this thread think that the reason I'm not a fan of Steve Jobs is because I can't afford his products? I'm being dead serious. That's what they think.

It's amazing.

I thought RIM still dwarfed the others with their Blackberrys, but that's mostly because they've cornered the business market.

RIM is in second I believe but I'm not sure.

It must be the business market because they aren't the best phones by a long shot for people who want an entertainment / productivity smartphone. Android and iOS are the two top for that.

Apple just makes a better product, all around, I've got 2 Pcs and two Macs. I like them both for different reasons, I don't get being a slave to a brand. I do design and work on my macs, I do all my entertainment stuff on my pc's.

Although I've had those macs for 5 yrs and I've had four Pcs in that same 5 years. Pc's are definitely cheaper, and hey should be, you've gotta buy them more often. If Mac just would bring their pricing down, I'd never feel the need to get a pc.

Why would one need to buy a PC more often than a mac?
01:39 PM on 03/30/2011
Translation: Windows PCs require more care to keep them running at optimal speeds, the software released for Windows is also subject to "feature bloat" which eventually takes a toll on the performance. Apple users are many times not accustomed to that, and often have more disposable income, so instead of investing time in learning what makes the computer function better they just go out and buy a new one, until the new one is slowed by the above mentioned problems as well, then.... rinse and repeat.

I use a 5-6 year old Lenovo X61 tablet as my primary machine (connected to a second monitor of course). When I boot Windows, it's slow, but when I boot in Linux Mint, it's as snappy as a new machine. Needless to say I stay in Linux Mint 98% of the time. I only boot in Windows to update the iPhones in the house.

And to think they could have saved all that money by simply installing a FREE OS....

In these comments: Irony

Android fanboys making fun of what they perceive as Apple fanboys like they are somehow better than they are.

Stop hating on a product you don't want to own. Your opinion is fine but when the consensus of the public and tech media is that Apple portable products are pretty awesome it doesn't make much sense to deride them like you are.

Just like what you like and leave other people alone eh?

That is true of a lot of things but in this case it has nothing to do with Apple.

The iPhone and the iPad are both at the same or a better price point than their competition.

Their laptops and desktops are out of my price range but for their portable stuff they are right in line with or better than everyone else.

ITUNES ON THE CLOUD PLEASE!

Apple has almost made the personal computer obsolete. I can do almost everything I need to do with my iPhone. However, it's all backed up, updated and managed with iTunes which needs a computer. My computer at home is currently about as old as any I've had in the last 20 years. It barely runs the current version of iTunes, and I've lost several hundred dollars of Pixar movies (that Apple knows I've already paid for.) Putting iTunes on the cloud would entice me to spend more money since I wouldn't have to worry about losing media anymore.
03:01 PM on 03/29/2011
This is a good guess as to what's coming... "cloud" has been the buzz, and there's a race on to who will get there with a viable, usable, attractive solution. With millions of iPhones and iPads out there, getting media and files on the cloud would be fantastic. And obviously a great way to lock in customers.

I am excited about that too.

What Apple hating people don't get is it isn't just about HAVING the function it is about performing it well.

I am sure when Apple debuts the feature it will be fully integrated into the OS and feel like second nature to use and work seamlessly. That is what is important to me.

I don't care if I have to wait a little while longer to get it but when I do get it I want it to just work right.

Like the rumored NFC inclusion... Sure other phones and devices can do it but I know when Apple does they will have the function, software and infrastructure to make it work. Of course a lot of burden is on business to fully adopt it but I know when Apple does it it will be seamless on the user's end.

Why creepy? Everyone dies. He will, I will and so will you. Like it or not - in the city in which you live you are surrounded by death. The majority of it occurring naturally. Apple has to plan for this inevitability. Not to do so would not be responsible.

Apple's business model relies on insulting the intelligence of its users with their pricing and things like their digital media rights policies. The sad thing is that they can get away with it all so easily.

Their laptops and desktops are more expensive than their counterparts but their mobile devices are among the best in the business and are all competitively priced.

They aren't paid to report this they report stories people are going to read.

Apple's desktops are not significantly more expensive than anyone elses systems, considering the components they use their prices are very competitive.
