'Gangster Squad': Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling Offered Roles In New Film

Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling Set To Face Off?

Warner Bros is extending offers to Sean Penn and Ryan Gosling to co-star in their planned new crime and punishment drama called "Gangster Squad," Deadline reports.

The film focuses on Mickey Cohen, a notorious Los Angeles gangster who grew to become one of the most violent, feared and famous mobsters in the nation. Jailed multiple times, including once at Alcatraz, Cohen laundered money, killed people and trafficked drugs -- and had the guts to make television appearances while doing it.

Penn is formally being offered the role of Cohen, while Gosling is getting the offer to play a police officer that went after Cohen in the 1940s.

Gosling is coming off of rave reviews and a Golden Globe nomination for his role in the indie relationship drama "Blue Valentine," and is filming "The Ides of March," with George Clooney right now. He'll be seen in the upcoming dramedy "Crazy, Stupid, Love" with Steve Carell. Penn will be seen next in the epic film "Tree of Life," alongside Brad Pitt.
