David Ferrer Angry At Crying Baby During Sony Ericsson Open Match (VIDEO)

David Ferrer Crying Baby

AP/The Huffington Post   First Posted: 03/31/11 10:33 AM ET Updated: 05/31/11 06:12 AM ET

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. -- A baby was bawling, and Sony Ericsson Open quarterfinalist David Ferrer wasn't too happy, either.

Trailing in his match and annoyed by the crying, Ferrer directed a forehand lob toward the infant after losing his serve midway through the second set Wednesday.

The ball didn't come close to the youngster when it landed in the stands, but the crying stopped.

"It was in one moment of the match, but nothing special," Ferrer said. "It was not the problem."

Instead, the Spaniard blamed a case of indigestion. He lost to American Mardy Fish, 7-5, 6-2.

Fish said he didn't see Ferrer hit the ball into the stands.

"He'd probably take that one back if he could," Fish said. "He's a very nice guy. Obviously flustered."

In my country the police would charge you for leaving a child in your car. Tennis at this level and, fot money, is no sport. It is just a well payed act like plumbing or bricklaying. Sport is what children do and, they usually give me more pleasure than these artists on the tenniscourt.

Just a plain and simple PR move; Tennis has been off the radar as a "sport" goes. Why not do something THIS foolish to get people [us] talking about it? In the past it was that the fans made too much noise, then it switched to the players yelling at the officals, then what the players wore, now it's back to "fan" noise. It's all just PR.
I agree with some on here, the baby had no place being there, and yes Poyda; it should have been left in the car.

Why didn't the talking head on Good Morning America voice the same outrage at Chris Brown as she did at David Ferrer's air head move. Talking head didn't say a peep when Brown ignored her questions about the woman he assaulted and later the thug breaks a window endangering people on the street below. Not a word of criticism was heard of Brown and, in fact, they said they'd love to have him back. Beat a woman up and endanger pedestrians, no problem; foolishly loft a tennis ball in the direction of a crying child held by his father, a tirade, what's wrong with him. Things are really assbackwards, aren't they?

Get over it: tennis matches are usually pretty quiet. Ferrer would take it back if he could, but what a mountain out of a molehill. For crissakes, the ball went no where near the kid. Why didn't the father take the kid for a stroll. Haven't we all done that?

Why does tennis require total silence? A commentor said because it requires a level of concentration? What professional sport doesn't require concentration? If you notice it's tennis and golf, where most who attend are rich snooty types ( I kid), that require total silence.

Then why do tennis players always complain when there are people talking in the stadium? Not some of them, all of them would. Up to the point that the umpire will tell the spectators to shut up.
I'm not a tennis player but if ALL of them say that it disrupts their play, then I would say that I trust what they say.
Tennis is not the same as soccer or basketball.
I dare to go to a tennis match and act like you're in the superbowl final while point is being played and I am certain that you would be promptly escorted out of the stadium.

I think most posts here agree on the following:

1. Parents should not have brought child to scorching hot tennis match;
2. Parents, at least, should have promptly left stadium when baby started crying;
3. Tennis player acted like a bigger baby than the baby. "Use your words davey, you are a big boy now, use your words".
4. Babies, and those who raise them, are generally too massive a burden on the rest of us, and they should never be allowed to disrupt anything at anytime that we have gone into the public sphere to enjoy.

Why are we even arguing about this?
Tennis is a game that requires total silence when the game is being played (except in between points) because it requires that level of concentration.
If I was the father, I would have apologized and took the kid out of the stands because it would be disruptive to the players and other people who are trying to watch the game. What would the kid gain from the tennis match anyway? Have you ever seen a kid that age enjoying a tennis match? I haven't.
It's not like it's on the plane where the parent had nowhere to go.

While I agree one should not bring a baby to such an event, to call a very young infant a brat is ridiculous.

You are so right; if a baby cries it is a brat.

All of the children I've raised never cried. They just communicated through a soulful look, a tilt of the head, and if they were particularly distressed - sign language.

The tennis court is Ferrer's workplace. Why should he have to put up with such distraction?

I feel sorry for the toddler--to be subjected to such heat for hours is just not on . That father looks like a master of the universe type, and he should be ashamed for not leaving after his child started crying.

Why do they allow those jumbo jets to continue flying over the stadium? Poor Ferrer needs absolute silence.

Not sure what the circumstances were for the parent; but if he did not immediately try to leave at the end of the following point, it is very inconsiderate. He should be imprisoned.

The jumbo jets overhead is a very weak analogy.

Infants should not be brought to sports events, especially in the blazing sun. They are too young to enjoy tennis matches or have any idea what is going on, and their subsequent crying (not their fault) is distracting to the players and audience.

Baby crying never really annoys me but not when I'm playing tennis, in the middle of a hot blazing sun and at the edge of losing the match. When the temperature is high, temper's even higher noone can keep himself composed.
