Bloomberg 'Outraged' By Cuomo's Budget Cuts

Mayor Bloomberg is not happy with the state budget Governor Andrew Cuomo and the state legislature agreed upon.

From the AP:

"Proportionally, the cuts that are inflicted on New York City are an outrage," Bloomberg said a day after Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced a tentative $132.5 billion state budget deal that is expected to restore more than $136 million of threatened education money to the metropolis.

The mayor said the state concessions were not enough to head off a new round of cutbacks to city agencies, and he did not rule out the possibility of additional teacher job reductions beyond the 6,166 already planned.

"The final budget still cuts New York City education aid more than ever before," he said.

Other budget concerns for the Mayor include drastic cuts in funding to city senior centers and homelessness programs.

"You cannot go into a year on the verge of bankruptcy," Bloomberg said, according to the AP.

Back in February, when Cuomo proposed the state budget cuts, Bloomberg acknowledged that cuts were necessary in the state and that New York City would bear its part of the burden. However, he did argue that the cuts did "not treat New York City equitably" and that "the residents of our five counties pay a disproportionate amount of State taxes, and they deserve the same level of support."

Cuomo's budget plan reduces state spending by two percent and addresses a 10 billion dollar state deficit without raising taxes or borrowing money. The handshake agreement, made with state legislatures today, could go into law by the end of the week, meeting the budget deadline for the first time since 1983.

The news comes today as the city is also outraged at the New York City 2010 census results, which are lower than city estimates and could result in cuts of federal aid as well.

like father like son.. both cater to the rich while portraying themselves to be caring about the poor and disabled.
those misleading commercials he has on tv about restructuring medicaid are a laugh. i urge people to call their legislators but to tell them to stop this budget . mr coumo is a very dangerous man for a section of of ny state population...

You are so right. I did not vote for Cuomo because he is a dishonest DINO who does nothing but cater to the rich.

Since New York City provides 80% of the state income I don't blame him for being outraged most of the rest of New Yorkers are outraged as well.

Yes, this budget is an unmitigated disaster. Cuts in health care and education to make up for the shortfall caused by tax cuts for the wealthy.

You'd be a little more considerate if you knew how much tuitions are in the private schools in New York City.

I know exactly how much tuition costs in private schools in NYC. Having lived here my entire life. I'm supposed to feel sympathy for the rich while unncessary cuts are made that burden the middle class while the rich live life high on the hog. My suggestion: buy a conscience with some of that money.

Americas 8th richest citizen is upset, not for the people but for his tainted image.

Exactly. It's about time people saw him for what he really is. He'll leave NYC in shambles - but secretly he must be pleased that he can now blame the city's demise on Cuomo (rather than himself and his Wall Street cronies).

If this is supposed to be a news site, then I am obliged to point out, in agreement with other posts preceding me, that Bloomturb disagreeing with something is not news.

So Mr Bloomberg why not share in the pain and volunteer to raise your personal taxes and your rich brethren!

Thank you! I support Bloomberg, generally. He is better than Guiliani, which isn't saying much. But, he refuses to raise taxes on the rich for fear they'll move to Westchester or Jersey. It would be great if Bloomberg called a national mayor's conference to deal with taxing wealthier urban residents. Mr. Wall Street has alot of credibility with his cohorts and a media empire that could make a real difference. He would have done much the same if not worse as governor, so I'm not impressed with his criticism of Cuomo, even though it is well-deserved.

As an upstate resident (of Sullivan County -- the "New Hamptons" -- ha!) and observer of Gotham, I have to nod in agreement with your comment, particularly that first sentence.
As for Cuomo the younger, I also agree that criticism of his budget choices is well-deserved, but hardly impressive or fully credible coming from Bloomberg.
They (the rich) are headed for Rockland and Orange counties as well. And yet in Sullivan, we're witnessing parallel phonomena of creeping gentrification and the pervasive problem of Social Service agencies in the City warehousing some of the more intractable cases en masse here. Plus, there's a rather high proportion of tax-exempt property.

If bloomberg had allowed city workers to retire last year like the governor did with state workers there would be no need for layoffs. bloomberg only wants layoffs, not retirements.

Link? I think NYC residents pay the highest taxes and bankroll the state. I am not certain, though. I would be willing to concede the point if you could reveal your source for that assertion. NYC residents pay their own city taxes. Many cities upstate do not.

Yes, and that's pretty evident in looking at his budget. On top of giving corporations and the wealthy breaks, he basically also gives them foot massages and poor children to use as foot stools. Sigh.
